Gee, Joe, I thought I caught Matt on a bad day (he didn't even eat all of his fries!).  He was a sweetheart, perfectly willing to hold my hand when we went walking.  But yes, I'd hate to see what he's like on a better day--he could have powered the guy's laptop even on that day!

(Actually, Jay was pretty much the same type of sweetheart that Matt was.  Charlie wanted to do things by himself, though--typical younger brother.)

Actually, Ray's been asking for a kid--I hope he gets her!Evil [}:)]  Talk about insanity!

Joe, tell Matt thanks for the feather!  Always good to have a  good laugh with a feather!  Even
though Mookie and I didn't need it, to help us laugh:  just made us laugh even more!!

And yes, there is beef stew w/cornbread for supper (and your lunch tonight at work, Joe).
Also on the menu tonight:  turkey and dumplings (made with the turkey that was left from
Sunday Dinner.

Dessert tonight:  apple turnovers, chocolate cake, chocolate pie, and peach cobbler.

Good Wednesday morning to one and all.

Joe, thank you for putting on the coffee, and making the juice and hot chocolate!

Breakfast is now ready:  hot oatmeal w/toast, bacon, sausage, biscuits and
sausage gravy, grits, cream of wheat are on the warmer bar.

And, since it looks like no one  came in for supper last night, guess what's for
lunch today?!?!  LEFTOVERS!

Very chilly here this morning:  when I awoke this morning, the temp was right at
51, and I believe it has dropped a degree.  Going to find some long sleeves to
put on today.  Too early to be turning on the heat.

Everyone have a great day, and I'll talk with you later.

I will take a plate of whatever I can reach for lunch.

And hold on to your chairs everyone - I would also like an apple turnover, please and thank you.

It's fall - we need to start thinking about apples.

Well, it is comfortably cool this week, but my money is on being in the high 70's up to mid-80's before October ends.

Update on no new neighbors next door.  Don't pack quite yet people!  He bought the place in late July and has been over there every day - fussing with it.  They got new cupboards for the kitchen and a rearrangement.  New indoor paint, new insulation for the attic, (that helps us, too), new gutters, new baseboards, new flooring in bathroom, overhauling the basement to make it back to a 2 bedroom with a finished basement, pumped up sidewalks so I don't sprain my ankle, fall on the driver and kill him, dirt around the foundation, trees trimmed and cut down - and I haven't seen a for rent sign yet.  I think I am in love!  (until he raises our rent!)

Still has some landscaping to do outside, but what he has done looks mighty nice.  It is like having a neighbor since he is there every nite until about 9 pm.  He just doesn't sleep with us........

As soon as he slows down a bit, I might tell him he should go trainwatching and quit working so hard....?

Rain on its way tonite - mostly tomorrow - so BC - put the top up on your bike!

AND - I am down to 1.5 in-baskets of work to clean out!  Moving right along....right after this nap......@

A p p l e  P i e ! Dinner [dinner]

Always one of my favorites, and I can make a mean one, too.  From scratch.   None of this store-bought crust and canned apples stuff.   A thick slice of XXXX cheddar cheese or a scoop of vanilla ice cream is always a plus.

Deep dish apple pies will be available tomorrow...  Your choice, crumb crust or traditional rolled crust.  I don't do lattice....

I tried to talk daughter in taking granddaughters out to our favorite apple farm (after I had them on the road I'd work in the trip to Rochelle!), but no go, at this tender age.

But you can bribe me with apples like you bribe my sister with chocolate!  Golden Delicious are the preferred variety, when they're fresh.  Also appreciate the fresh, non-preserved cider.  We will instead visit a nearby farm stand (of sorts--also has a petting zoo) with the girls of all ages.

Tree, you could entice me to eat a little, if you're cooking the pies!  (Any chance of doing one of apple pie's distant cousins, mincemeat?)

My bug informed me that it was 43 degrees locally when I left this morning.  The warmer lake provided a spectacular cloud bank off to the east (and I guess some wet weather in southwestern Michigan).  Broke out a long-sleeved shirt for the first time in months.  Tonight's supposed to be just about as cold as last night--then it gets warmer and wetter.

It's nice out now, and we're going to do some local errands and dining out on foot tonight.  And we'll capture that butterfly (Sis knows the one of which I speak).

And we have a winner! 39 degrees last night - the coolest low temperature posted so far.

Lots of rain on the way from after midnight tonight through tomorrow evening. Could be up to 2 inches by the time it is all said and done. And then more on the way for Saturday.

Presuming I'm not washed away by all the rain, I'll be back in tomrrow afternoon.

Evening All,

Carl! You said the magic word! Apple pie is wonderful and all, but I am a HUGE fan of fresh cider. Back when I lived in those parts, my Uncle, Aunt, Cousin and myself would make an annual trip up to North Freedom, WI for the Fall Color Train. On the way, we would stop at an orchard (Sky-Hi maybe?). I always delighted in picking up a gallon of their cider!

Jay: I'm thinking your plans involve what most members of this forum would be doing in that corner of the world. If that's true, I think you're in for a spectacular day. I've never been there personally, but my cuz has, and the pictures he brought back were magnificent! Have fun!

Willy: Just be glad you'll be at 39ºF with all that rain. Drop a couple degrees more and 2 inches of rain can turn into a LOT of snow! Of course, some of us nutcases actually like the "S" word, but I've found that otherwise, it's pretty universally despised. At any rate, hope you make it through the night without floating away!

Well all, must be on my way. Have cantor practice tonight. Hope you all have a great evening!

The first couple of specks are showing up on radar off to my west, so it probably isn't too long before the rain sets in. It won't be as cold tonight as last night and in fact there could even be some severe thunderstorms tomorrow afternoon. I'm one of the nutcases who prefers snow over rain, but even I have to admit that it is too early to be wishing for snow.

Surprise.

Surprise.

Surprise. (As Gomer Pyle would say   Big Smile [:D]   )

Yeah, I know it has been a while. Hello all of the regulars and hello to the new guys too. (New to me anyway  )

Have I got a story to tell you all. This is true too. Some of you know Duchess has been very sick. She was close to dying with liver failure. The vet did not think she was going to live. But the liver is a remarkable organ and can regenerate itself with time and proper care, vitamins, meds, etc.

During her ordeal I had to work and try to take care of her, plus doing other things too. I never get a lot of sleep and was getting even less during this time. Since I work second shift and stay up late I am not a morning person. I am very clumsey during the first hour I am awake and just not operating at 100%. I often get up and walk Duchess as one of the first 2 or 3 events of the day. Half the time I get outside and wonder if I have put blue jean shorts on over my boxer shorts and have to look down and check. Thank God so far I did have presence of mind to do so, even tho many mornings I didn't remember doing so.  The other morning I got up make my run to the boy's room, started making coffee and took Duchess out for her first walk of the morning. Here it is 8:30 in the morning, on a school day no less, when I had my normal thought "I hope I put on some blue jean shorts." Well I looked down as I always do to check and much to my surprise there I was in the middle of the street wearing only a t-shirt and my boxer shorts. Needless to say the walk to the house was very brisk. I was very glad that the school kids were on their busses and there was no traffic on my road during that 3 or 4 minute walk.  Anybody else had a near "streaking" appearance lately?

Soooooo how is everyone?       Wink [;)]

(I certainly hope no one hurts themselves as they get up off the floor after reading that story.)

Morning everyone.......

Well, we're going to try the corn silage thing again today, going to head to my parents again, will probably be a "chop 'til I drop" day with the rain forecast for Friday.  Hopefully the field dried sufficiently to avoid needing a second tractor to get through the worst spots, I don't care to bury anything.

Apple pie and cider sound REALLY good for a late evening snack, might have to swing by in the tractor and chopper for a quick bite tomorrow evening, if it's on the menu.

I'm one of those people who love driving in the snow, but having a 3/4 ton, 4wd diesel pickup does help greatly (just stay off the brakes, that's what downshifting is for).Big Smile [:D]Big Smile [:D]

See everyone later, I might swing in quick before I head to the cornfields.

James!  And Duchess!  Welcome back! It has been pretty sparse on regulars in the diner here lately.

Not to worry - The Driver feeds the birds every morning in our backyard and on weekends, he does it before anything else - in his t-shirt and boxers he wears for sleep.  Course, there isn't much traffic in the backyard, but he is just as covered as anyone on the street.  You are good to go, guy!

Tree:  lattice is easy - just roll out your top crust and cut with a sharp knife - strips up to 1" and lay them first one way and then ta'other.  You don't have to interlace, just lay them there.  No steam holes required.

Anyone try the Fuji apples?  I like my apples sweet and crisp or mushy doesn't matter.  These are excellent for eating.

Randy - we looked at the corn/soybeans locally last weekend - thought of you - must have been the 'corn'.   They are getting really dead looking.  Guess that is the best sign?

Joe - had my 7 year old grandson over last nite - I thought of Matt.  They would do well together.  He brought his Thomas engine with him and several others in the crew.  Then I got my Locomotive magazine and he grabbed that right away and started looking through it while we were talking.  Ah - that's my boy! Now to show him the difference between 70's and 9's.....

Carl - flower power! Little wind on the way.

Willy - rain forecast last nite, nothing but the neighbors porch light showed up all nite.  Maybe you will fare better than we did.  Supposed to rain on the Huskers this weekend.  Won't make a difference!  Blah.....

Going to go hide under the last of the flowers in the garden.  Maybe whistle the theme from Brian's Song........

Jim!!!  Welcome back!!  You've sure been missed around here!

Cannonball, don't worry:  I'm not miffed at anyone for helping out around here
yesterday.  Allergies were really bad yesterday, and just wasn't around as much.

We woke up here in Louisville with a temp of 46 this morning.

Tree, thanks so much for the apple pie!  That was delicious.

Mookie, if those flowers are in the sun, I may join you there.

Coffee is on, juice is made, and have the hot chocolate and cocoa ready.

In honor of Jim being back, we have sausages and sausage gravy w/biscuits
this morning, along with some bagels for Tree, and some oatmeal w/raisins &
spice and toast, and scrambled eggs.

Getting ready to put some beef stew, beef vegetable soup, and cream of potato
soup on for the specials today.  (Lunch and supper tonight).  Will also have plenty
of cornbread to go with the stew.

And since apples are aplenty right now, will bake some more apple pies, apple
turnovers, and apple dumplings for desserts today.

Everyone have a great day!!

Welcome back, Jim- glad to hear that Duchess is doing better.  I've seen you on AIM every now and then and thought about pinging you, but figured I'd better leave you alone.

Spent last evening packing our son and daughter-in-law's possessions into the minivan; tonight we'll pack our own clothes and hit the road for Florida tomorrow morning.  I'll certainly be on the lookout for those free internet PCs that hotels sometimes have in their lobbies, and let everyone know how we're doing.  Should be an uneventful trip weather-wise, as there are no big storms headed towards the land of orange groves and theme parks.
