I'm looking forward to an open discussion of how, exactly, the original 'forum thread' came to be published, and who exactly (by name) changed the article name to 'railroading in 2040' for the magazine.  It is they, more than Jim Wrinn, who need to apologize and prove repentance.

I hope that you said that in jest.  It's hard to tell in print.  Maybe it got upstaged by KCS and other stories more important and just kept getting pushed back.

A retraction that takes up maybe 3 to 4 column inches... 'pushed back'?  I don't 'buy' any such thing, and neither should you.  As I recall, it was Kalmbach management that committed both to making the 'statement' and providing the date it would appear.  I had actually 'moved on' thinking it had been made in the January or February issue as promised.

The point remains that the issue could have been easily addressed in a number of fair and upright ways, and was not.  I am withholding further comment until I see the actual text of what Kalmbach provides.

Plagiarism, inspiration, or whatever, I'm still disappointed that this story resulted in Northwest leaving the forums.  He started and contributed to some pretty interesting threads over the years.

I couldn't agree more.

And as I recall, he was up front about acknowledging Don's inspiration right in the original post... and had he not done so I wouldn't have drawn much similarity between the two, certainly not 'plagiarism'.

It was the subsequent events that were increasingly reprehensible.  Very early Northwest asked Don to PM to discuss the situation... which should have addressed it just as promptly and fairly as Northwest indicated he wanted to.   And then the original post disappeared, and Don was left unsatisfied, and here we sit half a year later still waiting for Kalmbach to explain how this came to be.

Frankly I'd welcome Northwest back whether or not he explained 'in public' what the mystery was about. I don't think he is the trouble here.

Same here.  Unfortunately I doubt he'll read this.

Best he learn his lesson on a railfan publication than in a more academic/professional setting.

And I really doubt Kalmbach is going to come here and offer an explanation.

It's been fun.  But it isn't much fun anymore.   Signing off for now.

Neither do I.  Here or in the magazine.  And I think that's really part of what keeps eating me about it.  I started reading Trains in the early '60s and I can't imagine the magazine of DPM and Rosemary behaving this way.

Since you said that you assumed that it would be in the Jan or Feb issue but didn't say whether you saw it or not, does that mean that you're not a subscriber?

Looked for it in January, didn't see it, was going to post but someone else mentioned it was delayed.  Lost interest and didn't look Feb to present; I figured if someone observed it they would post.  I saw a note a week or so ago that it was going to be in the upcoming issue, but was going to check tonight.

I'm not a subscriber any more.  But I'll buy an issue in the Kroger if it's worth keeping for study.

Just as I thought.  You're not even a subscriber and yet you think that Kalmbach owes you something?

I think they owe me -- and everyone else in this community that cared about the matter -- decency and honesty, yes.  I think they should explain why they overtly abetted a sense of plagiarism without apparent shame, yes.  I'd like to know which factions in the company structure were responsible for the way this was 'played', yes.

As I noted, I'm not expecting anything from that sort of people, let alone that they 'owe me something'.

You're having delusions of adequacy.

I have no delusions where Kalmbach is concerned.

And it is certainly not your place to judge adequacy.

Is there any evidence that Trains knew the article was plagiarized?

Still in training.

I'm glad you brought this up.  Kalmbach apparently will do nothing.  It and Northwest engaged in questionable practices.  Some on here miss Northwest?  I for one miss Don Oltmann's observations but would hardly blame him for wanting little to do with an unethical organization.

Now that you mention it, a tall glass of red birch beer would make a delightful break!

Yes.  I regret getting my nose out of joint over this caused Northwest to leave the forum.

Correct.  I totally missed his PM until it was way too late.  He tried to do the right thing at the start.

Absolutely  true,  even on an informal though commercial website, the lesson needed reinforcement.
