On the railroad for four days straight - two as student engineer. Getting to know some of the subtle parts of the profile - the spots where it doesn't really look like things change, but they do. One minute you're riding down a hill right on the desired speed with a "first service," the next minute you're either grinding to a stop or starting to go faster.....
Getting pretty good at the starts and stops - even made a pinpoint stop on an upgrade - and when I say pinpoint stop it involves lining up the door of a baggage car with a 20 foot wide raised platform. Trying to hit it downgrade will be a little more problematic, but I'll get my chance...
Crowds were light on the 4th - we didn't have a single canoe or kayak, despite phenomenal weather.
As for now, I'm pooped. Time for bed.

As to public displays of fireworks, we tried to watch the NBC broadcast of fireworks from Bedloes (now known as "Liberty") Island. First, they had to have some would-be singers show their ignorance (the man who tried to sing Katherine Lee Bates poem ("O beautiful for spacious skies....") either cannot read music or thinks that he knows better than the composer of the well-known melody how the melody should be sung. It is really grating to hear such liberties taken with any well-known tune. I won't comment on the other offerings except to say that I did not see any connection between what I heard and Independence Day. I did appreciate the John Phillips Sousa march that I heard (Saturday or Sunday night, I heard an hour of his compositions being played--stirring!) Once the program reached the firewoks, the sound could be cut off.

Think I'm lucky to be awake this early: it was after 10:30 when I went to bed, and right at 11 p.m., when I last remember anything, when sleep took over.

Good Morning and peace be with you. 75 and partly clear in Carolina this morning. I slept too much yesterday and have been up most of the night piddlng around on the computer.
I got a bad report from the hand surgeon. It seems that my right hand has osteo (AKA degenerative) arthritis in two knuckles. Nothing can be done about it and I guess I wil be left handed after a while. I really should start learning to write left handed. It can't be much worse than what I can scribble at present with the right.
That said, everyone have a great safe day and keep cool as possible.

....This is so strange....A church group taking such action.
I can't imagine why they choose this kind of action at such a sacred last Memorial for a Service person...

Quentin, they are not Baptist, and certainly not Christians. They have been asked by the real Baptists not to call themselves baptists and have ignored it. According to them, they are the only ones on the planet doing G-D's will and work. Makes me want to puke..... Nuff said

And I believe the security / police have the right and duty to keep them at a distance at such Services. What right do they have to overrun such priviate Services that are for a family of the deceased.

The last event I heard of them being at had them kept a substantial distance from the procedings by a substantial group of people, many of whom were there for exactly that reason.
I've also heard of them having "vehicle problems" and having great difficulty finding anyone to assist them.
The best thing that could happen would be for the media to ignore them and for the anti-protest folks to continue to force them further and further away at each event. Do so in a proper and legal way and eventually they'll give up or do something that forces/allows legal action to be taken toward them.

This bunch took it into their heads to turn up at a couple of funerals of Canadian Forces personnel killed in Afghanistan. After issuing a storm of press releases, they first had trouble getting themselves across the Canada/US border, and then their Canadian compatriots couldn't or didn't show up at the events. It became clear this bunch couldn't organize their way out of a paper bag.
It is a great day here today. It is 70° now with a high of 77°, not much wind and low humidity.
There has been good progress made on all of the recent RR issues in western Canada. The Moose Jaw, SK- Minneapolis/St. Paul line has been reopened at Roche Percee, SK. Now CP is planning to move all of the stranded traffic between there and Minot, ND back into Canada and on to its' destinations via detour routes. That will give them better access from the north side to assist their repairs in the area around Minot. And CN and CP have resumed their directional running through the Fraser Canyon after that bridge fire on the CN line at Cisco, BC.
I'm off to enjoy the day.

Tom, sorry to hear about that diagnosis of your hand, hopefully things will work out.
That "Westboro Group" has been in our local area several time of recent around Ft. Knox, Radcliff, Elizabethtown and even here in Louisville. They are not, and have not been welcomed around here.
Thus far, there have not been any major altercations with them in this area; although what Larry said about things happening to their vehicles and not being able to find any service has happened........

Once the "Westboro Group" people get an idea into their heads, it is impossible for the idea to be dislodged even after reality is explained to them.
Several years ago, the clan descended upon our area and proceeded (with proper legal permits) to walk about churches which they believed needed to be walked about. Our church, which has a denominational name that is somewhat similar to that of a denomination which could, in their minds, be properly walked about, was one they chose to demonstrate against. Our pastor spoke to the leader of the group, telling him that they were mistaken--and the leader did not believe him (apparently he thought that all churches with a certain word in their names were alike).
As to vehicular trouble, it is not necessary for local citizenry to add to their problems; such action only adds to the group's idea that they are right.
Busy, Busy day today! Again, I feel like a one-armed wallpaper hanger. We only had 36 people show up for Produce/Bread Trucks this morning, so I was back home before 10 a.m. Then, went to the store, to pick up some meats and veggies for us. When I got up there, found out my prescriptions weren't ready: I had called them in yesterday (yes, the Pharmacy was open yesterday). So I came home, unloaded and put away the groceries, and caught the bus back up to the store.
On the Produce Truck this morning: potatoes, iceburg lettuce, shredded lettuce, cabbage, turnips and plums.
For supper tonight: Tuesday Mexican Fiesta is back on the menu:
Burritos, tacos, chimichangas, fajitas, enchiladas, quesadillas, and tortilla chips w/your choice of mild, medium, or spicy salsa, picante sauce or con queso.
We did have some thunder roll through, but I haven't looked out, so I don't know if we actually got any rain or not. And I didn't see any lightning. So far today, our high got up to 88 degrees, but it is very humid.

Rain again last nite. Around 2 or more inches - depending on where your house sits. It's ok with me cuz we can handle the moisture, but just about an inch east of us they will just add the water to the already underwater farm ground and houses. But sun shining now and we have the humidity of Houston - 74 degrees and 85% humidity. Ah summer in the true midwest! (sorry Joe and Quentin)

No apologies needed, Mookie, as far as I'm concerned. We had the thunder yesterday; but, if we got any rain, it was just a few drops, and that was it. Guess we'll need to water the flowers again tonight.
There's not much happening around here this afternoon, except for my eyes being really tired. One person is sleeping, the other person is reading, and I'm here on the computer. Went over to the doctor's office this morning to have my blood drawn for the tests next Tuesday.
For the rest of the afternoon/evening, here's what I've come up with:
There is an assortment of meats, lettuce, tomatoes, onion, cheese, pickles, on the serving station. You can fix whatever combination you prefer. There's also an assortment of chips,pretzels, etc.
For Dessert: Cakes, pies and cobblers, and, of course, all the different flavors of ice cream and ice novelties that are in the freezer.

Muggy here as well, currently at 63%. We had a weak cold front come through, but the promised thunderstorms didn't organize until everything was past us. Eastern NY got a severe thunderstorm watch.
Unfortunately had to bury a member of the FD today who lost a long battle with cancer. It was noted in the eulogy that he always regarded problems as "bumps in the road," but this one was just too big to surmount.
Finally finished the laundry from this weekend, so it's time to go fold/hang/put away...
....Still looking for some rain here....But....I believe we might be into a weather pattern where rain might be few and far between for a while.

Yard was fertlized again today, so now we certainly could use a bit of moisture for it.
Well, the westboro baptist klavern was a no show at the Marine funeral yesterday. I think they would have had to contend with a very large and belligerent crowd if they had.
We had a lilttle over 2 inches of rain here night before last. It is interesting to note that just sixty miles from here as the fly crows, there's a huge wildfire and they didn't get a drop.. Other places nearby yesterday got 3 inches plus and we had none, despite all the thunder we heard. The vagaries of weather are hard to comprehend at times.

Larry, sympathies extended on the loss of a fellow comrad/firefighter. Last night, we couldn't tell if it was fireworks being let off, or if it was thundering. But think it was fireworks. Sarah definitely had to water her flowers last night.
Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go. Got fresh hot water for our hot tea drinkers. There's also some freshly brewed iced tea (both sweet and unsweetened).

Well as I mentioned a couple of days ago, this bunch has lots of windup but not much follow through.
It's been hotter than heck, by our standards the last few days. Already 70° at 10 AM and going up to 81° today. This has kind of messed up my sleep habits, and put me off my game as it were.
Nothing else to report on right now.
Paula, the hand is not doing better. It is painful and time consuming to make a reply or write anything at all. I have to go back and make changes to about every third word, where my wayward fingers insert letters or digits or whatever. I just try and do it anyway, and will contnue to do it.

It has been another busy afternoon for me around home. Getting errands done, and trying to find a way to not only go to me niece's wedding Saturday afternoon, but get to the reception and back to a bus stop to get back home again. So far, no luck.

Well, good Friday morning everyone. As you can see, I did manage to get going this morning, and am ready for my ride. So I decided to come on in here, and get breakfast for you guys and gals.

I can't remember what our temp is this morning, but when I awoke, we were getting light rain showers. Later on this morning, we're to be getting some thundershowers, with a high today of 84, 85 degrees. Back in the 90s tomorrow.
