A little later the switcher came back west bound. Couldn't read the side, but it was three words. Hopefully someone from the area will know what it was.

Thanks Rich. They were coming from the direction of the museum. By the way, does the museum have their own switch engine? The one pushing the electric didn't look like it was lettered for NS. Of course, with the rain nothing was all that clear.

Tom,

The electric loco painted in Virginian livery is one of the many examples of rolling stock at the VMT.  A number of units needed to be moved when the C&O 4-8-4 was taken off display last week.

A few minutes ago I logged onto the railcam just in time to catch a switch engine apparently pushing some kind of electric locomotive. It was letter as "Virginian." Unfortunately, I only had time to hit "print screen." I was able to paste the image into WordPerfect, but I haven't been able to figure out how to get it posted here. Anyone else see this?

....Across the tracks in front of the building on the left, we see emergency vehicles, including a fire truck....??  And just a few minutes ago dozens upon dozens of people walking from the distance around the parking lot towards that same building right across the tracks on the left of the scene.....Wonder what that's all about...?

whoops, posted before I was done.

I then saw it come back westbound on track 3, and I tried to use the VMT cam to capture a closeup... Stupid VMT cam (or my PC, more likely) decided to replay a couple of minutes worth of video from an hour prior, before it updated to the present time, and by then the car was long gone.

Caught this a few minutes ago.  Came in on the left on track 1 (nearest to camera) westbound.  Stopped just beyound the far signals and then reveresed to eastbound on track 2 to track 3 as seen here.

This past weekend was the famed Strawberry Festival in Downtown Roanoke and the Chilli Cookoff. What you all were seeing was the Chilli Cook off on Saturday at the Rilside Plaza Amphitheater.

Roanoke Rail Day is coming up this weekend on Saturday from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.  Fantastic attractions, specials and events happening all around Roanoke.

....Surprise.....Two groups of engines in view.  Total of 7.  On different tracks...??  Nothing moving.

Edit:  2 min. later, checking, and they had moved out of sight.

Some very nice variety of locos is going by.  I'm having a bad time with saving snapshots of them, but you all can check out either cam for good stuff.  Do they have any special train movements planned for the day?

Rich - I think you are right. After reading your post, I checked the VMT web site. They are indeed having "Roanoke Rail Day." I never gave that a thought.

Well, i just tried to grab what would've been a nice screenshot with the packed area across the tracks, along with a train entering the scene with that blue loco with the long, white horizontal stripe.  Too bad I'm using a different computer that can't grab the snapshots from the live feed.  even worse, i see that although the VMT cam is back up, now it really is not working properly and it will not refresh the image at all.

EDIT-the VMT cam just fixed itself...after the blue and white loco had gone by, of course.

It looks like something is happening this morning in the parking lot across the track. Some tents/booths hae been erected and a good number of people heading that way on the sidewalks. Maybe a farmers market/flea market/etc. After seeing the race a few weeks ago, it seems this area might be popular for different activities.

Michael, you are looking at a picture from the old camera, which was first on top of the hotel looking down.  The current one is outside, on top of a pedestrian walkway that looks towars the VMT cam.

Guys, according to some information, the VMT railcam might have gone down due to heavy use, and once again, I managed to miss a steam loco movement the one day I wasn't on.  Did anybody get pictures of it yesterday?  Here is the article about what should have come through on both railcams.

UPDATED: Chesapeake & Ohio 614 begins move home

ROANOKE, Va. — Chesapeake & Ohio J-3a steam locomotive No. 614 will begin its move to the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway Heritage Center in Clifton Forge, Va., today. It’ll move from the Virginia Museum of Transportation, where it’s been on temporary display.

Norfolk Southern and Buckingham Branch will deliver the engine, and the exact schedule is dependent on the railroads’ freight operations. To clear tracks on museum grounds to get the engine to the NS interchange, the museum is moving some of its equipment outdoors temporarily. That will include Norfolk & Western Class A steam locomotive No. 1218.

Updates on the move will be available on the museum’s Facebook page.

The C&O engine is the last commercially manufactured 4-8-4-type locomotive in existence.

MQuonceHotelRoanoke

The camera is actually on top of the Hotel and is zoomed in looking down the tracks.

Ummmm??? you might wanna double-check that.

It might be on top of the enclosed overhead walkway, and I suspect it is, given that it sometimes shakes in the wind.  But using Google Earth and drawing vectors from distant points through near points that are in a straight line in the view from the camera, they converge on the walkway near what I assume to be a stairs from the sidewalk up to the walkway.

Mike,

A question if I may. Is the camera inside or outside of the walkway across the tracks. From my perspective it appears to be inside.

Thanks for all the great feedback everyone! I look forward to being a part of this forum. And I certainly appreciate the grammar police at any time! I have shared much of the remarks already with our team and will be getting in touch with the Virginia Museum of Transportation to see if one of their members can jump on board and assist as well.

To answer a few questions, there is a Coca-Cola distribution facility just out of the camera's view, which explains all the trucks you'll see probably on a daily basis.  I will have to check on the antennas and see what that is about and unfortunately I am not allowed to post about our business opportunities. However I can assure you that it will be back online soon.

Happy Viewing! It should be clearing up here a little today after a pretty good rain storm came through yesterday.
