Get the 1.6 upgrade (there is a thread here somewhere). I changes the way MSTS handles the graphics and the sounds in memory. Then go look on Train-sim.com in the new files section for some of the new freeware routes. Grab a few new locomotives while you are at it. It just does not compare to the original game. If you are still running the original equipment you need to at the least get the free Dash 9 upgrade from Maple Leaf Tracks. Then get the skin replacements for the original equipment and install those.
I have the old Tehachapi Pass from 3dtrainstuff and just got the scenery upgrade from 3dtrains. The upgrade makes a big difference. Parts of it are now truely amazing. I got the Pentrex Ultimate Tehachapi DVDs and it is amazing how close some of the locations are now.
With the new BIN update for MSTS, the new routes, textures, and sceanry, it's the best sim out there, look for add-ons like x-tracks, new roads, and the new tranparent driving aid on train-sim.com (also check out the forums there for more indformation) these add-ons greatly enhance the MSTS experance. I also have Trainz 2006, and found that it was more of a headache then its worth, just look at thier "offical" forums, and see all the complaints. MSTS has the best camera view options, activities, ease of use, and until Railsimulator comes out http://www.railsimulator.com/en/index.htm (By KUJU the original makers of MSTS) in my opion, if you like driving the virtual rails MSTS is the best option. If you decide to give MSTS with the new updates and need help, feel free to PM me.
