....Now the temp is dropping here too....Down to 33.8 now. Just an hour or so ago, it was over 35. In fact, I took our automobile over to the car wash this morning to wash off some salt. Glad I got it completed then.

Heard some loud thumping over on the flat-wheel thread that today is the birthday of our unofficial Senior Lounger, Quentin, a.k.a. Modelcar. Congratulations, and best wishes for many more happy, healthy years!
Celebrated out here by getting blocked by two westbound intermodals in Elmhurst--too close to escape between them. Second one was probably The Bird--he was hauling tail-feathers!
Looks like our currently-falling fresh coat of snow will be able to be swept off the walks.

.....Thanks for the kind words Carl. We've had a pretty good day, even though we're receiving a few snow flakes this evening.
Have a good work week.....
Happy Birthday, Quentin! (Sorry I'm a bit late). I hope you had a great one!

....We did fine Chris....Thanks for nice words.
Anybody out and about by the tracks recently?
See anything of interest?

I caught what might be the first of this year's locomotive order from GE: UP GEVOs 7802, 7804, 7805, and 7806. We're supposed to get 125 of them, I think.
Still no sign here of Chad Thomas' SD9s for the Modoc Northern. I'm watching, though!
In the mail today, I got a very interesting newspaper article from the Omaha World-Herald published a couple of Sundays ago. Way to go, Willy! Nice picture, too--we'd let you do our shoveling!

Thanks, Carl! I'd actually be more than happy to do some shoveling for you, since there really hasn't been very much to shovel here in Omaha this winter. It's been cold, but not snowy.
Anyway, I was thrilled to be chosen as one of the six "Whiz Kids" featured in the article. Plus, it gave my website a nice boost in popularity.
School has been keeping me busy. I just handed in my second semester term paper today. The title of my paper was: "America's Entrance Into World War I: British Propaganda, American Interests in the Allied Nations, and German Submarine Warfare" It was certainly an interesting topic to write about and I think I'll get a good grade.
Still have a test to study for this evening, so I better get to it.

Its supposed to storm here part of this weekend...but that should not prevent my going out in search of UP activity.

No and no. Unfortunately.
Our local co-gen got some coal in, but it looks like they might have a problem with it being frozen in the cars, 'cause it's not unloaded yet and that's not like them.

Carl --
Where does UP use the jet engine snow melter I've seen parked at Rochelle? Yards?
PZ: I would assume they use that thing in Global 3, though theoretically it might be able to polish some well-known diamonds as well. I don't know whether it would be used on mainline switches, assuming that they would have the same problems we have had in the yard.
Willy: That's one topic?!
The new GEVOs took a trip to Rochelle today; don't know where they'll go from there.
Just saw the announcement on another thread--my birthday buddy from upstate New York has a new granddaughter!
Congratulations, Larry--and watch out...those grandkids could be habit-forming! Sorry she's so far away from you (our two granddaughters, and a grandson due in June, are less than an hour away under nearly all traffic conditions).
Carl, I saw these same four brand new units going westbound at West Chicago at about Noon the day after you saw them. I noted how they were in the same number series and were sparkly clean (being new, no shock there). Wonder how long they will stay clean?
After their trip to Rochelle, the four new units went out to Long Beach. Plenty of opportunity to acquire a patina of dust and grime. I haven't seen any others yet, but have been assured that more are headed our way.
Meanwhile, I've heard a rumor of some new six-axle genset (hybrid) units headed our way, which I might be able to observe up close, if not personal. They're intended for service further west, but we might get a chance to put them through their paces first.
Hey all,
If you get a chance, stop by The Online Photographer and check out this post, especially the "Featured Comment" for the entry.
We've now had at least a dozen of the new 7800-series locomotives in town. They have, for the most part, headed west on intermodal trains.
As for the genset, UPY 896 arrived at Proviso yesterday. So far, the railroad doesn't seem to know what it has here; the spec page shows it as a four-axle unit, which it clearly ain't. I would assume that UPY 897 through 899 will be following soon.

Thanks, Carl! I actually skipped lunch and used my whole break typing that one out, so you can imagine how honored I was when I saw that Mike featured my efforts!
Very true Carl. Nice commentary Chris.

Thanks, Dan!
my hunt to track down and photograph the last days of the SD40-2s continues on in these shots:
3035 and 3051 have returned again, this time with 803 in tow and headed the other direction. It's always nice to hear trains on the jointed rail around here.
later at night, i heard word that UP 3054 was inbound my way. I needed that unit yet, so I used 8701 as an excuse to go catch it.
Your friendly neighborhood CNW fan.
Having visited this site numerous times just for a peek. Iwould like to say I enjoy the photgraphy and having taken 35 mm and super 8 some years ago I believe it is time for me to take a look at the new fangled digital photography.
I am going to buy me a new Canon Rebel for a start and go from their. Just have to wait until tax season ends and I have time to visit the Camera Store and buy the necessary equipment. Many years ago I enjoyed Rail photgraphy and feel I need an outlet once again I can do at my leisure. Seeing the excellent work at trackside lounge has convinced me to get to it after April 15, 2008.
Wife is worried this will creat another monster as I have a tendency to go all out on hobbies. She has already advised me don't expect her to go along to Donner in the winter? Does that mean I will have to find someone else for winter trips. By the time tax season is over their is not much winter left even on Donner.
