TEEN RAILFAN PLACE-LET'S TALK TRAINS! Thread Locked

  • boy do I have a story to tell..unfortunately, a large portion must be censored!
Went to my first day of school, ho hum, chemistry the teacher told anyone who wasn't going for a career in chem to rethink their options and go into plain science, 10 people weren't there the next day..CALM. Career And Life Management. For a while I thought I was going to be completely alone in there..like in chem..but then a cute girl that I'm freinds with showed up. :-D Then double social....my god that was boring. Felt like elementary school. Colouring in maps with pencil crayons for two periods. Then math. Apparantly I was switched out of it and nobody told me. WTF!!!! I need that to graduate! And then home to reflect on my day over a pile of homework..
AC6000CW, great news! Problem with such a low f-stop is that your depth of field will be like death. I worry about shooting at f2.8! Of course, I'm sure that you'll be shooting a lot of trains with it, and those usually aren't that close, or you're probably in trouble! :-P
Ack! Bell soon, gotta go to social...

Colin, Get your Atlas switches as soon as you possibly can. Atlas is raising the prices on most of their stuff here very soon, if it's not tomorrow already. I don't know how much it will be going up, but it will be quite a bit.

3 foot is probably an okay heigth. That way you can run it while sitting in a chair too, especially if you get a chair that can roll.

Atlas isn't a bad brand for rolling stock for sure, and from what I've heard their locomotives aren't that bad either. Another brand you might want to consider that are a fairly good value is Athearn Blue Box kits. They can usually be picked up for between 7-11 dollars a car. They are kits, which means you have to do some minor assembly, but it isn't a lot and most of the time I actually consider it fun, I enjoy building the cars. They are fairly detailed but aren't overly so, but I find that okay, as the cars are handled a lot anyway and little parts will just break off.

Another brand of Cars you might want to consider are the Walthers cars. They are a pretty good quality, well detailed, and most are ready to run. The only bad part I find is the price, as even on sale in the Walthers Catologue they are expensive. But, if you have some extra money and want really good quality, I would say go for it.

Keep an eye out in your Walthers Sale Catalog too, sometimes good deals can be found in there. I should know, I order from it through my LHS (To avoid shipping, and they will still honor the price discount) quite often. I'd check and see if your local hobby shop will honor the prices from the Walthers Sales catolag, as it will save you a lot of money on shipping and hobby items.

  • Colin, If those Walthers 2 packs for 20-30 dollars are ready to run, I'd at least consider them. That's not a bad price for RTR, 10-15 dollars a car, especially so if they are Walthers cars.

Max, not kidding. Here is the text of the Atlas E-mail newsletter of 1/26/06:

    Dear Consumer,

Just a reminder that the February 1st price increase is fast approaching. There is still time, though, to stock up on all track, structures, layouts and accessories at old prices.

Visit your local hobby shop today and take advantage of the extra savings.

We appreciate your continued support if the fine products available through Atlas Model Railroad Company.

    - Thank you,
    Atlas Model Railroad Co. Inc.

I don't know what the price increase is, but it has already taken effect as of today. Hopefully it's less than 50 cents or something.

Well guys, not much interesting, other than I had fun playing Badmittin (sp?) in Phy-ed today. Guess I might as well mosey on out, not much else to tell.

  • Howdy, what'd I miss?

    Oh come on, grow up....
  • Well, I better order them as soon as possible then. Shift into high gear. My dad likes the idea, just have to ask permission about the switches.

So...., when does this great story begin, sounds like a normal day to me.
  • Meh. my normal days are pretty boring..so any day where something happens makes a story better than "I had a boring day"
Alec - ES44s are new, they're different, and for once, GE made something that looks better than an EMD! A first! Personally, I'm not in love with the sound, it kinda sounds like it's had a few years of deffered maintenence..

  • The sound is cool. They are a good engine. And its just boring as hell. Sooooooooooo we know how i feel on that one.......

  • The Gevos also have a better load time... but all those GE's are dogs..they pull their heart out...but r slow as all hell.... im sorry SD40 or 60 any day.
  • Don't you guys dare keep cutting down the GEVOs!!! CSX's ES44DCs are AWESOME! Cool horn, nice engine sounds and of course, one of the best GE's ever produced. Although, the pittiful GEVO produced was the AC44CWCTE and AC45CWCTE in my opinion. Those sound like they have had no maintenance for several years! Plus, their horn is weird. And I know that doesn't really matter.

Now, BNSF's ES44ACs rock. Not only do they look awesome in the HIII, but they sound good and also, if I remember correctly, they have good tractive effort. And don't yell at me for saying this if their tractive effort is the same as the others.

For the ES40DCs, I have no opinion, besides the fact they look good in the NS Horsehead scheme that is in smaller font. At least for those that are painted [:D].

Oskar- Have you seen a CSX SD80MAC? I've never seen an SD80MAC or I've also never seen an NS SD80MAC either. Have you seen any? I know Conrail bought 28 only, but still....

And one last question. Which CSX C40-8s are in the "edited" scheme still? If any? And how many are in YN3? I know 7492 is. And what's the news on CSX's 8 C39-8s?

    Just wondering and am curious...

  • I have to agree with you guys on the GEVOs. None of them really look that good, they just look like a typical crappy GE unit. They look a little better in BNSF paint, but even then they aren't that great. I prefer the older EMD units anyday. Give me a SD40-2, SD60, GP38, GP9 and day over a GEVO.

Well, not much interesting from me today. I did get the four walls up for the yard office on my module yesterday, but not much else interesting. I've just been doing a little painting today too. Speaking of, I should get back to that.....

  • Hey, just got the new Walthers, and some switches are now only $8.00 a piece, so I might be going after them.
    Colin from prr.railfan.net
  • That ain't too bad, what scale.
  • Eric, they are HO, for the switching layout that I think will be started soon.
