Another merger

  • In my opinion, I can see a possible merger between NS and KCS. The two railroads are both Southern style railroads and would go good together. I really can't see any other mergers taking place. I also don't understand why when one railroad takes out another, they have to completely repaint everything. If NS and KCS went together, NS could keep their paint scheme and KCS could keep their paint scheme. Any new engines bought could be painted in a new paint scheme that represents both railroads.

The next move will not be a merger but a buy-out. CN and NS will make a move to purchase the CSX. CSX is the weak sister in the east. CN and NS will take of CSX what they both want. NS a route around Washington DC and CN will move to Atlanta, GA and JAcksonville, FL. What neither want will be sold off to various short lines such as the Wheeling and the I&O.

If CN got as far as FL then surely they couldnt carry on calling themselves "Canadian National", in distance terms it's like having British Rail in Poland..

As for the unwanted trackage, I see the G&W expanding their shortline empire yet further.... I hope you like pumpkins [;)]

  • I have heard talk that CSX and UP might consider something. You have to figure that if BNSF and NS merge, there would have to be something else happen or else the weaker would perish. I think it would be interesting if UP/CSX happened.

CSX's locomotives don't run like crap. But, what Conrail locomotives CSX got, sound horrible. I've been standing next to the same two locomotives before, one CSX, one Conrail. The Conrail sounded like it was going to explode, the CSX sounded normal. And I see pictures all the time where NS locomotives have burst into flames somewhere in or on the locomotive. I actually think it is funny to see a large ball of fire coming out of one of the competition's locomotives. :D...Haha.

CSX and UP are my two favorite Class A railroads. While in Nashville, I see Union Pacific locomotives on CSX trains and vise-versa. If it weren't for the rolling stock I couldn't tell the difference between the two.

  • I don't want any more mergers of class 1 railroads. We have already lost enough class 1's to mergers.
Yes we call it the Dinky. Why? Well cause it's dinky! Proud to be the official train geek of Princeton University!

  • I'm in no hurry to see an American ocean-to-ocean rail company. How many have already read the cover story in July's TRAINS? Because the author deals with the likelihood of, and possible repercussions of, another round of merger mania.

Frankly, I wouldn't care if the CN bought KCS for way too much money. But that's about all the STB ought to countenance, in my opinion.

I don't think a railroad has to be huge to be good. Look at the CP, with their 14,000 track miles.

  • I live in Fairfield Illinois 62837, along Norfolk Southern's St. Louis line which goes from St. Louis to Princeton Indiana, from there I think it goes to Louisville Kentucky. A lot of people seem to strongly believe that a merger between NS/BNSF is very possible. I do see some BNSF power on Norfolk Southern's tracks through here, but I see a lot more Union Pacific through here than BNSF. Used to all I would see back in the 1990s was NS, but then UP began coming through here from Mount Vernon. They were the first Foreign Power to come through here, then CSX started coming through. After the Conrail split-up CSX does not hardly come through any more though. I think a good merger would be KCS/NS, but it is also very likely that a UP/NS merger might occur.

  • I have done some more research, and I believe that Norfolk Southern will not merge with anyone else. Of all of the major railroads left, I think that Norfolk Southern is the strongest. I think that a NS/BNSF merger will not happen. Everybody thought that CN/BNSF merger would occur, and it never did. SP/SF were so sure of a merger that they started painting everything in a new paint scheme just to find out that their merger could not happen. It is hard to determine when a merger will occur, for now though, I, and a friend of mine who has a college degree in law and business, think that the railroads will just continue to grow as they are.
