Then of course, there is the venerable Amtrak AutoTrain.

This video has 36 cars behind the two GE diesels:

In the same vein, Amtrak's Chicago-Philadelphia "Pennsylvanian" usually ran with one baggage car, 2 coaches, a snack-bar coach, 5-7 express boxcars and 10-15 RoadRailers.

The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul

I'm astounded how long that train is.

I rode a Via Rails Canadian  in the '90s that had a baggage car, 2 coaches, a Skyline car, 18 sleepers, 3 diners, 3 Skyline Domes, (Three groups of 3 sleepers, diner, skyline, 3 sleepers) and a Park Dome observation car for a total of TWENTY NINE cars. Back in the fifties saw a few PRR "mail" trains that were in the passenger timetable but were primarily mail and express but had a coach for passengers and around Christmas ran up to 24 or 25 cars.

In the late 50's and early 60's B&O's Capitol Limited would routinely be 20 to 25 cars out of Chicago and then pick up cars from the Detroit originated Ambassador at Willard to continue on to Washington.  When making its station stop at Garrett with the engines stopped at the 'water stop' to get water for the steam generators, the rear of the train would block Randolph Steet - the main N-S street in town.

He made the comment that there wasn't a peanut to be found in the bowl of mixed nuts

Ha! Lucky for me I can obtain that myself at the local Central Market food store run by HEB.    They have 2-3 walls of nuts and nut mixtures.  :)     I think if your going to serve mixed nuts and load them up with almonds and peanuts it is a ripoff as well.   Kroger does that.

I wonder how many people were on board.

If I had to guess given the route to the Superbowl.   Probably very few people riding it and probably the train served more in a tailgating fashion nearby the Stadium.

I'm astounded how long that train is. They must entertain a lot of shippers and their families, in addition to RR brass and families. I never dreamed such trains were ever that long. I wonder how many people were on board.

Still in training.

Three HEP generator cars?

Suspect the Generator cars also act to keep various 'clientele's separated' on  the train in addition to the number of cars with open vestibules.

My recollection of when I rode a UP 844 excursion, the Power Cars have a through corridor in one side similar to an 11 bedroom Pulman car. I was able to walk the length of the train.

When UP moved its Chicago streamliners to the Milwaukee Road, they opened a bonded area to handle the liquor and their bar cars used full bottles. I rode other RR's in the fifties and sixties and never saw anything but mini bottles. Was UP alone?

The railroads I had the opportuity to ride before Amtrak - B&O, PRR, ACL, SAL, L&N and IC all served booze in minitures - tax sealed minitures.  With minitures there was no argument about the amount served - there was also no argument when it came time for the car's crew to account for the amount that had been sold.

While I was too young to partake myself, my parents would partake in a drink or two when we traveled.  During this period of time West Virginia was dry, B&O Stewards or Waiters-in-charge, would announce 'last call' about 20 minutes before Harpers Ferry or upon departure from Cumberland - so the drinks could be SERVED before the train entered West Virginia.

Never too old to have a happy childhood!

Aren't there normally several private rail cars wherever the super bowl is played? It sure looks like the way to travel.

AC might be the bigger need for this train in LA. Game day is supposed to top out around 85. Lots of railroad brass and important guests will be using this train as a hotel.

I would expect they would park it at LA Union Station which is just 12.5 miles from SOFI stadium.

Three HEP generator cars?

We use two HEP equipped cars on our Polar Express trains (12 cars).  Of course, heating takes a lot of juice.  When we park the train at night, we usually change over to just one genset, as it will handle the basic heat needs.  We're talking temps that frequenly dip into single digits that time of year.

I realized the original post was from 2011. I wonder if UP still does something like this?

New poster redshoesgirl indicated there was a UP special train this year, earlier in the thread, and I believe she mentioned BNSF ran something too.

One of our local railfans, CNW fan and past president of the CNWHS, was friends with Bill Wimmer, former UP vice president of engineering.  This friendship resulted in getting invited to ride some of the EC test cars and the business train on one of Mr. Wimmer's inspections.  Of course he took pictures, which he showed once at the local railfan's monthly meetings.

He had a picture of a large bowl of mixed nuts in the bar area on one of the cars.  He made the comment that there wasn't a peanut to be found in the bowl of mixed nuts.  Inferring that the officials were provided with the best on those trips.

Other interior pictures showed very nice cars on the inside.

Was UP the only RR to NOT use mini bottles of liquor on its bar cars?

Yes they do.

Two SD70M locomotives and 29 passenger and HEP cars on the way to Super Bowl LVI in LA on 02-06-22.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=C6OPAa7fvrA

Back in 2004 they sent 3985 east to pick up the business train and head to Houston for the Super Bowl.

I was excited to read about this and wondered why I hadn't heard anything about it heading to Los Angeles for the Super Bowl.

Then I realized the original post was from 2011.

I wonder if UP still does something like this?

Curious as to what is the max power out put of each power car? Trying to compare them to the various Amtrak HEP locos and motors.

I have no idea of the output of each of the power cars, however is suspect the power consumption of each of the 'passenger' cars is conspicuously higher than the normal consist of Amtrak cars/trains.

Man, upon further study, that is one impressive passenger train Union Pacific has amassed. LOL, how far away is it from BNSF's headquarters???

There's five deluxe sleepers, three crew cars, four business cars although one business car accomodates higher "crew" personnel on many trips. I wonder which business car has the "top dogs"? Then there are two dome lounges, a diner and a dome diner. What I wouldn't give for a seat there. I know I'd order the biggest steak. Could we hear from anyone lucky enough to have sampled this luxury train.

Consist: 21 Loads

UPP 3008 - Fuel Flat Car: UPTU 530048 - UP Bulktainer Load of Diesel

UPP 106 - "Shoshone" business car

UPP 201 - "Wyoming" deluxe sleeper

UPP 412 - "Lake Forest" deluxe sleeper

UPP 5779 - "Promontory" baggage car

UPP 314 - "Columbia River" crew sleeper

UPP 208 - Power Car

UPP 119 - "Kenefick" business car

UPP 202 - "Willie James" crew car

UPP 2066 - Power Car

UPP 101 - "Lone Star" business car

UPP 1605 - "Powder River" deluxe sleeper

UPP 1610 - "Portola" deluxe sleeper

UPP 413 - "Lake Bluff" deluxe sleeper

UPP 315 - "Little Rock" crew sleeper

UPP 5769 - "Council Bluffs" baggage car

UPP 9004 - "Harriman" dome lounge

UPP 9005 - "Walter Dean" dome lounge

UPP 302 - "Overland" diner

UPP 7011 - "Missouri River Eagle" dome diner

UPP 102 - "St. Louis" business car

David Harrison

Having a "St. Louis" business car on a Super Bowl train, in LA, with the Rams as a participant is ironic.

I suppose my age is showing but,  that train looks one heck of a lot better than any Amtrak I've ever seen.

.

Well, that's because it IS a lot better than any Amtrak train.  But I suppose the same can be said for any Class I railroad business train.  That's what you'd expect, since trains like this are run for marketing and public relations purposes and aren't expected to make a direct profit.
