Word today has it they are at IRM for long term storage...check the webcam...
Would anyone have updates on where these CNW engines would be today? Are they to be heading somewhere, or have they already been sent to storage? It would be nice to see them one LAST time!

Have pics of them switching the Chrysler plant last fall in Belvedere, IL. Just can't figure out how to get the pics up on this site. Any help please?
kschmidt According to postings on the CNW Newsgroup the trips will be leaving between 8am-9am on both days. It doesn't sound like there is much public access to the Kate Shelley bridge area for those that are not riding the train. Also I don't believe that the CNW units will be pulling the train on the Iowa Interstate, but I could be wrong. Didn't see any mention of power for the that train. Keith Schmidt

If you are interested in getting right smack up to the leads of the KS bridge, then you're correct that there's no public access. However, there is a small bridge across the river just north with unobstructed views of the KS itself, accessable from the Boone side (access from the west side has been cut off due to construction of the new bridge)
The impression I get from various railfan lists is that the UP is supplying cars (and the two CNW engines) for the trip on their line. The IAIS is supplying the cars and engines for the trip on their line.
When the UP trip is done, supposedly the cars will depart Boone for Council Bluffs. I don't know if the CNW engines will take the cars west, but I'd guess they would.

Here is the reply I got from the C&NWHS:
"Both trips are scheduled to depart at 0900, but may change.Times are not set in stone. For the Saturday trip we should depart Atlantic around 1300 and arrive back in DM around 1630. The Atlantic trip will NOT have the C&NW locos. There are many locations along the route to photograph the train. It depends on your style and what you want for background."

So I guess that the CNW locos will only be on the Friday trip to Boone. That is a one way trip, so I wonder where the equipment will go from there? Does anyone know if both trips will use the same passenger cars? I'm also wondering if the CNW locos will go back to Des Moines or head elsewhere.

Tugboat Tony The pair are officially going to be in Des Moines for the CNWHS conv. then to storage. I'm personally very torn about this... I grew up and started railroading with all the CNW, so I hate to see the last of them gone... but I get a personal joy out of snuffing the fire and capping a stack on a GE locomotive. Once their parked the C44-9s will be late to come out of storage. very very late!

Do you or does anyone know exactly where in Des Moines they will be on display during the convention (5/14-5/17)? I tried checking the CNWHS website but did not find any details.
I missed 'em again....grr.

WSORatSussex CNW 8701 just got a warrant SB from Airport to MP53 on the Milwaukee Sub. (12:01) Sounds like there must be some work around MP53 and the dispatcher couldn't get them past there right away. It sounds like this may be the last run. Good luck to anyone out there lookin! Be Safe -- Ed

As soon as I read your post, I headed out to Bain Station Road, only to see the signals at the south end of Bain go green, meaning the train had just cleared Gurnee. I hung around a while listening to the scanner, just to be sure, and soon i heard the 8701 give back it's warrant.
Thanks much for the update, Ed.
I'll have my 'ears on' around Butler USA all weekend and will update this thread if I hear anything.

I guess I'm down to hoping they're running where I can get to on Sunday.
I think they were through St Francis around 2:00pm.

Well without hearing where they are and the 'bingo' time passing (drive time to Randolph, take pics/delay, drive back and get to work on time) I guess I miss out this time.
Word I heard is they are on the MPRSS today supposedly leaving around 8 (not sure if that's out of Butler or Proviso), but I'd like to catch them at their CPA to me which is Randolph, WI. Hopefully (with a little help) I will!
The MSSPR arrived in Butler around 16:15 this afternoon with CNW8701 in the lead. They setout a few cars and dropped off some bad order power. It sounded like they would be headed on South, perhaps after a crew change as they were told to leave the units back on the main. They were sitting right by the Capital Drive bridge when I passed by at 16:45.
jeffhergert Another engineer in Boone said he had heard they were trying to keep them near Proviso, lest they wander too far and get patched.

At this point, that would be a waste of money and materials. UP only patches units that they intend to keep on their roster for a long period of time. With all of the storing going on now and the C44-9W lease expiring in 2015, UP just doesn't care that they dont match their roster and would sooner store them than patch them.
And I heard from a reliable source that Omaha has ordered Proviso to store them by may 1st. Whether this is true or not remains a mystery, but this person has very close contact with UP and he rarely is wrong. He said that when they arrive in Proviso on MSSPR, they will make one final run to Council Bluffs on MPRCB, come back on MCBPR, and then head for storage.
I advise all duo chasers to ready your cameras as this may be the last time you ever see them as well as a locomotive with a CNW reporting mark leading a revenue freight train.
Your friendly neighborhood CNW fan.
Just at lunch and heard the Adams Sub dispatch give the CN(w) 8701 a warrant East from Rock to Butler Yard. Sounds like there is some trackwork around mp300-303 right now which may slow her down. I think that is between Mapleton and Merton, but not exactly sure. mp 305 is at Sussex.
It was an after-arrival warrant for UP3566 Westbound - meeting at Rock probably around 12:15 - or so. Warrants were issued around 11:15.
Best of luck to anyone out fanning today. Hope you get to see them!
The CNW twins are headed to Des Moines Iowa the weeekend of 14th thru the 18th of May for the CNWHS annual meet. They head an excirstion from Des Moines to the High Bridge on Friday the 14th I am hoping they will be here in Des Monies for the entire meet Larry
There was talk about trying to get the last two CNWs for the CNW Historical Society's charter train in May. They're going to go from Des Moines to Boone and over the Kate Shelley bridge and, weather permitting, detrain there and talk with Bill Wimmer.
I’m not surprised UP’s putting C44-9W into storage since they’re storing SD70Ms less than 10 years old. I think all of UP’s C44-9Ws are former C&NW and SP. They’re not as common on UP’s roster as some other class 1s. On BNSF and NS C40/44-9Ws are almost everywhere.
CNW 6000 Unless UP decided that they needed bigger power elsewhere. I will take a page from CN: some WC GP40s are being LUGOd and some are leading mainline manifests. Unless someone with direct knowledge of what's going on would chime in I don't think I'm going to read too much into any speculation.

True. I'm actively searching for any additional information on this as well. I'll post any new findings as they come up.
Last sumer,I saw CNW 8646 as the lead unit of an eastbound freight near my home in Whittier,CA.
Others are saying they might come back, but I'm guessing they're on the way to a storage line.
Remember, they spent almost all of 2008 running gradually smaller jobs. Reduced to a yard job at the end of the year and continuing into the beginning of 2009.
For them to suddenly return to manifest service makes little sense...Unless they're headed for storage.
