Comparing MSTS vs Trainz?

  • I have MSTS and haven't played it in some while just because the graphics seemed to be lame.  I downloaded Trainz and am not as impressed as I thought I would be by the demo.  Are there some nice third party ad ons for either that make the actual graphics of the scenery, buildings, etc look better?

also i heard trainz also had traffic which you had to contend with at crossings, etc but in the demo i don't think i encounter one town where i'd see traffic.  thanks.

  • You could try MSTS with the Berlin Subway or Line 51 Add On. Both add ons provide you with a new graphic engine for the MSTS.
Especially the Berlin Subway Add On will add hours of gameplay to the MSTS.
The Berlin Subway even runs great on older machines. I tried it with a 800 MHz machine.. and got over 30 frames per second.

Making Tracks has created pretty awesome English Add ons. The texturing is marvelous done and provides a real ambience and english railway feeling... The best one is the "Great Eastern"

  • Get the 1.6 upgrade (there is a thread here somewhere).  I changes the way MSTS handles the graphics and the sounds in memory.  Then go look on Train-sim.com in the new files section for some of the new freeware routes.  Grab a few new locomotives while you are at it.  It just does not compare to the original game.  If you are still running the original equipment you need to at the least get the free Dash 9 upgrade from Maple Leaf Tracks.  Then get the skin replacements for the original equipment and install those.

I have the old Tehachapi Pass from 3dtrainstuff and just got the scenery upgrade from 3dtrains.  The upgrade makes a big difference.  Parts of it are now truely amazing.  I got the Pentrex Ultimate Tehachapi DVDs and it is amazing how close some of the locations are now.

  •  i HAVE msts and it's not very good. I start out with a full BNSF train and after 30 minutes I,m just left with the engine on the outside cab views. Sheeez.
  • I have TRS 2006.  I love it.  Unfortunatly I had to uninstall EVERYTHING this morning do to my computer freezing up.  So I have to start over!  But the grafix and trainz are like the real deal!!
    High horsepower moves me!!!
  • With the new BIN update for MSTS, the new routes, textures, and sceanry, it's the best sim out there, look for add-ons like x-tracks, new roads, and the new tranparent driving aid on train-sim.com (also check out the forums there for more indformation) these add-ons greatly enhance the MSTS experance. I also have Trainz 2006, and found that it was more of a headache then its worth, just look at thier "offical" forums, and see all the complaints.  MSTS has the best camera view options, activities, ease of use, and until Railsimulator comes out http://www.railsimulator.com/en/index.htm  (By KUJU the original makers of MSTS) in my opion, if you like driving the virtual rails MSTS is the best option.  If you decide to give MSTS with the new updates and need help, feel free to PM me.

The train came by and I got on, that’s when it all began
  • MSTS is much simpler to install, and I like simple.
