Teen Railfan Place

  • It was cold this morning, I could see my breath around 8:15 still, just the way I like it. As I was letting the dog out to do his thing, I heard the horn of the switcher cut through the morning air, 6005. I was determined to get her today. There still was a chance that she would leave today. So I got my bike, camera, and extra batteries.

I heard her go out to eh yard, and I knew between 7-9 o'clock that they went out to 3M. So I headed to Marathon park, as it was right next to the West yard. But as I was biking up hill I hear the horn. It was close, so I peddled as fast as I could (The tracks where about a block away from me). Now I was in a hurry and I forgot to take the lens cap off. I took it off and click ok on the camera. I wasn't sure if it was 6005 but when I saw the maroon and gold back end I knew it was 6005. I was a bit to close for the first shot. But the second shot I wasn't. Although my camera wasn't fast enough and part of her got in the tree.

Now after the whopping 4-7 car train pasted I kept biking down this street to 3rd ave. I turn to go down to Thomas. Now I was thinking, "Ok, I'll try to get her again on River Drive." When I heard the horn across the river I was like, "Oh man I'll never catch her". Well I was crossing the river and to my amazement she hadn't gone under Thomas yet. I was going down to River drive. But I would of never made it. So I shot for and over head shoot. I was going to go for another one but that didn't turn out so good.

I hope she goes to Graphic Packageing today. I would like to get some roster shots.

  • school was crappy today as usual. but as i headed out, i saw movement behind the trees and ran outside to the railroad crossing to catch a westbound manifest. i wish i had my camera cuz a dash 8 was on the train. but not just any dash 8, a NON-ZOMBIE dash 8! the coolest GEs on the entire UP fleet! and there was a crash 8 leading. may have had nose wings. i thought i saw something blue and white on his nose. couldn't tell.

nice shots of 6005, WCFan. i do wish CN would loan him to the UP as extra power or something so that perhaps i might catch him in Altoona. does he hang around Stevens Point often? i COULD just go there

    Your friendly neighborhood CNW fan.

  • Luck, it's all luck. I'm not sure if she hangs around point. I know nothing really hangs around point but the SW1500s. Stevens Point is only 30 minuates north from here. So it could be a thought. But I don't know if she'll leave today or tommrow, or maybe in the enxt 2 weeks. I just don't know.

  • oh well. i see enough SD40-2s around here as it is. it'd be nice to see ones not in UP paint for once. especially anything that isnt a CNW zombie.

then again, all that mattered to me about WC was the SD45s. i must go after the 7525!

    Your friendly neighborhood CNW fan.

  • If you want to see 7525, you are in luck, as it will be one of the primary engines next year. Crews there seem very impressed with how well it runs. You can always check http://www.irm.org/ and click on any date on the calendar to the right and see what is operating on that day, so you should be able to find out in advance when it is operating. Here is my shot of the NS run-through on the EJ&E.

  • Nice shot EJE. I'm glad that 7525 will be used regular. Makes it that much easer to see her.

Here are some more shots of 6005 at the yard today.

(Sorry for so many pictures today. Just wanted to get some pictures before she leaves.)

  • Nice shots lately guys. If there were more units like the 6005 running around, I might actually head up to the CN a little more often.

Got out to do some railfanning on this absolutely gorgeous fall day in Wisconsin thanks to a teachers convention today and tomorrow (which means no school for me, and I would assume the same for most of the rest of the Wisconsin teens here). Chased a UP ballast train from the quarry at Rock Springs on the WSOR's Reedsburg sub (home of the CNW's famous Pink Lady Ballast), and also shot a few CP trains with some interesting consists. Hopefully photos will follow tomorrow sometime.

  • Another great shot of 6005! I saw DM&IR 416 today on the ready tracks at Homewood, but they moved it into the yard, I assume for the deadline. Two DM&IR SD38-2s have been retired also lately. It is really a shame what is happening on the DM&IR now. 10 DM&IR engines have been retired this year, most of them quite recently.

pretty sure 7525 is a "him"

i kinda figured though that he would see a lot of service for the next year since he's new to the museum.

  • Thanks guys. I hope tommrow I can catch 6005 again. Maybe chase her tommrow like I did today.

Noah, can't wait for the pictures. I do to wish CN had more units like 6005.

EJE. Kinda sad now that DMIR is next up. Make me wonder some more if the same will happen with the EJE.

  • This is a serious situation with the DM&IR. Get your photos of those engines NOW! The ones that aren't being retired are being repainted at a very fast pace. 6005 could very well be gone by this time next year, so get it while you can. DM&IR 203 and 206 are the SD38-2s that have been retired.

  • Ok, 416 is officially retired. Looks as if I saw it very shortly before it was put away for the final time. Wow do I feel lucky I saw it.
