TRAINS's Hometown about to be BURIED
Posted by kschmidt on Tuesday, February 5, 2008 6:39 PM

Greetings,

As I type this the Milwaukee, WI area is preparing for the "White Death" to overtake the city.  The National Weather Service is predicting 14"-20" of snow to fall in the greater Milwaukee area with pockets of higher amounts due to Thundersnow.  Thundersnow storms can drop alot of snow in a short time.

It is snowing in Milwaukee right now and is supposed to really kick in around 9pm with heavy snow and wind blowing from the Northeast, great for Lake Effect snow boosting the depths. The snow isn't supposed to taper off until after 3pm on Wednesday.  If the predictions hold true it could be one of the top 5 24 hours snowfalls in Milwaukee record keeping history.

Thursday could make for some interesting railroad snow removal photos.  I doubt plow trains would have to come out,  but the yards might need some clearing out.   Also hope to get the shot of the locomotive breaking through the snow piled up at a recently plowed grade crossing

Awaiting the "White Death"

Keith

We're supposed to get about a foot around here, they're saying.  Our wet and/or icy stuff hasn't turned to snow just yet.  I hope I make it to work without too much difficulty tomorrow, then I hope my relief can do the same.  Meanwhile, I hope stuff stays on the rail (if the only way to keep things upright is to stop humping, then so be it).

I've already called clients to cancel tomorrow's appointments.  No complaints.  Who in their right mind would want to venture out in a major snow storm just to find out how much they paid for income taxes last year.Banged Head [banghead]Banged Head [banghead]Sigh [sigh]

...Boy Carl, looks like your place is going to be about like the pictures I sent you of our 20 here last Feb. - Mar.

Hope you folks get by ok without much bad stuff happening.  That's a nasty bunch of snow predicted.

It's not bad, actually.  Snow makes things look fresh gives a peaceful feeling while watching it snow.  Shoveling it is another story...but that's what snowblowers are for!

Clear and about 45 in Phoenix right now.  Hopefully I won't fly into the teeth of that mess when I change planes in Detroit tomorrow.  My daughter says the Syracuse airport should be OK, though.

I'd tow a few snow clouds down there Ed, but FORDS are alergic to working. (Lurch wimped out with the ice and measley 5 inches of frizzle we got here...couldn't open the windows at the airport)

MC:  Uh-oh!

So far, nothing has fallen here, but they're still saying we're in for six to ten inches today.

Sitting in the Phoenix airport, waitin' for my plane to board.

Interesting event in Phoenix this morning (at 0h-dark-30) - frost on the windshield.  I guess that passes for winter weather around here.

Looks like I may be headed into a mess back home, though - I can hear another passenger who is apparently headed back via Syracuse talking on the phone - something about the interstate I'll travel home on being closed...

At least I have someplace to stay, and I know the "back" way home, too...

....So far, the word here is all about flooding.  River in Muncie rose 7' yesterday and won't crest until sometime today.  Personally, we're ok on any of that danger....not in any flood plane.  No mention of any ice danger yet...nor snow.

Well they have modified the Milwaukee forecast -- not all that much snow fell last night but now the heavy snow is to continue to 6 pm today -- and they are still talking 12 to 18 inches and very high winds with drifts up to 4 feet high (so maybe those mainline plows will get a workout after all).

Originally it was predicted we could not get to work this morning.  The practical effect of the changed forecast is that we have all been tricked into showing up for work but now it will be impossible to get home tonight!

Temp is just at or below freezing so the water content of the snow is really high.  What I shoveled this morning was not deep but was perhaps the heaviest snow I have ever shoveled.  This could make for some dramatic railroading today.   And on Saturday night the temperatures will hit zero so all this snow will become a solid rock.  Any rail line not cleared out before then could get VERY interesting.

Hopefully the snow will be cleaned up by Friday.  The local chapter of the National Railroad Historical Society in Milwaukee is hosting Trains editor Jim Wrinn and we do not want to miss that.  Fortunately I only live a few blocks away.  Check out the website: http://www.nrhswis.org/meetings.html

Wisconsin Chapter meetings are held on the first Friday of every month (except July & August), at 7:30 p.m., at the North Shore Congregational Church, 7330 N. Santa Monica Boulevard in Fox Point, Wisconsin.

Got to work in Palatine IL only to be told that we're closing down at noon. Banged Head [banghead] Hd no problems getting here in the 4WD Suburban except for the idiots around me, but it isn't getting better.  I heard on the radio that a tanker truck full of chocolate flipped onto its side on the Skyway.  Where's a Mookie when you need one?Dinner [dinner]

All things considered, I'd rather be snowbound and have a day fighting my cold in the warmth of the house than dealing with the deadly storms that went throught the mid-south.

Very bad news with many fatalties.

Well, I made it to work here without any problems, but we have about 6" of snow and it's still falling fast.  Blew the driveway out this morning before I left, and will have to do it again when I get home.

No "new" (i.e. white as opposed to yellow or brown) snow on the ground here in Aurora at this point but "they" are predicting between 8 and 12 inches by tonight.  Our company HQ in Hartford, WI is closing at noon today due to the weather.

We don't have any snow out of the storm yet; only very heavy rain that has changed to drizzle. This is supposed to change back to heavy rain just in time for the trip home during rush hour. Tonight will be a different story. The rain is supposed to change to snow, sleet, and freezing rain by tomorrow morning.

There's supposed to be "little or no accumulation" with this storm, but the last time the weatherman said that we got 10-inches of the heaviest snow I ever shoveled! The rotten part is I live on a hill and my house is down in the valley. My driveway has a 5% grade (no exageration I measured it), and any vehicles caught in the driveway are stuck there until it thaws because they can't make it up the slope. I park on the street, but get plowed in up to my antenna every time the snow plows go by.

Got to love winter up in New England. I feel bad for the people down south with those terrible storms.

Several inches of white slop on the ground at this point.  We had an hour or two of sleet this morning before things changed over.  It didn't cause me any problems at work (my retarder broke for another reason, and my relief was late for another reason).

I hope the slush is cleared off the streets by tomorrow, or it will be there for a while.  Ice would only slightly add to the woes we have from recently-developed potholes of the tire-chomping variety.

Looks like the six to twelve inches predicted here in Aurora will not materialize and we are more likely to get about three or four total...that's OK with me.  As I get older I like snow less and less each year.

We got dumped on up here in Marengo.  Probably 8 inches, but now it seems to just be blowing around more than falling.
