a direct route to chi town. tch. i'm only guessing this is short for chicago rather than chippewa falls. plenty of other routes to take, hunter! god this is depressing. and i mean WC was so nice and considerate. CN is just jerks...with drapter taper "fat" locomotives. way to further deface the SD60

I went by Homewood again on Thursday. The SD45s haven't moved a inch. There is one SD40 that hasn't been scrapped yet. GT 5936 was sitting in the engine terminal with a IC&E SD45 in Susie-Q paint. There was a IC engine stored that had a very unusual lettering job. Instead of Illinois Central, it had Illinois IC on it. That just typical CN. Other then 5936, all of the SD40s, even the CN painted ones, weren't there, probably scrapped.

It was a nice, sunny day here in Chicagoland, so I decided to make yet another trip to Homewood. To my surprize, DWP 5905 and repainted DWP 5904 were back in the deadline along with a few WC SD45s, including 7512 with special lettering, and a BC Rail C40-8M. CN hasn't even touched 5905 yet.

To the last news, they're not on the way to be scrapped. They were listed for sale on the CN website last month and the sale deadline is expired. So, that's why they're no more listed online. They might find a new life elsewhere (some shortline or rent-a-wreck?), but the high scrap metal value make their future at risk. On another hand, I understand CN in their willingness to standardize their roster: less parts inventory, easier to order / find new parts, a better knowledge of their ponies, a more modern roster, better fuel economy... I believe they have nothing against WC, DMIR, BCOL or IC roster, but they didn't own much of what CN used to operate on their life before they took over these lines and neither want they want to keep for the future. If WC or IC were running with the same models than CN, they would had kept them. I guess. Anyway, the original CN is getting rid of its own oldies like their SD40s and GP40s. All the class one railroads are cleaning their roster in our present days: look at all these BNSF, UP , CPR SD40-2s sold to the leasing companies...

SD45 7637 has just bitten the dust, it's crankshaft went out while in service on the NS.

i hope some go to lease companies or something. anything to see SD45s back on the rails again. but the truth is that these great machines just arent top dog anymore. and havent been for decades. the ugly new widecab units ensured to that... and how many shortlines will be able to pay for fuel and maintenance costs of these? i'm still hoping to see one in a museum some day

Aw, Max, don't worry about it...change happens, and there's nothing we can do...I'll miss the SD45s as much as you, for sure, but find joy in other locomotives while you still can!
SD90s don't look that bad, right? Of course, you're still entitled to hate CN for their manifold sins...

SD90s are widecabs with noselights. ugh ugh ugh ugly! but i have other favorites. trust me. SOO SD60s rule. and the SD70ACE doesnt look too bad. the nose with that cubic walkway in it looks kinda nice. the GE windows do NOT, however.

I did hear talk about a SD45 having problems. I heard that 7637 had its problems according to Illinirail.7637's next stop will most likely be the Homewood deadline with all the other deadlined ones.

All good things come to an end at some point. The good news is that at least WC's SD45s enjoyed a longer than expected life, while showing a new generation of railfans a truly unique locomotive from the 1960s.
