Hey, you never can tell...perhaps I will get on the case of the inebriated guy who drove onto the BNFS tracks near Downers Grove last week and was pulled from his car just in time to save him...stay tuned.

That was a wild one! The dash cam video from the squad car was amazingly horrific and incredible at the same time. Just glad that no one was killed or severely injured. I'm sure the engineers are still a bit shaken over it though. Hope he gets the book thrown at him, but that's rarely how it ever happens isn't it.
Is there thunder and ligtning down your way today too? I love a good winter thunderstorm.
Mike
Emma, I'm going to have to change my mental image of you--you're obviously very tall, to get that roof shot!
Congratulations on having that great shot accepted--you've now done something that I'm highly unlikely ever to do.
Jim, I had a jury stint many years ago, back in the old courthouse. It was a DUI case, and we convicted him (or allowed him to convict himself). I think if you got the Hinsdale incident, you'd have to work pretty hard to conceal your feelings if you wanted to serve on the jury--defense attorney would probably reject you quickly for not being impartial enough.
Still recovering from a session with the snow shovel--we got a couple of inches of very wet snow overnight. Driveway is clear, sidewalk is ahem! open, anyway. Pat and I also did our neighbor's walk, as we often do (they're more elderly than we).

Carl-
I fell your pain. Literally. The snow thrower burnt up a belt Friday morning so the shovel has gotten a lot of extra work. My arms will attest to it!
Mike, no, we have not had any thunder storms here yet but I heard about some out on the Miss. river near Iowa while driving here this morning.
Carl, I also had an argument with old man snow this morning. I had my snow blower cranked up at 6:00 a.m. (I bet my neighbors loved me for that one!) and it kept stalling at first due to my taking too big a bite of the really wet snow. Once I began taking smaller bites it went well but took naturally longer.
Carl, you are likely right on...I don't tend to hide my feelings easily as most on this forum will readily attest to. I will call 'em as I see 'em, regardless of whether mine is a popular opinion or not...LET THE CHIPS FALL WHERE THEY FALL.
I am currently cooling my heels in the jury lounge. They have already called twelve of us (randomly mixing the numbers from about 200 of us here this morning), but nothing for about half an hour now. More updates later.

Can't help with your question but wanted to say welcome just the same.
Half, we'll give you a full welcome!
If you have specific questions about track maintenance machinery, just fire away! There are folks lurking out there who will give you good, honest answers if they can.
I think I saw one of those tamper MOW vehicles with an old CNW logo on in in Neenah this morning but didn't have a camera with me.
It'd be nice to see more CNW rolling stock as well.
And if Da Mare salutes you, boy, you stay saluted!
I've had a few encounters with vehicles that this law would criminalize.
Thanks for posting this, Bob! I wish it were biking season about now!

What - No studded snow tires?

Carl,
I think I'm going to try and get in the neighborhood of your yearly totals this year. If all else fails, I'm hoping to bike to CRRM at least a couple times a month. Nothing like a good bike ride with a scenic destination!

I'm actually thinking about buying a tricycle for this summer, Carl -- one of those industrials where you have room to haul camera bags and whatever. Good for trips to the store so I leave the truck in the garage.

Those hurt when you fall...don't ask!
Who says you need snow tires? I have seen quite a few people riding around town in the snow on road bikes! (Needless to say I prefer my mountain bike with a good set of tires or a bmx bike when inthe snow). The lack of control and braking ability are just part of the fun. That and you get stared at more when you are peddling as fast as you can down a hill and then do a moving dismount so you can get your camera out before the train makes it over the bridge. The success of railfanning should always be measured by the amount of stares and strange looks you get.
I think it may be time to start a railfans on bikes club (only the fittest get the picture

I don't know whether to laugh or cry! I've had my shares of injuries (some of which Daley's proposals might have prevented, had I been in Chicago), and done my share of snow biking (delivered papers on my bike in the winter when in junior high). I've also gotten plenty of strange looks while bike-railfanning, including a lecture on why I shouldn't have been biking from Sterling to Lombard in the summer at my age!
home rails or general service, 1995 still never comes to Altoona
with the SD40-2s beginning to die out on the UP, i've become more excited. for a long time i've wanted all that ex-CNW stuff off of UP or far from me. now it seems i finally get my wish.
i hope SD60s or SD70Ms will replace them. or perhaps some C44-9Ws (dont let my duo hate fool you, i like all the other ones)
i've heard another rumor about SD60Ms replacing them. and i hope dearly that it's false. i HATE SD60Ms. i can tolerate the 2-eyed ones i guess, but SD60s are just nicer to me
well the Altoona runs continue, but aren't as numerous thanks to the cold. i've only made 1 more run since my last post. here's the shots:
MVPPR loafing around till the crew comes. check out 1234 there.
i remember when CNW had these....first time i've ever seen one
and for CNW rolling stock, there were 3 nice ones sitting around:
Green hopper
Grey hopper
ex-CRIP hopper

I read somewhere that the units are now free to roam the system, which is why a couple have been seen off-line. However, the D&RGW and CNW units are still pretty much in their home areas (the CNW unit runs regularly between Belvidere and Proviso--usually hitting Proviso at night when nobody sees it). I think the Katy unit was somewhere in the Northwest.
Meanwhile, the two remaining CNW Dash 9s are together again--I think they left town on MPRDM today.
Believe it or not, green CNW covered hoppers are getting pretty rare--most of the series have been returned to leasing companies. Those gray cars (the CNW 190000 series) were being returned long before the UP merger. With the exception of the 490000-series yellow cars and the 180000-series cars (once yellow), the ex-RI cars are actually about the most common former CNW cars left!
The pink cars such as the one in your first photo are on their fifth reporting mark, at least--CNW was their second.

Any CNW cabeese still around?
Poppa_Zit wrote: Carl -- Any CNW cabeese still around?
Pretty sure there are none in service, but I seem to remember Max or Noah reporting on a derelict one somewhere in Wisconsin. I also recall seeing one in Boone, being used as a tourist center or something.
There is a caboose used by the pilot on the American Crane, but it's not one of the traditional bay-window waycars, and it's painted in the non-revenue red-and-gray paint scheme.
