Hey gregrudd, are you talking about ye ole Deltic's like the one's below :D cool I just rung the bell for another lover of Deltic's. Greg. N.Y.C.
United Kingdom Full size Train Cab simulaterAhhh Thanks for That Sweet Vid.:D of Deltic's days gone by:)
gregrudd : Well said Well Said:D
One of the things that would interest me is has any form of analysis been done between a Deltic and an E9 int erms of running costs, maintainence, failure rates etc. As I would think on an equal playing field an E9 would hold its own against a deltic even though an E9 unit has less hp than a Deltic. When I asked this sort of question on one of the UK groups I had sort of got howled down. You could come to a conclusion that if the UK was built to US loading guage you would have would have to take the E9 design very seriously indeed due to its simplicity and the reliability of the 12 cyl 567 powerplant compared to the deltic in railway service. Remember the Deltic engine is actually a marine engine that mostly wound up in either patrol boats or mine sweepers.
I remember UK based poster on a group saying that an E could not do 100mph untill I told him that a few mid western roads had their E's geared for 110 mph operation and used them at that speed. From what I gather the IC ran their E units at high speeds regularly. Which made them think.
Remember that one of the longest non stop high speed passenger runs made by diesel traction from the early 60's through to 1981 was entrusted to the Deltics. Which was no mean feat. I have often wondered was the complexity of the Deltic worth it
Well another nice Idea you came up with, that would be nice to have info at jsmf for the Series of Deltics and "E" units. and FA's :) For I can say that 1. that the E's are older that me, and 2. I live next to the Long Island RR, and I saw the last Es in Passanger service hear in New York City in 2005, and the Deltic's I do not know the date they were Last in service. But my point is, That the two of them Out lasted Most of all the New Crap that has come out over the Same span of years LOL and I would say the Same Thing for the GG-1's The Day I drove down to Pennselvania the the big yards just off the I-76 by the airport. What I Saw brought Tears to my eyes, row after row of lines of GG-1's, in line for scrap that was soo sad, and You and I know that her replasement did not last long fact is the E-60 on it's first days out of the shops for testing on the NEC Failed time after time cracks on trucks, crack in gears, cracks in main frame. Pantograph problems Truck tracking problems. The list goes on and on , and Don't get me started on the AEM-7's :) Oh I love all the replacments in there own way, it's just that the older units did not have to be retired. Amen:) Oh just for a note, as a kid, to get up in the AM and go Bike Cycling was a blast, for the Yards of the pennsylvania railroad's Sunnyside passanger and engine faculty, standing at a gate atop the yard over looking the fueling docks were rows of GG-1's getting toped off with fuel oil ,water, and sand, winter and summer they burned fuel oil in the steam genarator, to power the AC and other items that used steam on the Heavy weight Pullman coach and parlor cars of the day. Love to see the safty valve pop off every
now and then. :) yeh it made me jump a little , but still wayCool just a few FA's just retired two years ago 2005 and I will also includ the only photo
of the first years of FA's on this road hear, standing next to a G5
Illinois Railway Museum LIRR 604 ALCO FA-2 RIP
LIRR 410 EMD DE30AC The two year old replacements for all power on the road. you got to love em. fast quite , and warm, huggable friend to the engine personal but let me count the days. How long will they last. will the New make room for the old to come back in service til minor problems are fixed, like the NYCsubways, who brought out of retirment hundrieds of 1935 cars back in service til a problem in trucks were fixed :D need i say more lol cheers.
