  • Hey guys it's me again. I know what you guys are thinking, I have another shot of 6005. Well I do. I was ready this morning and caught her/him at Garfield street aghain. There use to be Wig Ways here, but not to long ago CN took them out. I even remember the wig ways here.  Again, I am sorry for so many pictures of 6005. You guys are probably getting sick of seeing pictures of her. Again, I'm sorry.

  • Excellent shots, everybody. I'm not sick of the shots of 6005 at all! It is a rare engine that deserves to have that many photos of it posted.

  • I'm starting to harden myself to all the CN unit retirements...I'm just glad that it hasn't been a railway as dear to my heart as CP that got swallowed...though in a way Fred Green is almost as bad =(

    Luckily, there are still a couple good things about CP! Here are the two best 2816 shots from the last trip. Sad quality-wise....this is after edits!

    Steaming along beside the highway as we try and try to catch up on this fast prairie stretch...and then she stops but we were not informed..so we waited for a couple hours at the next crossing.

    Not as much steam as I would have liked because she shut off the throttle to glide in to stop.

    This is where I changed my film! There is another roll in processing (slide) and a print roll in my camera.

    So today I finished all the paperwork for my job...ugh...now the fun begins. And by fun I mean being able to frivolously spend my money! =D

  • well i did some railfannin my self. up in merrill & wausau.

    the L598 goin through Merrill today was GTW 5930 & IC 6066. i edited these cuz on the first i made the same mistake i did the last time i was here & the 2nd one got a lil late

    now into wausau

    CN 5768 & IC 6126 were todays 408 but once they started making up their train for prentice their L599

    & heres WC 6005

    well tomorrow ill try getting the L531 in town then i  gotta be at the football game at 4:00 to be the mascot again. Go Bulldogs!

    I've seen that one before, and it really is great. Captures the feeling of what little I saw of the DMIR really well. I've seen more of the photos from the guy who put that together, he does great stuff...

    Nice shots too guys. Can't get too much WC, or of the 2816.

    Finally got around to editing my shots from yesterday. First chase was the Ballast train. I arrived at Rock Springs, around 12:30, and the crew was just running around the train in preparation to leave. This is the source of the famous Pink Lady Ballast. While the UP still owns the subdivision, the Wisconsin and Southern operates it and the Ballast train for the UP.

    I didn't stick around to see them leave, as I was meeting a friend in Baraboo to chase the train. He must have left shortly there after though, as it wasn't long before he was blowing for the crossings in Baraboo. We headed to the south shore of Devils Lake State Park for the first set of shots:

    The color peak was slightly passed already around here, but there are still lots of dull oranges and browns in the hills. It's the best shots I've done at Devils Lake thus far though.

    The chase was on. Next up was Okee, Wisconsin for a location that I've wanted to do for quite some time, but that I'd never had to chance to do until now:

    Going up Dane Hill, the ruling grade on the Reedsburg sub (the former CNW main from Madison to Reedsburg Wisconsin. It's still owned by the UP, but operated by regional railroad Wisconsin and Southern), the train was on it's knees and working hard. We managed to shoot him at two locations that were within a mile of each other because he was only going 10 or 15 MPH, and it was a really neat sight to see.

    Our last stop with this train was Dane, where they made a crew change just short of the Wig Wag crossing. There's actually three sets of Wig wags still left on the Reedsburg sub, so there's no shortage of them around here anyway:

    We thought about chasing further, but once you get south of Dane and closer to Madison there aren't as many shots that are of the same quality as those between Baraboo and Dane Hill. We decided to head for Portage, WI and see what was up on the Canadian Pacific main line.

    As we were getting off the interstate, train 486 toned up the dispatcher to get a signal out of the yard, and the dispatcher informed him he'd be meeting a few trains at Wyocena (A siding to the east of Portage). We shot him at Portage East, and were pleasantly surprised to see a NREX unit trailing:

    The CP has leased a bunch of NREX units recently, apparently to fill a power shortage. A lot of them are real odd ball units, and it's making things a little more interesting on the CP because there's finally something around again besides big GE locomotives. I figured the odds of seeing any of the NREX units was fairly small though, but if this day was any indication, they aren't that rare after all. 

    We headed to the east of Wyocena to see if we could find a spot to set up for the train he would be meeting. As we were scouting locations we suddenly saw a headlight rounding the curve, so it was a "ditch the car and run" sort of thing for this shot, of train 185:

    What a consist! This is by far one of the best lash ups I've seen in a long time on the CP. We headed back towards Portage to try and nail him again at Portage Junction, but shadows prevented a good shot (though I did get roster shots of the power). We didn't quite make it ahead of him out of Portage, and he was gone.

    The last shot of the day came just before sunset. Train 199 was hot on the heels of 185, and we headed up to the Wisconsin Dells River Bridge for the last shot of the day:

    You can see by the shadow on the pier that another 15 minutes and the light would have been gone.

    With all of this NREX stuff running around, my interest is peaked again on the CP. Right now they're predicting sun for Sunday, so I might just have to head out again and see what I can find....

    Hopefully I didn't send anybody's internet connection into seizures, and enjoy the photos!

  • Noah, as usual great job taking better shots than I can hope to do until I get a new camera!

    So one of my friends got this funky new lens for her camera that's all, like, bendy and awesome. We were fooling around with it last night and here's one that I got.

  • I might have to try gettng up to the Dells soon since there could be a chance of getting some of these going over the bridge in the morning. Excellent shots everybody! Noah, that is one heck of a consist with the SOO SD60, bandit switch engine and the leasers, and of course I like the one with the CP going over the bridge in the Dells.

  • If you get the chance, check out IRMs webcam and stay on it for a bit. You should be able to see WC 7525 making its first passenger runs at the museum pulling the Terror on the Railroad train until 11 tonight. I just saw it depart the depot on the camera a few minutes ago.

    Noah, nice shots. I just may have to head down to the CP. Maybe Portage or some where along there.

    I just got informed that WC 3023 is getting painted in CN. This really stinks. I wonder what she looks like. Now I just hope the rest of them don't go.

  • Wow, 3023 is getting repainted? That is really a surpirze to me. I also hope the rest of them don't go. With the SD40-2s already leaving sometime next year, it would be too bad if the GP40s started getting repainted.

  • Yeah I know. Pretty soon there will be no WC left, or GTW, or DMIR. Makes me think about the GP38-2s.

  • EJ&E will join the WC and DM&IR next year, and CN seems to be going on a retiring/repainting tirade recently. What a perfect combination, not! CN was more generous for a few months donating two SD45s and temporary halting all of this, but it has seemed to be picking up again lately. I also wonder how long until the WC GP38-2s start getting repainted. CN really hasn't repainted too many GTs or ICs lately, but that really isn't a sirprize since some of the IC SD40-2s could be leaving soon. Funny thing at Homewood is that a former GTW GP9R that is in spotless CN paint is now in the deadline.
