Real Life Fantasy boxcar - WSOR 60th Athearn
Posted by Lyon_Wonder on Wednesday, July 18, 2007 1:41 PM

I thought about posting this in the model railroad forum, but since this is a real-life 1:1 scale rolling stock, I'm posting this here. WSOR has painted a double plug door box #503119 to commemorate Athearn’s 60th anniversary, complete with Athearn logo and slogan.  In this picture from Athearn’s site, this car looks freshly painted, now we’ll have to wait and see how long this paint job remains intact.

Doesn't WSOR also have the MR 50th boxcar too?

Nice! The WSOR people seem like a pretty cool bunch. It must be a decent place to work at. They definitely have pride in their company.

December, 2004...this was in one of the first cut of cars we switched that morning...my engineer and switchman couldn't understand why we hung on to this car the whole day, (because I didn't want to bury it in the middle of the yard, that's why!) till we finished, and I shoved it into a track and tied it down all alone...we tied up, I went to my car and got my camera...and my engineer just about croaked from laughing so much!

He figured it out about half way through the shift, but left our switchman in the dark!

THE WSOR paint crew in Horicon also did the UP's heritage units.   A lot of area railfans regularly check out that paint shop hoping to be the first to catch some rarity.  The WSOR engines as a rule look very sharp and clean in their red and silver paint.  The WSOR company trucks and cars are also beautifully painted red and always look clean and shined up.   Among its other virtues the WSOR is a steam-friendly railroad.  Soo Line 2-8-2 #1003 is housed in a museum building on the line.

The WSOR home page has a high degree of railfan oriented content including photos and historic photos of the predecessor lines.

Some of us employees take a camera to work.  Here are a few of the latest from the paint shop.

It might be diffcult to get the real Box Cars together, but the models can be coupled together.

Think about it. Model Railroader and Athearn help propel each other. Athearn earns income when it advertises in Model Railroader and Model Railroader earns income from having Athearn as an advertiser. That is a beneficial relationship.

Yeah, Andrew, your likely right.

But I can try!

If they both show up down here together, bet your shorts on it...one of our trainmasters is a closet modeler, he just scratch built a HO scale version on the MKT boxcar they converted to a track test car...and trust me, he got it down to the last little detail, even manager to photo etch a pair of the rear side view mirrors and a set of the venetian blinds exactly like the prototype's.

If these two boxes show up here, he will order me to put them together, just so he and I can photograph them!

Unless they have changed since I last looked a long time ago, car service rules require that cars be returned loaded or empty toward the owning road.  That makes the best chance of the two cars showing up together to be on the WSOR.  Not that the WSOR should make a special effort to get them together as, after all, they are out there  to get loaded and make money for the company.  But, if they wind up at the same WSOR yard or station maybe it could be made a photo op.

If it is Janesville and I have a little notice, I'll do the honors.  WSOR would get first dibs on the pictures.

Usually the empty RBLs just pass through Janesville. They collect up in Horicon. When they come up, they get inspected, to make sure the bulkheads are in place, doors work, clean inside, etc. They then get marked up as "OK" and are then in the general pool, shipped out as needed by the canning plants.

I didn't realize that they were RBL's, but now understand that Horicon would be the logical "home" terminal for their service for canned goods.
