Most of the problems I've had getting logged on has been between 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. EDT.  And the wait is usually 10 to 20 minutes.

Borderline close to timing out when I hit reply to make this post at 5:05 PM MDT. Last few minutes, while trying to read Newswire, ranges from very bad to almost normal speed. I can't discern any pattern from one type of page to the other. 60 users.

I entered the site at 11:00 PM MDT. Unbelievably between 5:08 PM MDT when I made the above post and now, 11:15, there have been exactly two posts made to the forum. One each to the Trackside with Trains thread and one to the Goosefest 2009 thread. It took 15 minutes to check out these two threads, get back to this thread, and hit reply. There are 18 obviously dedicated users.

Around 9:20 PM EDT last night - Tues., 29 March 2011 - I couldn't log on in even an unreasonable time (1 - 2 minutes) despite 3 tries.  Gave up, tried again this morning - even then, took about 30 - 40 seconds, which is longer than normal.

There are 16 individuals online at this time (5:53 AM CDT), but the site is slightly faster than last night...at least for now.

I've had problems the last few days...slow or no abiltiy to open, no automatic replies.  Did send an email to customer services last night.

RIDEWITHMEHENRY is the name for our almost monthly day of riding trains and transit in either the NYCity or Philadelphia areas including all commuter lines, Amtrak, subways, light rail and trolleys, bus and ferries when warranted. No fees, just let us know you want to join the ride and pay your fares. Ask to be on our email list or find us on FB as RIDEWITHMEHENRY (all caps) to get descriptions of each outing.

I called customer service and they said they are working on the problem, which I was told is being caused by high forum traffic at night.  I was told that they do not know when it will be fixed.

When something like this happens, it has a two-stage effect.  The first stage is that forum participants are unable to get on.  Because they fail to get on, they may try less often, and thus not get on when the problem has cleared up.  So overall, there is less participation.

The second stage is that when members feel inclined to post, they may be refrain from doing so because they feel that nobody will read it or respond because the forum is so dead from the suppressed activity.

A forum builds momentum, and if that momentum is lost, it can take a long time to build it back up.  It is like a train.  In the past, this forum has had a lot of momentum.

IMO - that momentum has been lacking a lot lately - not due to the slow forum speed - but from a select few posters that have been taking just about every topic and using it to further their own personal (or political) agendas.

It's been fun.  But it isn't much fun anymore.   Signing off for now.

I don't know.  I think that might actually build momentum.

That may be their explanation....but I'll have to call BS to that.  There is no way, 100-200 posters (and I have yet to see the 'Who is online' counter over 100) should be able to cause any server hosting a forum to bog down to the extent we see.  I'd venture that the server being used for the forum also serves to support other valid business uses for Kalmbach....improperly programed business applications have the power to grind any computer to a halt....using the wrong database call can hog all the computational power of even a Main Frame computer if it is working against a large database (been there, done that in my prior career).

The slow down we see on the forum is being caused by applications on that server that have nothing to do with the forum.  I suggest Kalmbach look to the other applications they are running on the server during the evening hours, which they view as 'off time' since their business office force is not working at the time.

Things seem to up and running well this afternoon....at least better than I've had for the last couple of days.

10:30 EDT and things are positively flying - 67 folks on-line.

Hopefully they found something and will let us know what it was...

9:15PM PDT, 34 users and the forum is snappy.

Besides server loading, another possibility is congestion on the servers internet connection - I'd guess that the server sits in some data center as opposed to Kalmbach's office building and that data center may be facing congestion issues.

Maybe the servers derailed.

Maybe we are looking at this problem from the wrong end. Although I am no geek could it be that uploads from each of our computers are being limited to 1 at a time? I have noticed that there is never a post that has the same time stamp as another? Probably am wrong but last speed test when uploading was only .23 mbps?

....Don't know if it is back up to correct speed or not, but seems to be doing very much better than many of us have been experiencing in the past several weeks.

Never had a problem until today. Then, getting on at my usual time -- always between 5 and 5:30 p.m. CT -- found both Newswire & the Trainsmag forums glacially slow.

Same here.  It just took 4 minutes to load this reply page.

I just speed tested my internet connection and got a little over 14 meg, so it is definately at Trains end.

....An hour plus ago, I tried to do a post on here and it was so slow I gave up.  Now, it came up in a "reasonable time", not fast, just reasonable.

No wonder there is minimum activity of late on here...I thought the powers to be had  it restored, but seems not to be true this evening.

9:48PM PDT, 62 reported on-line, pages taking more than a half hour to load with many connection resets - my original reply was "re-setted" at least 5 times.
