Forum Petition-whitelist "***" (and modify other censors)
Posted by kolechovski on Wednesday, March 31, 2010 1:41 PM

Okay, I can't stand this anymore...guys, I think we should petition the site for some changes to its censor system.  First, the word *** shouldn't be censored at all.  Realy, it shouldn't be on any site, given the countless legitimate uses of it.  Especially on this site, where somebody describes an "angle asterisk asterisk asterisk asterisk".  I mean, come on.  How many of you know what an "angle asterisk asterisk asterisk asterisk" is?  I don't either.  Now with this being a railroad forum, I would expect a good bit about angle c0cks to be said.  Of course, there are many other normal uses of the word.  Why, just the other day, when a *** crowed, a ***-eyed c0ckatrice c0cked a shotgun at a c0cky c0cker spaniel.  I'm sure you guys witness such incidents all the time.  Nothing bad mentioning it, but the censor system would have you think otherwise.

In addition, I think a certain word that generally is changed to "female dog" should instead be changed to "complain".  On a forum like this, I think very few people are ever likely to call someone the word, meaning a female dog, but far more likely to say that people "complain" too much about stuff.  I propose this change to that censor thingy.

That's all I've got for now.  Does anybody else have any to add?  Who supports this request?

I'm whistling past the graveyard, but I think you are missing the point of the FORUM.

This is a place maintained by the Magazines(Kalmbach's) as a convience, and service to its readers, it is a place for the exchange of information, and ideas.  It has a pretty good following and most of us really appreciate the opportunities presented here.

One aspect I like is the fact that we can read, post and enjoy content Without the common vulgarities, cursewords and other linguistic slurs. I know within our society there are some who like their entertainment with all sorts of inclusive slurs and terms. Witness the success of some 'comedians' in the Entertainment Industry.

This Forum has instituted fairly strict measures of what is acceptable here, and what is not.; Eric Bergstrom set a pretty high bar, to his credit. It has been carried forward by Crandell and Norris. To their credit there are many personalities that come here, and at times it gets to be a little like hearding cats to maintain decorum.

We are a pretty pasionate lot, and all at times get overrun with exasperation.  Wanting to verbally lambast, but with respect to other adults, and in some instances their children and other young adults who enjoy passing thru here. We do try to contain, and rephrase what we would really like to say in some cases. But as adults we understand that moderation can sometimes make a better case for a point than an abusive, verbal broadside.

So a tip of the hat to Murphy Siding, and Selector and move on or move out. The rules are posted within the website

Just so you know, I have nothing against keeping it clean, especially taking into consideration the ages of the people viewing.  What I'm getting at is false positives (which many censor thingies suffer from).  I've mentioned 2 examples that I think are worthy of being changed (1 being removed, and the other changed to the other form most likely meant).

Well, we already know that anglecock doesn't present a problem, and neither should the cocky cocker spaniel.

I think that this list of words to be censored comes from the server, and not from the Forum moderators, either or all of which probably feel as bad about it as we do.

My very un-favorite is up for test:

    Wa***he car.

And what do you know.  Somebody hasn't realized that Sierra Hotel is a common word ending, and is frequently followed by a word beginning with Tango.  The dirty-minded censor program assumed that I was trying to slip in the anglo-saxonism for excrement.

So we all have to watch our language, even when we haven't typed anything offensive.

Holy Anglecow Batman!  Are you sure you're not a day early for April Fools?

I would imagne, that the auto-snagger is part of some package deal with the server, or some software package, and comes with a preset list of *naughty* words..  It's probably costly to have some sort of system where you can pick your own words to **** or not to ****.

If it's really bugging you, maybe the best solution is to find some synonyms for the words in question.  In the end,  I don't see what all the carping is about. Laugh

^^^God excrement!  Now there's an idea!

As for April Fool's...where is that international date line???  Where is it??? So, are you SURE it's too early?  Cause it seems to be April 1 somewhere by that logic.  See, April Fool's Day can technically last 48 hours.  And people who want to have fun with such a thing will milk it down to the last second like that.  Oh, great, now I just gave an idea like that to a group of people...like this...

I think we should all be adult enough to handle words that would get asterisked because the terms are lingo, a parlance, or whatever, that goes against some non fan's knowledge about our topic.  My father used to tell the story of steamship picture he place on display at the hometown library with the title, "The Tramp is a Lady" which got him many snickers and derogatary remarks because they didn't know what a tramp steamer was nor that a ship is always referred to in the feminine gender.  Railroading has many from hot box to anglecock (gets by as one word, but as two the end gets asterisked) just to start the long list.   But I don't think we should have to contend with such censorship because we are adults or adults in learning.

Oh, no!  Youse be in trouble, boy!  You mentioned"goats", "fog" and "Eleanor" in the same sentence!!!  You may get a pass, as you didn't mention Nash "Rambler"!  I used the acronym "N***", as in enviro-N***s (refering to the National Socialists of Germany) once and went into the "sin bin" for a week.  I have, recently, slipped a "NIMBY" into a post and haven't been called on the carpet, even though my NIMBY thread was deleted.  How 'bout them "Green Goats"?  I must also mention that I have never heard of a cow getting bloat from over indulging corn.  Is that possible?  I have seen them do that on alfalfa.  Of course, we feed our far-superior beef on barley.  Corn-fed-beef is for the silly Yuppies on the left coasts, both of them!  P. S.:  anyone wan'na buy some torpedoes?  Very old and not guaranteed.  ***!  (Norris said 'damned' recently, so I guess that's okay).  Lighten up, kids!  That thread, along with the one on poor "Darwin", were really funny!  Might that be against the law in SD and BC?  I am aware of your politics, so won't go any further....
