Teen Railfan Place

  • I'll take maroon DM&IR engines over fake WC SD40-3s any day! I'm glad I am getting to finally see WC power on the IC on road freights and not in the deadline.I also caught the 6006 not too long ago. Thankfully, it was leading and it had a nice engineer. Hopefully if they do retire the SD38-2s maybe EJ&E would be interested in getting them back. I doubt it, but you never know. EJ&E has more then enough power already, and almost all of their SD38-2s have been rebuilt to -3 standards. The only ones that haven't are the two SD38s EJ&E didn't sell to DM&IR (650 and 654) and SD38-2 662. I wonder if EJ&E's SDMs in DM&IR paint will outlast the DM&IR painted engines CN still has. I have a feeling that they will with the possible SD38-2 retirements and the repaiting of the SD40-3s. Those repainted SD40-3s just don't look right on ore trains, and I would think gray SD40-3s wouldn't look any better. I would assume the last DM&IR SDMs would be put out of service also? Why else would the fake WC SD40-3s get straight air brakes.

  • Alec, so far, at least on the Orerail yahoo group, there haven't been any rumblings about when they'll actually arrive. But they are supposed to be coming at some point. If it does happen, converting them to straight air would take a little while I would think, and should be something that somebody at Homewood, NRE or Proctor will notice, depending on where they do the conversion. Maybe (or probably) Max has a better source and he might be able to tell you something different, but so far no news on their arrival that I've heard.

  • I will assume probably around this winter, as CN has no more use for them in the winter. (besides being normal power)

    If anyone sees them down by Woodcrest, its a sure sign they are on their way up, also, if a couple more Missabe units go, we will HAVE to have them up.

  • Oh yes, I forgot to mention EJ&E SD18 616 which is still in DM&IR paint. 616 is a VERY hard engine to catch. There was a second SD18 operating a few years ago but it was wrecked in the Gary, IN hump yard. It is too bad you usually can't see the 616 without trespassing as it rarely ever leaves Kirk Yard, and believe me, I'm sure the EJ&E doesn't tolerate trespassing in the yard. Thats what makes it so hard to catch.

    the L531 contained of CN 4714 GP38-2

    first time ain a while  GP38-2 came. usuall power is GP40, GP40-2LW.

  • Monday 8-13

    spent a few hours in dale today

    saw 3 trains.

    first train i saw i didnt know the id of it. bad shot took it too soon got a wave by the conductor.

    well about a half hour later a cn truck pulls up & the guy gets out & comes up to me & ask's " what are you doing here" & i said railfanning & he goes well you should bt doing this & he accused me of going on property. & he said i saw you screwin around by these cars here in the parking lot & we had our truck here. this happened last week when i was at the same place got accused of goign on property. & i was in a  town park & its public property. well today the guy goes you cant stand here you should stand behind this pole cause right now your on our property. i walked away & this guy was rude &  very demanding. if this happens agin idk what ill do. he was a  MOW guy. &  well back on a good note later a high rail truck came by WC of course. & i waved to the guy & he was younger  & waved back. i didnt talk to him cause i wasnt sure if he was gonne be like the other guy. heres the high rail

    saw a soo gondola

    later another MOw crew comes by ( they are working on the siding up ahead & places between) they had a wc truck got a pic of that. they fixed a switch & then the high rail came back & they took a break. i heard them talking & i could hear say a few bad workds F*ck, S*it & B8ch  & couldnt catch exactly every word.

    last train i saw 408  very short today

     

     

  • Brent, I like the shots. The gondola you saw. Those where rare to see down here. They usualy up north. Anyway I saw on a couple weeks ago here so, it may be the same. Also, I guess I'm heading down to the yard. See if I can get a good shot of 3022.

  • I saw a thing Dave Schauer put together that figures the Missabe needs 31 units at minimum for day to day operations, and more if there is more than one extra train a day from both two Harbors and Duluth. And right now there are something like 36 or 37 locomotives, so there is a little bit of room. But I'd say Max is right, if there are a couple more retirements, they are going to get desperate for power.

    Winter makes a lot of sense too. Would be plenty of time then to do any change-overs.

    Yesterday (August 12), the Wisconsin and Southern ran free train rides out of Madison. They were participating in an event to help raise money for a local tourist railroad and museum in North Freedom that is working to restore a old Fish Car (that was at one point used by the Wisconsin DNR to stock local lakes). The WSOR has a set of three Ex-Metra (nee CNW) Bi-Level cars that they use for just such purposes. The WSOR 10C, an E9, is used to power the train, as it's the only WSOR unit with a HEP unit for supplying power the passenger cars. I headed down for the day to take a few photos of some of the afternoon runs, which left Madison on the hour.

    I also then chased the WSOR Reedsburg Local a short ways North to Waunakee, Wisconsin, a small town about 10 miles North of Madison. The local usually runs late Sunday afternoons and is in light for a good portion of their run North. With the passenger stuff running on the same trackage until about 4:30 though, their start time was set back and so the only shots I got were just before sunset. They had three units and 59 cars yesterday, which is much, much larger than normal. It was a nice catch, though I wish they had left at their normal time so that I could have chased them further in sunlight.

  • We were talking about before if someone sees the fake WC SD40-3s at Woodcrest they would be going up to the DM&IR soon. I hate to be the one to report bad news, but I saw one at Woodcrest about a week ago.  Hopefully its there for some minor work, not to recieve straight air for the DM&IR. There were 2-3 DM&IR engines stored there also, I would assume 418 and 209 were two of them, but I couldn't get the numbers.

  • Well hi everyone.... it's been nice looking at those pictures since I haven't seen any good pics since I left home. My camera is only getting worse, and there was one train that I took 15 similar shots of that it didn't focus on ONCE! And now I'm at a crapp camp made up mainly of people over 50 who aren't really good musicians but are here, anyways. It's pure hell, and if I went on a rant about it I would take up nearly a 1280x1024 page. The only good thing is I taught the recorder group to play Smoke on the Water, and we're perfomring it on Friday.

    ...Whoop-dee-doo.

    Here, we're only allowed on a computer for 45 minutes a day (12:30-1:15) for no readily apparant reason, but the network crashes about three times a day, so you only get on if you're lucky.

    I am hard pressed to think of any good train sightings over the last two weeks, I caught a WB BNSF Z train on Cutbank trestle (Going the wrong way, but I think the shots are acceptable) and the NSSR was the highlight of the whole trip.

    THese long, boring days I spend thinking about how much railfanning I'm going to do once I get a car and can afford enough gas to drive 200-400 miles every weekend. (I definitely want to be THE Canadian Pacific Rockies photographer!) (Of course, that means getting a better camera, some more luck, and a little more skill...)

    There was a campfire two nights ago. There was a 10 year oldwho convinced all the old people to sing "If you're happy and you know it..." and after they ran out of verses, I had to throw in "If you're emo and you know it cut your wrists" *shick shick*

    ...The height of individual creativity.

    Now I think I'm just typing because I'm bored out of my mind here, so I'll be off.

    well iv obviouly missed alot of stuff, first i finaly installed my copy of TRAINZ 2006 on a computer that will run it, then my mom started me on a project to tear out the back room, it takes some efort to tear out the plaster and lath from 1917.

    im going to start work on my on30 rr in a box layout this weekend

    be back............ well when i feel like it.

    Look me in the eyes and say that again. That's a camera strap across me. I hate railfanning in summer. It's too hot, there's too much high sun, and the shadows are too harsh.
