2816 Schedule Aug. 29 - 30
Posted by ErikWP on Tuesday, August 28, 2007 12:40 PM

Does anyone know the schedule (departure/arrrival) for the CP Royal Hudson ferry move from Minneapolis to Milwaukee on Aug. 29 and from Milwaukee to Chicago Union Station on Aug. 30?

Thanks!

I do know the schedule for the Sat., Sun., and Mon. round-trips.

Dep: Franklin Park, 10 a.m. - Arr: Sturtevant, Noon
Dep: Sturtevant, 1:30 p.m. - Arr: Franklin Park, 4 p.m.

They would likely use the new Sturtevant station for the "trackside" lunch.  The train must turn on the wye at the old station using the west leg.  There's not much left at the old boarded up station and there are no facilities.

Does anybody know if they have a planned servicing stop somewhere along the way on the Ferry move on the 29, or are they planning on going straight through to Milwaukee? Any scheduled times for intermediate stops too, or is the only schedule the one already posted?

Thanks In Advance,

Noah

I'm not exactly sure if they will be making any servicing stops. I know they did last year with the 261 at Wisconsin Dells when it was being moved from Minneapolis to Milwaukee. It doesn't say they are making any stops on their Minneapolis to Milwaukee trip on 261's website. I am thinking it is possible they might run the entire line without a stop, but you never know. Schedules can change very quickly on these steam excursions.

The 261 ran as an Amtrak extra (I saw the offical schedule, they were symboled something like Amtrak 992 or something), so they were required to stop at every Amtrak station on the ferry move. As far as I know the 2816 is running as a regular CP train though, so I wasn't sure if they'll be making stops for water somewhere or anything.

2816 Trip
Posted by ErikWP on Wednesday, August 29, 2007 10:55 AM

I guess this depends on whether they are running with an Amtrak "toaster" or a CP unit.  We'll have to get the reports from today's movement.  Aug. 30 is to Chicago Union Station but the Sept. 1-3 trips are mostly on the CP with a brief trip over the Milwaukee District North Line from Tower A-20 (Techny Rd.) to Rondout and then back on the CP.

Went out after the trip today. Sure was nice to see him running along. He did make a water stop at Portage, but otherwise it was a straight through run. He had a CP diesel and a couple of boxcars with generators in them for HEP.

He was darn hard to chase, as he was moving right along, but I got a few different shots. He was running a little bit ahead of schedule and is said to have departed Portage around 5pm.

The train did not go in to Chicago Union Station via the Milwaukee District North Line today but rather diverted onto the CP at Tower A-20 and on to CUS via Bensenville.

I am really looking forward to riding behind it Saturday. I'll be getting lots of pics, believe me. I've never been on a long steam excursion like this, but there really hasn't been any opportunities since 261 came down here from Minneapolis in 2004 to run down the racetrack. Should be a great steam filled Labor Day weekend in Chicago, but don't forget there will be a doubleheader (2816 and 261) from Minneapolis to La Crosse in the not too distant future. I'm satisfied with having one steam engine, but still, that is going to be one heck of a show in Minnesota and Wisconsin. If you are in Minneapolis/St. Paul or La Crosse, or any point in between, mark September 15th on your calendar as this promises to be one heck of a event. I'd go up there and see them, but unless some miracle happened, that won't be happening. The 2816 should be at Bensenville tommorow laying over but most of the yard is inaccesable unless it is sitting along Franklin Avenue. Now, someone asked about details of the return trip. Here they are, 2816 is scheduled to depart Chicago September 4th for Minneapolis, but it will be making a layover in Milwaukee, so on September 5th it will be running between Milwaukee and Minneapolis. I don't have any exact times but maybe someone else could provide those. One note though, when it says Chicago I don't know if that would be Bensenville, Franklin Park, or CUS.

I'm heading to the River on the 15th to take photos around Winona, and I'm looking forward to it. It promises to be a good event. I didn't see the one in 2004, so this'll be my first main line doubleheader.

I see that in the 8/30 news article they indicate the overnite stop on the 4th in LaCrosse. Did the plans change?

So far as I know that was always the plan. The fourth from Chicago to La Crosse, and the fifth up the Mississippi River from La Crosse to Minneapolis. They laid over in Milwaukee on the way down. If you read under the "September 1, 2, 3" paragraph on the 261 website, it talks about the deadhead move home and says the layover will be in La Crosse.

Does anyone know the schedule of the doubleheader? We're planning on pacing the 2816 & 261 along the mississippi river.(Or at least trying to)

Yes I meant La Crosse, not Milwaukee, my mistake.

2816 Report Sept. 1
Posted by ErikWP on Saturday, September 1, 2007 6:08 PM
2816 made it to Sturtevant in juist under 2 hrs. today from Franklin Park.  The passengers detrained at the "old Sturtevant" station, to a picnic ready for them in the former Amtrak parking lot, and the train did a photo run-by  backing up to the previous signal and running passed the station.  Arrival was time just before Noon.  The train kept road times in transit.  Departure on the return was just after 2:00pm necessitating a back up move, after turning on the wye, to the old Sturtevant station "platform" to load passengers.  After that they were moving!

The ride Saturday was great! I also saw the train at Sturtevant yesterday, and I am going out to see it again today. I have point the train will be passing through on the 9th and 15th. On the 9th, it will be departing Shoreham Yard, heading through New Brighton, Osceola, and up to Dresser, MN, then heading back through those same locations back to Shoreham. On the 15th the train will again depart Shoreham but will head through St. Paul past Division Street, Dayton's Bluff, and Pig's Eye and run up the Mississippi to La Crosse, where lunch will be served, then like the trips on the 9th it will head back through the same places it came in through to Shoreham, but 2816 will be doubleheaded with 261 on this trip. I don't have any times for these trips, as they haven't been posted, or much about the locations in that area. I've heard of a few but I've never been up that far north. Others more familar with those areas would probably know better then me.

Nice photos! As a minor point, 2816, a subclass H1b, is not a "Royal Hudson" per se, being built in 1930 and predating the introduction of the semi-streamlined features of later subclass H1c and H1d Hudsons in 1937 and 1938, which featured the royal crown mounted on the running board sheathing above the cylinders on each side, hence the name Royal Hudson.
