Trains.com Reader Poll - June 2004

  • I consider the Skeena and Rocky Mountaineer to be tourist railroads even though one is a VIA train on CN rails and the other runs on CP rails. My wife and I will ride both in the next two weeks. Later we intend to ride the tourist railroads of Colorado, either on an organised tour or under our own steam if we cannot get confirmation. The Grand Canyon Railway is on our itinerary also.
  • I will go to the St. Louis Iron Mountain and Southern, an old Iron Mountain line that became Mo-Pac. They operate a 15 miles or so of the old line. I ride it once (or more) times a year, and I have fun and see new things every time!!! They have a 2-4-2 Columbia type steam loco with a tender, built by Porter in the '40s. They also have an ex-PRR E8 (in maroon paint with gold stripes). It's number is 5898 if I'm not mistaken, it worked for PRR, Amtrak, and a tourist railroad somewhere in Colorado (I think). I have operated the E8 and rode in the cab of the steamer. Nothing like the hum of a pair 567s and the chuff of a steamer only about 90 miles away in Jackson, Missouri. I can't wait to ride!!!

  • I`d like to get to Spencer,n.c. and ride behind the shay or the Gaulley consolidation agine.. The museam is an excellent place to visit when in N.C.[:P]
  • Yep, the Skunk Train, aka the California Western (now owned by the Sierra Railway), it's only about 15 miles north of my home here in Redwood Valley in Willits. They have all kinds of awesome plans for it, including another daily train between Willits and Fort Bragg, another steam loco, steam locos operating all the way between Willits and Fort Bragg instead of just Fort Bragg and Northspur as it is now, and car ferries (like the Copper Canyon in Mexico) between the two towns. The NWP is also being worked on full blast, and wil resume freight operations between Schellville (where they interchange with the California Northern) and Willits (the Skunk Train interchange) this fall, so railroading is getting pretty awesome again here on the North Coast!

  • Just came back from the US to Canada. Rode one train in California and two in Colorado. Will be going back to Colorado in Sept to ride the other 4 that we missed.
All great trips. Lots of fun.
  • I plan to go see the new station that is being built at the other end of the Strasburg Railroad in Paridice Pa. I also plan to go the WK&S in Kempton, Pa, and also go over Horseshoe curve on an Amtrak train. I also hope to go see the new Cass to Spruce ride down at the Cass Railroad.
  • I visited the Gold Coast Railroad Museum in Miami last April. They have a program that lets you drive a GP-7.
  • I am planning on visiting Tweetsie Railroad in Boone,N.C. sometime this summer
and I am planning on going to the North Carolina Transportation Museum numerous times.[;)]
  • I am leaving on july 5th on amtrac for montana from metro park iselin,nj
The trip will take 2-1/2 days to get out there from new jersey and 2-1/2 days to get back.Perhaps amtrac is not considered a tourist railroad but its better then nothing.

  • During the last week of July I am taking an Alaskan cruise on the Norwegian Spirit out of Seattle, and I do intend to ride the White Pass and Yukon Railroad....

I will also be striking out another state I have not visited, Alaska.... The only states I have not visited are South Dakota, Wyoming, Michigan, and the New England states of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusettes, Rhode Island, and Connecticut....

Amtrak doesn't have any trains running through South Dakota and Wyoming.... I'll probably ride Amtrak to Michigan in the next year, and possibly a visit to New England is forthcoming, in an attempt to strike more states.....
  • Plan to visit the Tennessee Valley Railroad in July, along with in Incline Railroad also.
  • No at the moment, if the Royal Hudson was still running I would definately take a ride on it this summer, but it hasn't done anything for about a half decade now. [:(]

I was thinking about heading over to Vancouver Island and taking the Via RDC, but at the moment it is down for repairs..... hopefully I'll make it out there one of these days, it's all a matter of having the cash.
  • We like to visit the Weka Pass railway in North Canterbury, South Island New Zealand but this summer we will probably visit the rail at Ashburton, Mid Canterbury they have an old K class loco called K88 and she is a real show piece and she is in running order
  • I also plan on hitting Dennison Ohio's Trainfest, was just at Orrville's Ohio's Depot Day's, was a little wet out, but had a great time, free train rides and rail car rides just to name a few thing's that were there.
    Doug, Madison Ohio.
