I can't seem to find much info on it other than the fact it is at the Museum of Transportation in St. Louis, and I have only been able to find 3 or 4 pictures. I have been a fan of the GS series since childhood (I am 18, I first saw 4449 at Railfair '91 in Sacramento when I was 5), and I wish I could see 4460 run, even though it mostly did freight & San Jose-San Francisco commuter service and I don't think it was ever a Daylight. I would also like to see it back in the bay area.

Does anyone know if it is still operable or if it can be restored? I think it would be really great if it was...

Any info would be greatly appreciated!

The GS6 could be overhauled completely much like the 4449 was and cound be run of course if all of the boiler work and the working portions of the engine checked out good. The 1522 was in worse shape than the 4460, but it was restored. The GS6 ran the last excursion on the SP in 1958 and was sent to St Louis shortly thereafter. We had been on it many times and thought had great it would be to see it run, but remember, they stopped the 1522 because of money and insurance, not because it would not run. It just takes money and help to run a steam locomotive, and then a railroad to run it on.

Yeah that's true. Do you think it would be possible if it could at least be brought to a museum in the bay area like the the Golden Gate Railroad Museum in San Francisco or Santa Clara County Railroad Museum, which is currently looking for a place to build, or even the state museum in Sacramento? That would be really good start. And how could those museums not be interested?

It doesn't even look like it is a major attraction at the Museum of Transportation, it's not listed on the website either. But then again I haven't been there so I don't know. I think if it came back to the bay area more people could appreciate it, you know?

The Muesum of Transportation is a good place in general for a locomotive to be viewed. They have continued to build roofs over much of the collection and did run the 1522 for several years. Remember, the the 4460 is a great piece for thier collection, and I am sure would not be traded unless they got something special.
I don't think it will ever run again, but who would have guess the 4449, the 700, the 3751 and many others would have run again. I was in Cheyenne right after the 3985 was installed for display near the station and guess what, it was removed and runs again today.

Never give up on an idea like this.
