Railroads today

  Being out of the USA for many years now I wondered what are the 10 biggest railroads now, what sort of tonnage does each move and are there likely to be any more almalgamations in the near future. Cheers Jeff.

You'll have to go into regional railroads to get 10, the class 1's:

UP

BNSF

NS

CSX

KCS

CN

CP

AMTK

     I'd put the next in line as the bigger regional:

     DM&E/IC&E: Dakota, Minnesota & Eastern / Iowa, Chicago & Eastern

     MRL:  Montana Rail Link

     FEC: Florida East Coast

   Thanks for the replies so far,on reflection the tonnages for the railroads must run to millions so perhaps better to leave that,but would still be interested if any mergers or any railroads that are struggling. Jeff

     I don't know if I'd say any of those mentioned above are struggling.

     I should note, that CP bought DME/ICE, and is waiting for government approval to absorb them into CP (as I understand the situation ).

I don't generate enough revenue to be a class 1.  Waaaaay not enough.  8-)

     Is Amtrak considered a Class 1?  I thought the Class 1 etc.... designation was to describe freight railroads only.

Amtrak is definitely included when naming Class 1 railroads.

Hmmm   So the Class 1 type designation pertains to passenger railroads ( all one of them!) as well as freight railroads.  I did not know that.
