Another merger

  • I have done some more research, and I believe that Norfolk Southern will not merge with anyone else. Of all of the major railroads left, I think that Norfolk Southern is the strongest. I think that a NS/BNSF merger will not happen. Everybody thought that CN/BNSF merger would occur, and it never did. SP/SF were so sure of a merger that they started painting everything in a new paint scheme just to find out that their merger could not happen. It is hard to determine when a merger will occur, for now though, I, and a friend of mine who has a college degree in law and business, think that the railroads will just continue to grow as they are.
  • Nope no more mergers. BNSF just came out and said " we are not needing to merge" due to the influx of buisness from containers from overseas. STB is against it workers will be against it. Hell the UTU is trying to dump engineer/conductor classifications! Who has time to merge!

Yes we are on time but this is yesterdays train

If CN got as far as FL then surely they couldnt carry on calling themselves "Canadian National", in distance terms it's like having British Rail in Poland..

As for the unwanted trackage, I see the G&W expanding their shortline empire yet further.... I hope you like pumpkins [;)]

Dont be so sure, they got the IC , who is in New Orleans, and thats right by the ocean! I have to "like" the CN a little cuz they got my favorite railroad, The WC! But i really cant stand Hunter [:(!]

  • I've been seeing a lot of UP power on the CSX main line north of Atlanta. I've been wondering if something isn't up between UP and CSX.

  • This months Trains has the feature article on every possible rail scenario pro and con.
Another mega-merger would be a long and expensive drama.
The left-outs would have to be appeased where competition would be affected.
Examples... NS+BNSF= CSX getting to KC from Chicago, and Birmingham to Memphis
UP+NS= Divesting a route between KC and to St. Louis to either CSX or more likely BNSF.
    There are many more.
The likliest one I wolld believe would ne CN+CSX. It's a good fit in the Northeast and Southeast, the only gap is once again Birming ham to Memphis.
IC had a line between those 2 points, but sold it to NS.

  • To rest all railfan fears there is only one answer. I have to tell you (not bragging). C.N. is trying to gobble up the K.C.S. (a known fact for years). And E. Hunter Harrison President of the C.N. (which was fired from the bnsf) has it out for them and will not stop till they have merged. As far as the N.S. they don't have the balls to merge with anyone considering they are so strict that noone wants to be a part of there communist way of running a railroad. I am a conductor for a class 1 railroad(cant say which one) but to put it plainly all railroads share power or rather steal it because of contracts. Just cause you see someone elses power on there tracks doesn't mean anything. We all borrow from one another. To put to rest fears of another class 1 merging with the u.p. in the near future you have to look at size. The u.p. is to big to merge right now, not to metion how pourly and illmanered it is run. As far as passenger rail traffic it is about to become a thing of the past in most places due to the fact of too many chiefs and not enough indians. As very few people know, shortlines feed the class ones and keeps them alive with regular traffic and constant revenue. All railroads share freight, power, labor, and greed. This is a fact. If you want to see a merger of two class ones just watch the C.N. or B.N.S.F.

  • If there is one it will be bnsf and ns. there managment is the same employee unfriendly . cut cost by any means, they are so alike in so many ways. and it would benifit them a coast to coast line.

  • I think it is too soon to tell, but, I have seen UP and CSX sharing a lot of locomotives, plus the rumors flying around that they are going to merge. I don't live close enough to anything else to tell.

If I had to choose, UP and CSX. But, I don't want to see them together, I am not to fond of UP.
