BNSF/Burlington Northern Santa Fe name change questions.
Posted by Murphy Siding on Saturday, April 1, 2006 3:56 PM
On the Trains newswire, it talks briefly about about BNSF changing their name *back* to Burlington Norther Santa Fe Railroad. What's up with that? Just because some marketing group thought it would sound more "marketable"? Who thinks this stuff up? I would think they have just flushed a lot of money down the drain! Does anybody know where to find the sneak preview pictures mentioned, of the so-called "Cascade green-inspired", new *proposed* paint scheme?[:0] What would this be called? Something like Heritage 14?Wink My guess is that the "swoosh" will be gone, among other thins. Anybody else have info on this?

In a word-yes. You, I, and BNSF all seem to be confused on this. Weird huh?[xx(]

Ya gotta love marketers and consultants. It was their ilk that convinced the
Great Northern Railway to abandon their all-time classic color scheme
in favor of a blue/gray/white mess. Only shows the idiocy hasn't left yet.

It is April 1, did I miss something? They just changed it to BNSF coinciding with the new paint scheme, didn't they?

IIRC it has always been Burlington Northern Santa Fe post-merger. BNSF fits better on the long hoods than the full name.

I agree 100%. The funny thing is, here all they'd have to do is touch up the paint on the locomotives used locally. Most are still *somewhat* Cascade green-under all the grime.[;)]

Honest truth: I'm not smart enough to link things. It took me 6 months, and a lot of coaching, to figure out how to quote someone else's post.[sigh]

"BNSF Railway" has been the railroad's official name for over a year. BNSF Railway is owned by the "Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corp." which has kept the same name post-merger.

There is an old saying that applied here, and it goes something like..."THOSE WHO CAN DO, THOSE WHO CAN'T CONSULT".

And then there is another old saying: "You can fool some of the people all of the time and all the people some of the time, but you can't fool all the people all the time."

Happy day after April 1st.

Raises the interesting image of a couple of guys with John Budd cornered in his office while they "convince him" against his better judgment to change the colors.

This idea that the consultants are so shrewd and manipulative and the railroad management so passive on important issues is just baloney.

Usually the company makes a decision. Then they hire the consultants. These people aren't just hanging around convincing railroad companies to do things.

Well, it's probably going to change to "B-NS-F" ,black and white, after the merger, anyhow.

With the current state of the world economy,  I don't forsee that happening anytime soon.  Besides, I doubt the regulators would allow it.

Was already tried - in 1999 by Rob Krebs (BNSF) and Paul Tellier (CN) - both gone now.  STB imposed an 18-month moratorium to study major mergers - after unsuccessful appeals to courts to lift moratorium, merger application was withdrawn.  Principal issue was how to fit that long name on the side of all freight cars, esp. flats. - remains unresolved to this day.  Sigh

Keep in mind that Newswire is a media outlet. We all know how the media likes to create attention. Just because it was reported does not mean the facts are for real.
