2 trains across diamond at Rochelle...
Posted by Modelcar on Monday, December 24, 2007 4:51 PM

....Just witnessed 2 trains across the diamond {on UP}, at Rochelle.  I'm sure that's not unique, but believe it's a first for me.

That's nothing.  Wait until you see three at once.  It's a sight to see, that's for sure.
You should see what an SD70ACe does to a dead fish!

Ummmm.....3?

Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but can't only 2 be on the diamond at a time? (I'm assuming this is a 2 track diamond...)

Strictly speaking, that's correct, but I'm sure the reference was to two on the UP and one coming out of the plant to the south-west (Dole? DelMonte?) and hitting the BNSF mainline.  I haven't seen that, but I have seen one on the UP and one coming from the plant at the same time, this being before I was aware of the plant track.  That was a little strange until I figured it out.

...I too have seen a train on that siding located on the southwest side of the diamond.  But it's been several years now.  And no other trains were present when I witnessed the one on that access track.

Yes, two across the diamond is all we better see at one time....And they better be going parallel to each other.

I've seen two trains going east/west on the main with an additional train going west/south on the spur. So that makes a total of 3 trains at once . Of course only 2 can cross the diamond at any one time.

A lot of times you will see two eastbounds side by side going through Rochelle. Usually it happens when there is a eastbound coming out of G3 and another eastbound through train is approaching and a BNSF train gets the diamond and makes them wait. Then the two trains come through side by side. I've seen that BNSF spur to Del Monte that goes along the UP mainline for a short ways used several times this year.
