Are there any Female railfans out there? Do they even exist?

My wife tried to be a railfan. Went out with me one day; first train she saw up close was a hot IM on the CP tear by us going at least 60, maybe 70mph, trailers and containers wiggling all over the place. I was thrilled; scared the bejeebers out of her.

Black does happen to be up there. I have seen some really cool looking locomotives but something about see that big black smoking demon thundering by sure gets the blood pumping in a way that just can't be achieved by anything less.

My wife is
whenever we go out of town to see a steam engine say the 3985 we stay the night so we can see it arrive and depart. She isnt much into diesels more into steam the romance of the rails all that stuff. And if I ahve had a hard day she says why dont you go out and run some trains and relax.
she fully supports the hobby and listens to me gab on about adhesion factors wheel configurations and such. I remeber one time my grandpa pointed to his bigboy model on the shelf and asked her if she knew what it was and she replied yup its a bigboy 4-8-8-4 with a centipede tender. His mouth nearly hit the floor.

Seh wants us all to head to Cheyenne and catch an exscurson some time.

and she isnt going to sell off my collection when I die.

Yes trainfinder there really are girls.... who like trains, I've given many cab rides over the years, the common complaint though is that the machines are sooooo dirty, they need a womans touch!!!!

My wife got addicted to railfanning by associating with a known, manic, ferroequinologist... me.

She has been broken of the habit of saying "look at the choo choo", can now tell the difference between an EMD and a GE, and surprised an NS engineer by asking about the difference between train brakes and locomotive brakes.

Colors- there's nothing prettier than an old fashioned E painted green and white... with "Southern" on the side....

I have been married six years, and while my wife thinks I'm playing with toys (arguably so), and can't understand why I valunteer when I don't get payed anything and often come home covered in grease and dirt, she has a wonderfull time when we travel by train and is already looking foreward to our next trip.

Is she a railfan? SHURE!

Is it me, or does it seem that when traveling by train there is a cammaderie between passengers?

I agree with you to a point. My first wife's father was an engineer on the C&O,
her brother worked at the shops at Raceland. All she could do wa tolerate me,
and my love for railfanning. We don't actually 'create'our own. There are bunches
of things to do,if they want to they will.

The NMRA has activities for the women at their national conventions, but those usually aren't train related. That's where the "train widows" hang out. The ones who like trains do the regular activities.
