My condolences to the Town of Tehachapi.    We have lost way too much railroad history over the past generation around the USA.   I do look forward to the very happy day when the rebuilt Tehachapi depot is dedicated and opened to the public.

How do you pronounce the name Tehachapi?  I would have thought it to be Spanish sounding: Tay-huh-chap-ee.  Last night, I was at the car races, and a spectator visiting won $360 in the 50-50 drawing.  He said he was from Tay-hatch-uh-pea California.

I like your second pronunciation, although I almost treat the first syllable as "Tuh", or even "T'-".

I was there a little over a year ago--the municipality seems quite in tune with its railroad.  Sorry this had to happen.

It's pronounced like why the chicken was sitting on the little green veggie -- Ta-hatch-a-pea.  Like many US place names, it is the foriegn (Spanish in this case) bastardization of the Indian name, which the Americans further bastardized in both spelling and pronounciation.

Wow. I'm just stunned, too.

My husband and I were out there June 7. We met up with John Roskoski (of the Surf story fame) and he took us out to the Loop. We had lunch at Kelcy's Restaurant, and dinner at The Apple Shed just down the road. This is really heartbreaking.

I'm glad I saw the depot, albeit briefly, but I'm very sad it's gone.

Tehachapi, CA depot burns--Request for aid
Posted by tehachap on Wednesday, June 18, 2008 12:47 PM

Although the building was insured, the damages are estimated at over $1 million and the insurance payment will be for far less than this. I am asking for donations from the public in any amount to help bring this historical landmark back to life. The Friends of the Tehachapi Depot is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization so all donations are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.

Please consider donating. We'd like to have the depot rebuilt in time for the City's Centennial Celebration in August of next year, and will need all the help we can get. Make checks payable to Friends of the Tehachapi Depot and send to: Friends of the Tehachapi Depot, P. O. Box 2044, Tehachapi, CA 93581.

Did you hear...the fire was caused by firecrackers, and the parties responsible have been apprehended.

Boy that has be to awful for the people that were restoring it, it was almost done! The sad thing was they were in the middle of installing a sprinkler system in the building, what a odd thing to happen. That looked like a nice depot too, hopefully it can be restored to look just like it did before the fire.
