DeggestyOf course, when you travel in a civilized manner (by train), you may not have room to carry your own pillow(s). We both prefer a firm mattress.
Understand about that Johnny.....We frequent a Hampton Inn over in Pennsylvania area {our home grounds}, when we visit at least once a year and of course we've plenty of room in the car to carry these things.
One other item: We carry a small travel size Lysol disinfectant spray can with us to use on the door handles, TV control, telephone, etc.....in the Hotel room just for a little extra measure of safety.
And yes....really a firm mattress and likewise for the pillow suites me fine.
And we agree with the comments re: Bed spreads.....Pull it off the bed and put it down at the foot end. We stay at the same hotel each time to not be sampling many situations...and we happen to like this place.

Quentin, when it comes to pillows: different folks, different strokes. Ricki likes a flat pillow, and will beat hers down before lying down; Mine is not flat, and I will fluff it up first. I sometimes tell her that I feel sorry for her pillow. When we go up to Snowbird for a week, we take her pillow with us. Paula, thanks for the supper. Ricki wishes that we would stay on one or the other time standard year-round. I say that there was one intelligent state legislature forty-three years ago. Of course, if we all observed time that is no more than one half hour out from local mean sun time, you and Quentin would be in the Central time zone. Get well! (And everybody else who has whatever-it-is, you get well, too!)

We almost saw a "derailment" right in front of us - a gentleman in an SUV going with the green lite at an X crossing and a "woman" ON A CELL PHONE ran the red light and cut right in front of him. Good thing he was observant. She never stopped talking and never slowed down, either! AARRRRGHHHHH

car wash alert! It was about 10 above and what seemed like a 90 mph wind when we went to breakfast out on the prairie, so.... we must be going to have a 95 degree day within a week. Every warm day deserves a bitterly cold day and vice versa.
No trains today - it was too sloppy to get near tracks, so went shopping instead. Ugh. I hate to shop, but some things you really need to go into a store once in awhile.
I figured out how to avoid motel/hotel bedding - spend your vacation $$$ on your car or your furniture. Insures you never have to stay out of town!

In the mid-twenties here this morning, and when the sun came up over the Wsatch, it tried to shine in. It's almost high enough now so that I can open the living room curtains before I go out to walk and it will not shine in on Ricki's face as she watches televison while finishing her breakfast. Of course, eight days from now, we have to be up an hour earlier as we go back to what we call "daylight stupid time." I think of the man whose blanket was not long enough to cover him from head to toe, so he cut a foot off one end and sewed to the other, to make it longer. Why not just admit that some people really want to start work an hour earlier in the morning? To avoid the danger of heart attack and such, we ease into the hour ten minutes a day for six days. And, in the fall, we ease back ten minutes a day.
Modelcar pillow are really important for me to get good rest. I hate those soft sponge rubber pillow in motels....so often take our own with us when staying in one for a few days.

Roy - I have never had any serious health problems, but have found in my life experiences that you always want to have 4 very good items around you. A good chair, a good bed, a good pillow and good shoes.. 99% of all my aches and pains can be corrected with changing one of the above.
Most people with nagging backaches should look at their favorite chairs, first. If your posterior is lower than your knees, you put a strain on your muscles and the sciatica nerve. This happens when chairs get older and your posterier does too. Always wondered why my Grandmother put a fat pillow behind her back. Now I know. And don't favor one side. I have a tendency to sit leaning slightly left - leaning on the left arm. Both the chair and I had problems after a few years.
Neck/head - same thing. Check your pillow. And bed - well if you get up feeling like you have been in an all nite brawl -

Rain and about 50 here in Winston-Salem today with a winter mix tomorrow and Monday with temps in the 25 to 39 degree range. Looks like a sloppy week-end. Good day to stay inside and get rid of what remains of this cold of mine that wants to stay to long. Letting Lynda sleep in a bit and then out for breakfast (or brunch as the case may be).
In short typical for late winter here in the NC Piedmont. But hope is on the horizon with Spring start coming around in about two to three weeks.

Mutt - it came with covers for the arm, so my ever present cough drop can be hidden under there!

Woke up this morning and found out we had no temperature at all - zero.
The home weather station says it got down to -2F. That means a fifty degree change from yesterday afternoon to this morning.
A nice hot breakfast will be good. Then I have to go help a neighboring fire department set up a mail relay that will send dispatch information out to cell phones...
CW , nice to see the ( cafe ) back open agin. For me, the Diner will always be remembered in my mind .It will have the trackside front window of (4 over 6 panes) with the lower left pane cracked from the vibration of a long ago Y6b passing and hittin' the diamond. I hope the top row is still steamed up . It took a while to find this page . This puter has a case of distemper, ( can't send or recieve e mail.) Howdy and good mornin. Thanks for the breakfast, Paula. It hit the spot. At present, 54 degrees and rain and thunder for the next two days. The weather boffins say we may even get a snifter of snow tomorrow night. Jen, we had a La-Z-Boy East plant here until about 5 years ago. It was situated between Seaboard Air Line on the north, and Atlantic Coast Line on the south. SAL was abandoned in 1968 and the ACL line is now SC Central. I noticed the other day that the spur from the south has finally been taken up and the switch is gone. Funny thing tho, they left the rails in the street. Originally, the site was a large sawmill, which had its own steam locomotives and log cars. They logged in the Santee River Swamp, about 45 miles away and pulled in on trackage rights on the ACL Charleston run(now the A Line). My, how times have changed, and not necessarily for the better.Paula, Quentin, Jen and others what's ailing, I hope yall get over the miseries quick. Yall take care and enjoy the weekend.
Good Saturday morning everyone. Quentin and others, hope you're soon well! Guess I may call the doctor next week, if I'm not any better. Staying stuffed up , and sneezing up a storm. Don't seem to have an elevated temp, so that's one good thing.
Coffee, juices, hot chocolate and hot water for tea are ready. On the warmer bar this morning: bagels, bear claws, turkey bacon, sausages, scrambled eggs, and your choice of pancakes or waffles (waffles are cinnamon flavored). Plenty of 100% pure maple syrup to go on the pancakes, waffles, too.

It was on the Grand Rapids & Indiana, 58.8 miles above Richmond. Now, it's on no railraod; the PC abandoned the track from Richmond to Decatur.
High twenties, with light snow this morning and no noticeable wind--almost decent walking weather. Such snow as did stick to the concrete was gone before noon.
Snow in Virginia? Of course! even in the southern part. Many years ago, Ricki's first husband's brother and their cousin lived next door to one another in one of the Washington Virginia suburbs. One day, as they were shoveling snow, the brother remarked to the cousin, "When I retire, I'm going to move to Hawaii." He did.
One perk of age (and retirement) is not having to scrape ice off the windows about seven in the morning. I d o not miss that chore at all.

Tree - time to relocate further south and west. You would thrive here - you are used to really awful weather, so rain to ice shouldn't even be a consideration for you. Truly - our weather (even tho it is snowing right now) has been decent this winter. And since I found out that Virginia area gets snow and cold, you could pretend we are the almost south!
Q - I think you must have gotten a virus. Ours was just sneezing and trying not to let it turn into sinus infection (I talked to Willy and he has a doozy of one!) Ah - age hath its perks - well, for some of us.
