BNSF Train Wreck Augusta Kansas
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, January 12, 2008 11:47 PM

There was a major train wreck just before 6 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 8, 2008 just northeast of Augusta, Kansas.  It is about a mile east of Augusta.  This is on the BNSF main line where there is double track.

One train ran into the back of another train as both were going west.  Then at about the same time a third train going east ran into the first accident.  Two people where hurt but not seriously.  Thirty-nine cars are reported derailed.

This is a link to pictures and story from KSNW-TV, Ch. 3 in Wichita.  They have some pretty good aerial photos and link to video.  http://www.ksn.com/news/local/13731397.html

KAKE-TV, Ch. 10 in Wichita also has a pretty good video report with some pretty good on the scene video and a short printed story.   There is a map at the bottom of their page.   http://www.kake.com/home/headlines/13730297.html

I have not seen very many CSX engines on this line in last several years.  Norfolk Southern is the most common seen, if there are other engines.  BNSF pretty much uses their own engines.  It was common to other engines in years past.  Of course I don't sit by the tracks counting trains.

There is still the usual daily Union Pacific coal train going through Augusta and on south to Red Rock, Oklahoma.   And they make the return trip.

The east bound trailer train involved with the Augusta wreck is sitting on a siding in Augusta.

A train went through Augusta at about 6:45 a.m. followed by another one hour later.

Report said one track would be open by 6 a.m. Sunday.  The second track would be open later on Sunday.

This link is the Wichita Eagle's story Sunday, Page 1B.  There are three pictures that appeared in the newspaper.  Click on the pictures a somewhat better view.

Must we endure this every time there's a wreck on any railroad?

I agree with Carl. It doesn't give a hoot one single bit as to what engs were involved. I could care less. Main thing is that no one was killed or badly hurt. That is what counts.

I will agree with this. I am sure that the favorite railroads of a majority of people here no longer exist. You do not see anyone else here making ridiculous, baseless insults at the railroads that bought our favorite railroads. It seems like there used to be one, but it seems he has finally stopped. Conrail is gone, you are going to have to deal with it.

Let me see if i get the story right. I was running my NS dash-9 junk trying to catch up too the big boy who was pulling away  i was being cheered on by the csx cheer leading crew and being booed by the conrail guys ( no blue engines ) when he suddenly stopped, My last signal was green then came upon a upside down red over red flashing a lunar white backwards so this means turn on the headlights then i saw it a train stopped in front of me. so i apply my independant brakes into emergency and dragged my feet til i stopped and i did stop 5 ft from the rear of that train , when all of a sudden a south bound train came out of nowhere and crashed into my engines and trains ( now are you glad i didnt have any blue engines) and while he was making this mess they blamed me for running to slow and being in the way. I was punished for this by having to spend my next 3 weeks getting ready for bike week in florida then having to go to jamaca and judge a nude beauty contest. and then comming back to work in june. I tried to make them do this with out pay, they said No to that and said i either do this time or go back to work..... I will give you a full report when i get back.
