As the crow flys about 1 1/2 miles to where the Amtrak Train stops coming out of Los Angeles.There is no ticket agency here and hasn"t been now
for the last 6 years.I.ve been trying to get Amtrak and the City of Glendale
to put the ticket agency back here.Along with a congressman and a Senator.
Havn't heard anything for a week now.Typical Politics.No 14 stops at 10:30
going north and 8:30 pm coming south.Along with Metro-link.

Howdy!
I live about 25 miles southeast of Union Station in Kansas City. By the way, this is a very nice spot to park under the bridge and watch trains go by. There are only a couple of Amtrak trains each day but frequent freight moving into and out of KC.

About 21 miles... easy miles... from Central Station in Memphis.

Now, thereon hangs a tale. I have a house near Blue Mountain Beach in Florida, which is about 31 miles south of Crestview... an Amtrak stop. However, I haven't taken the train, even though the numbers appear to work. Why?...

Schedule, that's why. I have to take CONO south... it goes out around 6:30 in the morning, and then I have to connect eastbound. Look at a schedule and see when I'd get into Crestview, and how much fun I would have had up to that time. Then tot up the total time I would have spent en route. Then look at the schedule on the reverse trip.

It's about six and a half easy hours by car, with two kids, wife, and wife's 400lb of 'Southern-woman' necessities. I can't .. and I think I prefer it that way... imagine what the logistics of this would be on the rails.

Likewise, traveling to New York from here is not exactly a triumph of directness.

I live within one mile of two Amtrak Stations that are both in service and one mile from the former Western Pacific station in Stockton now sans track. The two amtrak stations are the former Santa Fe and Southern Pacific stations in Stockton. The former SP station sees three ACE (Altamont Commuter Express) trains daily in each direction and two Amtrak San Joaquins daily in each direction between Sacramento and Bakersfield. The former Santa Fe station sees five daily San Joaquins daily in each direction. Not bad for a city of less than 300,000 people. Eat your hearts out.

Your trip to Fla. wouldn't be any easier by air, in all fairness.
Families can often travel in comparative comfort by rail compared to the tiny seats on an airplane.

But thanks to federally-funded highway systems, anyone can get anywhere by the almight automobile.
To suggest, however, similar investments in rail transporation, to some policymakers, is pure heresy.

I'm 30 miles from Benson, Arizona on the Union Pacific Sunset Route, which has a flag stop Amshed.  If no one is scheduled to get on or off, the train goes through town at full throttle, and nearly always several hours late.

Back in the 70's we were serviced here {in Muncie}, via C&O and with the running of the Cardinal.....East from Wash. D C to Chicago & return.

Now....That route is the Cardinal Greenway Trail.

And our closest Amtrak station is downtown Indianapolis....Served by Amtrak's, Cardinal / Hoosier State.  Roughly 65 miles southwest from us.

I'm about 18 or so miles from downtown San Antonio where I can catch either the Sunset Limited or the Texas Eagle.

The nearest Amtrak station to me would be Naperville, probably about twelve miles away (never measured).

However, we're just under a mile from the nearest Metra station, which is good for hourly (almost) service on weekdays and every other hour on weekends. And once we get there, it's about twenty miles and four blocks to Chicago Union Station, where we can catch Amtrak trains headed north south, and east, as well as west.

Sorry, but what is the point of this thread?  I live about 1/4 mile from the Shelby (MT) Amtrak Station (we call them "Depots", out here).  My last residences have been:  Jacksonville Beach, FL - 20 miles from Amtrak (JAX); Stowe, VT - 10 miles from Amtrak (WAB); Rye Brook/Port Chester, NY - 1/4 mile to NH, 10 miles to NYC; Rye, NY - 100' to NH; and Fleetwood (Mount Vernon), NY - 100 yards to NYC.  Are you 'under-cover' for the Senseless Bureau?
