TEEN RAILFAN PLACE-LET'S TALK TRAINS! Thread Locked

  • Well, ive been busy chasing the WC 7527. Check railpics for the shot of the beaut leading. I havent had too much to write about either.

But when I went to Northtown a few days ago, I saw the Train Simulator BNSF Dash 9. Besides that and WC stuff, nothing has been noteworthy.

  • I guess I am another one of those recycled teens floating around. But I hope I don't scare you guys that much, since I am only 27.
I always loved trains, and growing up next to the AT&SF Transcon tracks, I admit I took it for granted, but I loved every train passing through there. Even when AT&SF turned to BNSF I still loved the trains passing by. Originally I am from Flagstaff AZ, but relocated to Gainesville-area Florida.
There is hardly any trains around here, they come very rare. The tracks are hidden in a forest, but I don't really want to take the time to find them, cause every forest around here, usually comes with a swamp added in. CSX coming through Archer, you'll be lucky to find four trains in one day. I still love the sound when they come around though. When I relocate to Keystone Heights, I can do better train spotting in Starke, or Palatka
Recently I have taken some pictures of trains, but compared to what I saw on RP.net, they don't even compare. I still like them though. It's also more of a learning experience for me as well.

Well, thought I would pop in and say hello. My name is Duff, and I am a train-a-holic.

  • Only 4 trains a day!!? The Iowa Northern tracks a few miles from me see one train a day. They used to see one train a week but with the new ethanol plant there's a daily train now.
  • Now thats rare!

Can't wait to move, so I can get a better idea on how to take better pictures of the locos.

  • Welcome!

It doesnt take much to learn how to take "good shots", but you will need to develop an "eye for it", as in new places to shoot from. artsy shots, and something where the sun is positioned right for the shot. Always try to shoot an engine when its lit nicely, as in, its not 7 PM and all the light is on the rear end, and nothing on the nose. Railpics is a great place to learn how to take good shots, but they dont really accept any of the artsy fartsy shots. But.... It does become a drug... I use it almost everyday!

  • You think that's rare, try three trains a WEEK! And think of the train only coming after about 1900. That's all I ever get up here in little Reedsburg, Wisconsin, I'm at the end of a branch line. Sad part is it was once the CNW's "Route of the 400" And used to see 15-30 trains a day, from Passenger to all kinds of mixed frieght. Now it sees a three time a week local, and the occasional ballast train loading at a quarry down near the beginning of the line (not near me). Both of you have really got it lucky.

  • Nah, I'm the one who has it lucky. Today I saw 2816 again. On my way home from school. And yes, I did get pics. Which will be back in....just over a month, unless I take 30 pictures in the next 30 hours. In which case, my parents will kill me.
Speaking of trains per day/week/year, we get somewhere around 30 trains a day right here....and I am counting the locals that go by twice. I totally win. Sometimes I can get five an hour....and, for Evan, two of those have GP38-2s.
    Man, 6060 on Sunday, 2816 today...GOOD week.
    Storytime.
I heard the whistle, and set up....then a cloud came over. It's still lingering as she speeds around the corner at 60+MPH....but, it BARELY moves away, maybe just in time, maybe not, I was too exited to tell. I got a couple pics when it was in the sun, anyways.
    60+MPH....no event recorders on 2816. Tongue [:P]
Also, last night, I ordered a P2k GN GP20 w/o sound in Empire Builder colours....second cheapest locomotive I've ever bought! Booyakasha! $78.99!

  • I get for sure one train a day (the WC transfer). And then you'll get a coal train once about every 2 days, and ofcourse you have the Minnesota Commercial local job. And if your lucky, a SOO Dresser Turn (goes up to Dresser and gets loaded with trap rock).

4 trains a week for me too. unless i care to catch the roadrailer in Altoona every night, which i dont. too repetitive. but sometimes i get so desperate to see a train, that i go catch it. the SD70M, which was changed from 2 to 1, pulling the same triple crown trailers. still a train though.

    Your friendly neighborhood CNW fan.

  • Well I got atleast 12 trains a day on CSX's McCormic Sub and 1 intermodle train on certain days. About the same action on on the GA Sub from Atlanta but 1 more intermodle Q129 and some coal trains make their way up there plus a visit from the Masters Train which CSX goes up there and let there officals watch the Masters Golf Turniment. There are Locals from Augusta yard to Harrison Yard plus heard a A train. Example- A772. NS dosn't have alot of action atleast 8 trains 155,156,157,191 and 192 that I know of plus locals from Nixon Yard to Augusta Yard and back or the other way around. Have seen Millitary Cargo trains carrying intermodle like boxes carring Military Equipment to Savanna,GAor Charleston,SC to get loaded on a ship then shipped arcoss the Altantic Ocean. Also there is a TTX transfer where NS dropes off TTX cars to TTX's Hamburg,SC Shop to get repaired and there is a local going to somewhere on the SC side that carries freight.

Saluda,NC the famous Saluda Grade has 0 trains.

  • Decisions? No. CP AC4400.....
I'm still saving for the PCM steamer. After a few calculations, I decided that, given my current earning habits, I'll be ale to scrape enough together in time for the 4-8-4. As for P2K quality, I think the fact that this will be my 12th Proto locomotive speaks for itself.

    Don't they look great?

I'm guessing you're going to pick these up?

Matt, I like the P2K stuff myself, although so far I've only got one of their E9s in the southern Scheme. That'll get repainted though for the Wisconsin & Southern along with a second E9 for the WSOR so I'll have the matched set like in my avatar. I like P2Ks stuff alright, I just wish I could afford more of it. I'm taking the plunge for my first Atlas Engine here w/DCC in December, so I'll see how I like them too. They are coming out with GP38s in the WSOR scheme, so I've got to get at least one.....

Well, better get going, I've got things to do yet this morning. We'll see you guys around.
