Does anyone here remember the passenger service between the above two towns? Especially the history and demise of it.
VIA ran an RDC between these cities until the late 70s or early 80s. I don't think there has been any passenger rail service since then.
VIA discontinued its Toronto-Vancouver Super Continental in November 1981; between Winnipeg and Saskatoon it operated via Rivers, Melville, and Watrous. It was replaced by Winnipeg-Saskatoon stub train via Virden, Moosomin, and Regina, using the route of previous Regina-Saskatoon service via Davidson. I recall seeing this train with one locomotive, a baggage car, and one coach. There was also a stub train between Saskatoon and Edmonton that didn't connect with the Winnipeg-Saskatoon train.
Both the Winnipeg-Saskatoon and Saskatoon trains were replaced by a through Winnipeg-Edmonton train (Panorama, a previous CN-named train and using the CN route via Melville) in June 1984, thus ending rail passenger service between Saskatchewan's two largest cities.
