UP 3300...NOT RETIRED
Posted by bnsfkline on Thursday, June 28, 2007 1:41 PM

Who ever said that the 3300 was retired was a lier trying to start some stuff up with everyone.

UP 3300 is currently lined up on MASPR for either today or tommarow....and hopefully she will be in the lead!

Are you sure its not being boxcar'd?

And btw, your signature about the church is one of the dumbest and uninformed things I have ever heard.

Wait a minute....

YOU were the one who told us it was being retired!

I noticed that too Max.

BTW- Jim, going to church does not make you a Christian, Accepting Jesus Christ as your savior makes you a Christian. But this is not the place for that discussion so that's all I'm going to say.

Someone on another site decided to post that it was up for auction, but I have learned this isn't true and that part was all a rumor. The part about it being retired is true. It actually was "retired" from May 29th until 5PM yesterday (6/27), but it was not actually retired from the roster. How is this possible? I have learned UP sometimes will put a engine as retired just because they don't want to list all the things that is wrong with it, or just don't want people to know what is wrong with it. This was indeed the case with 3300. It was reactivated to the roster and un-retired yesterday at 5PM and sent from Metro-East Industries at Valley Junction. It is scheduled to be third out on MASPR. It could still lead as this could also be a rumor.

My rumor board shows it as the third unit on today's train, which should be departing Valley Junction just about as we speak.

As someone said, this unit has been a regular visitor to Proviso.  The paint job looks worse the closer you get to it.  Were the unit to be retired, I wouldn't be surprised.  I would expect that UP, as a supporter of the United Way, might produce a newer replacement.

With the thread about the unit being retired, I think we've all had a lesson in the true meaning of infamy.

I think we have all learned that lession and to never believe any rumor until you see the actual results occur and wait until all the possibilities of what can happen are looked at. Lets not have these forums turn into rumor boards! I am now hearing more rumors about 3300 that it could get updated United Way decals in the near future, but I'm not believing this rumor until I actually see it happen! Wink [;)] I have also heard the rumors of it being third out on MASPR. That is one rumor I don't want to be true, it belongs in the lead! Smile [:)]

I don't pay that much attention to who posts what, so when I read this and looked at the other thread I thought "Yeah, that sounds like something Jim would do!"

Then I saw that it was you who posted this.

No, Jim did not start this. Does MEI do painting on specialized paint schemes? I would think if 3300 was getting updated paint it would be done at Jenks or by WSOR in Horicon. You never know, 3300 could've gotten new decals while at MEI. There have been a lot of rumors that 3300 is going to be getting new decals soon, but I don't know if this is true. I am still hearing rumors, despite the fact that 3300 as un-retired yesterday, that UP is selling 3300 to MEI. I already know that rumor is not true. Is it departing Valley Junction today or tommorow? I heard it will be 3rd out tommorow, but I might have the dates mixed up.

3300 heading to Proviso soon
Posted by EJE818 on Thursday, June 28, 2007 5:05 PM
As 3300 heads back to Proviso, Proviso is at it again with specially painted engines, so 3300 is going there at a good time! Once again they have put a specially painted engine (UP 2001) and a unpatched CNW engine (CNW 8701) together! You never know, there could be another trio coming once 3300 gets to Proviso. 8701 is currently the lead engine with 2001 trailing. Lets hope 3300 can join them.

It is, in fact, moving in the right direction tonight.  I hope to see it tomorrow noon, or thereabouts.

Good, lets get it with the 2001. It would be nice if 2002 could make it to make the "Blue Man Group trio" again, but that probably won't happen. It would also be nice if it was put on the lead of MPRDM. It seems to be on that train a lot.

If UP ever plans on retiring that SD40-2, they could always repaint one their newer SD70M's or SD70ACe's in United Way Colors.

UP 3300 still going and heading to Proviso
Posted by EJE818 on Friday, June 29, 2007 1:04 PM
It actually would be pretty neat seeing a SD70ACe in United Way colors. I'm not saying I want 3300 to be retired, but it would look neat. For anyone interested, 3300 should be arriving (if it hasn't arrived already) Proviso sometime this afternoon. It is not the lead engine, however, plus CNW 8646 will be coming in on MCBPR tommorow. There is also a possiblity 3300 will be departing Proviso tommorow. I don't know if it would head on the Geneva Subdivision, back down to Valley Junction, or north to Wisconsin and Minnesota. I will try to find that out and then I will post what will be going on tommorow with 3300 if I think it is a fact and not a rumor. I may head out and see it if it leads down the Geneva Subdivision heading west or the old MoPac line to Valley Junction. It would be nice if it went west on the Geneva Subdivision because of CNW 8646 coming into Proviso tommorow (current scheduled arrival for 8646 is 1 PM). I am not sure if 8646 is leading but I will try to find that out. Could possibly be a good day for the Geneva Sub tommorow if 3300 and 8646 were to both run down it, but 3300 may head north or south also.

So the UP likes to retire, then un-retire engines? Did I get that straight? Maybe they should do something like baseball and put the engines on a disabled list when they're not working properly. Broken crankshaft = sore crankshaft, etc.

The post on Loconotes was 100% correct.

I personally saw the note in the UP computer about UP 3300 being retired and scheduled for auction. Somebody changed their mind and UP 3300 appears to be active again.

UP is having a locomotive auction on July 20 in St. Louis. This is the auction 3300 was supposed to be sold at.

J, it appears that 3300's supposed to leave tomorrow on MPRCB.  I don't think it's arrived yet today, though--that might be a short turn for a unit with all of its alleged problems!

UP 2001 and CNW 8701 are working on ABEBE (saw 'em this morning!); it wouldn't be too hard to get them off that assignment, I suspect.

Cannot recall just what yr it was but back in the 90's, the 3300 actually was assigned for a very short period of time (perhaps a wk) on the LWE 52&53 local in KS.Never did snap a shot of it as both directions through town, the local was a night job.

UP auction at MEI plus update on 3300
Posted by EJE818 on Friday, June 29, 2007 7:34 PM
Ok, I didn't know that they were actually having a auction. It just would seem strange UP would sell 3300. It has CNW style cab signals allowing it to lead down CNW territory. Only 3 other snoots have these cab signals. I have heard 3300 probably won't lead tommorow. It is still planned to be behind 2 UP SD40-2s on I believe MPRCB. MPRCB has been detouring down the IC&E sometimes, but not always, the past few weeks, so anyone interested in seeing 3300 tommorow be aware there is a possibility of that tommorow. I have also heard 8646 is third engine on MCBPR tommrow. Oh well, I will just go another time when 3300 is leading
