NDG- Very enjoyable and a great read...have saved this to my library.

What a lot of information on the Hudson Bay line as being built and the first shipping season ever.

First case unloaded in England is Canadian Whiskey. Go fiqure.

Reading the accounts of the railway construction crews in tents during the winter and using dog teams for transport....whilst fighting off wolf packs and polar bears stealing their provisions...holy smokes!

1933 first ships in. Record levels of shipping each year after that. Port open six months with icebreakers. Steam powered ballast equipment keeping the track straight, dry and open.

What on earth is the problem today? What a bunch of visionless whiners we have become.

Of course we also must get a bazillion dollars for our bazillion dollaraire owners who couldn't be bothered with just millions anymore.

We could do this soooo much easier and comfortably...and safer, than those guys ever could and all they do is complain, say we can't and let it rot.

Good friggin grief. I'm going outside to give my head a shake.

Back in the fifties, I saw a Southern car which hadbeen repainted to resemble, at distance, a lightweight car. Close up, it was an ugly thing.

Yeah, but the Silverliners were cool.  I hate linking to Facebook, but here is a picture showing a detail of the added siding, which to contemporary eyes is a bit bus-like but at the time would have been quite modern enough.

Electroliners and some other cars got the shadow-lining, which was cool in a different way.  Even relatively close up it looked 'the way it should', at least in my opinion.

Electroliner, showing the striping:

Silverliners: the lead combine with full shadow striping, 2nd car only on the end.

The above picture disappeared last night from my original posting Mar. 31.

3rd time this has happened to me that a photo disappears after a few days In one of my postings.

So..can anyone go back and delete a photo? Not good.

I do not want to try to "edit" anyone's postings, but if you can do this then that's not good at all.

Otherwise, why do they disappear. Freaking me out.

I think that happened to RME also.  Maybe the source of the photo?  If some reuse restrictions apply, maybe the moderators delete?

Schlimm- Well I hope that's the reason. The only time I've seen a request not to copy not paste is from the Canada Southern.com site.

Certainly hope it's not someone playing mischief with edit.

I think this was the shadow-line picture I linked from Wikipedia, and to my knowledge there is no DMCC issue with those images or any TOS policy against hotlinking.

To the extent this is a moderation issue, I suggest that the alternative, if for any reason a picture or video "has" to be deleted from a post, is to substitute a clickable URL (using the little 'chain' tool's code conventions) in its place.  To my knowledge there is not, and should not be, any copyright restriction on merely providing a link to an Internet page, or content on that page, that has not been marked as proprietary.

There are restrictions of many kinds that should produce a takedown of hotlinked images -- any link, for example, to much of the content in the T1 Trust 'repository' would constitute a violation of the understanding with which that material was allowed to be accessed there.  However, I think that if any image were deleted from a post here for such a reason, a moderator would PM or e-mail the poster in question and make them aware of the specific concern.

I've seen cases where a site won't allow hot-linking, no matter how you code the link.  Sometimes you'll get an error message, sometimes not.  Viewing the image is just fine - even copying the URL and opening it in a new window, but you can't link it.

I've been known to link an image and not check it, only to get into a thread later and discover no image in sight.

The particular photo in question went up Friday night. I always check. It disappeared Sunday afternoon. In between I copied the posting and emailed it to my self, my daughter and a retired friend. My Email still has the picture, as do the others.

I would like to think RME is right in that if the moderator took it down they would send you a notice about that.

Is it possible the picture is somehow "unstable" when posted on this site. Like I stated it has happened before. One time after checking it disappeared in about half an hour. The other time after a couple of days.

Gremlins. Will ask my IT department guys Monday...they are a bunch of nerds.

Thanks guys for your input.

About in the middle of the linked article is a 1:50 video clip, about 1:30 of which is an explanation and demo of the CP simulator to the reporter.

AFAIK, editing is restricted only to the poster or moderators.

To avoid linking issues, try copying the image and pasting.

In a number of cases in the past, I have hot linked a picture to a web forum from a site I have permission to view - and I think everything is fine.  Other poster then comment they can't see it; I review the post and may or may not see the image - in many cases I will see a message 'do not hot link our site'.  If you REALLY want to display the image, there are more options than hot linking from that site.

Won't work.  The Kalmbach sites don't host images (aside from your avatar).

With all the usual caveats about copyrights, etc, one effective way to post images is to either put them on a photo site that does allow hot linking, or, if you want to post a lot of them, maybe set up your own website.  Some personal websites are free, some cost a little money.

I did that for a long time, then after confusion over who to pay for what (I still own two domains, but have no place to host them), I let them go.

I've linked off FB, too.

Well, the images I posted above on Sunday (CNS&M and assorted shadow striped hvywts) were copied and pasted.  One was from RMC, and Kalmbach accepted that.  They have survived thus far.

They're still linked from an outside site.  When I click on them, they open up in a new window, with the URL of the site you got them from.

My comment was simply saying the images posted that way are still there, not removed or edited. So perhaps that method avoids the problems others have encountered, i.e., it works, even if Kalmbach does not host images.

Well, the images I posted above on Sunday (CNS&M and assorted shadow striped hvywts) were copied and pasted.

The technical issue here is precisely WHAT you copied and pasted.

What I suspect is that you copied the URL for the picture (rather than for a site or page) and then pasted that into the 'image' tool's fields appropriately.  That is not a 'hosting' issue; you're still linking to content, but directly to an individual image's resource locator.

The 'hosting' issue would arise if you had, say, right-clicked on the image and "saved it" as something either on a site or to some form of local or distributed storage as an image file (for example, a filename ending in one of the reserved image format extensions like .jpg or .png).  Those are the kind of files that I don't think Kalmbach hosts or uses directly when you try to provide them in a post.

RS2 Pilot!

A committee type compromise. Transportation Board requirenment for pilot to deflect debris way from under the locomotive and collective bargaining agreement for footboards extending across the locomotive.

Very early CPR paint scheme. Algoma Division.

Side view showing paint scheme as factory applied. Apr. 1950.

Only 5 RS2's ever on CPR roster.

Hoses attached to regulators center of locomotive and handrails are apparently air operated sanders. Early version!

Minor correction, but CPR actually had 9 RS-2s.  8400-8404 were built by ALCO for service on Newport (Vermont) Division and also for local service on the "Short Line" across Maine (usually the 8404).  Originally they had steam generators but lost them quite early.  They were oddities in that they were not equipped with MU. The group were among the very last 244-engined locomotives on the CPR, still based in Newport.

8405-8408 were the second group, built by MLW, and initially assigned to Chapleau in northern Ontario.  They were equipped with MU capability from the start.

I believe this article has an explanation of all the hoses, including the early air-operated sanders when MU'ed:

Algoma Division 1956...4 Diesels in view, steam out on the road or gone?

Roundhouse doors have been "daylighted". Still a nice scene.

Fast forward 17 years...not a nice scene at all. What the heck happened?

So the good old-old days were what we thought, but the good old days not so much.
