Teen Railfan Place - Winter 2009 Thread Locked

  • Robby,

i might have to join you to that dells trip, i have off of school them 2 days. i was gonna go to rochelle but then i never did shoot in the dells before. ill have to see. i did wanna get some BNSF power then knowing the CP  the morning is the best bet. then amtrak around noon.

  • I'm not sure exactly when I'll be at the bridge, it depends on weather and the Dells trips are not just solely for railfanning either. The best bet would be in the early morning, I normally get up right around sunrise and head to the bridge. You will want to bring a scanner, last time I went to the Dells all the trains would say "approach Wisconsin Dells" then 30 seconds later here came a train flying over the bridge. The CP seems to be very hit or miss through there. Early mornings and late evenings before and after the WB Empire Builder seem to be the best bet. I haven't had the greatest luck in the middle of the day.

  • A busy few days here, with the floods rerouting trains over the Brainerd Sub, traffic has picked up a bit. Here are the big catches:

First up, a GEVO and an ACE lead a coal empty west. Awesome crew with this train.

Next, a Dash 9 leads a coal empty west. Dash 9s are very rarely seen on the Brainerd Sub.

And last, but certainly not least, the big catch of the past few days. Two new ES44C4s lead a rerouted Manifest through Aitkin, MN. Manifests don't run at all on the Brainerd Sub, and since the rerouting of trains away from the Grand Forks Sub, I believe this is the first one that has run during daylight hours. 6619 and 6620 look rather swank.

  • Introducing BNSF's first of their long awaited line of heritage engines! The next one up will be a GN SD70MAC. There will be a SD70MAC painted in each one of BNSF's heritage schemes and unlike UP's they will wear the real paint scheme of the railway who they are representing. This one will have to go back to the shop to because BNSF put BNSG instead of BNSF on it. http://www.trainpix.com/BNSF/EMDORIG/SD70MAC/BNSG9980.HTM

I just CAN'T wait for the OTHER heritage units that BNSF WILL be making in the future. Something to REALLY look out for at Rochelle. April fools!!!!!!
And thankyou Robby for the happy B-Day! I remember the white type too.
Oh, and EJE 670 was sighted in Wausau! The first EJE locomotives I have seen! I'll have photos tommrow. My internet was down for quite some time.

Which brings me to this. I took some Stevens Point trips on the 27 and 29. Nothing to special. Just...normal power.

Nice photoshop job there, April Fools!

I certainly wish it were true!

  • Rats, I was hoping someone would fall for it! Tongue

Yeah right Jordan, 670 was in Dubuque, IA a few days ago! Nice try! April Fools! It's also a coincidence it is posted right after a photoshopped BNSF engine I found, followed by a fake story I made up! Until I see a real, non-photoshopped photo I won't fall for this!

Onto real news, and it isn't good. I just recieved word the IC 6000s and the WC 3000s will most likely not be coming back into service. Another note, no EJ&E SD38-2s will be going up to the DM&IR for the forseeable future.

Then there is some good news believe it or not! Sounds like CP bought the lease on the SOO SD60s, so they won't be going back when their leases are up!

  • Yey CP! That means I'll still be able to see some SD60's up here. They put them on the Expressways between Montreal and Toronto, which usually has 2 SD40-2's. Either way, it's quite a sight, especially when they are Westbound, throwing it into notch 8 as they come out of the yard at Lachine/Dorval.

    Alex

  • Darn Robby, I wanted to see you get in your car and drive up here...Tongue

Who ever photo shopped that engine is really good, but if you look close enough, you can tell it was originally a faded orange MAC.

Yay, that means CP will still have SD60s!

Next weekend I hope to take a trip to the CN White Pine sub. Reports say that two WC GP40s are working there. This isn't a super rare occurrence up there, as WC GP40s get sent there all the time, so there always is a chance they get paired up. Looking at the map, it looks dead up there. Very little road; just like Minnesota! So I'll be getting more info on that.

BTW, do you know anything about this Noah? I'll guess not as I don't think you've visited that line yet.

Some sad news to report to EJ&E and DM&IR fans. it appears EJ&E 616, which has long been the last high-hood SD18 running on the EJ&E, has been retired. It was spotted going east on the Line Train today, most likely heading to Matteson to be interchanged with the former IC to be taken to Homewood and put into the deadline. If this was 616's last day, I will say farewell and hope it finds a new home that will take care of it. Hey LSRM, ya know, you could forget rebuilding the 193 or 316 back to a high nose and just get one that's already a high nose! Unfortunatly I doubt CN will donate another maroon to them, even though they should! It would be a shame to see such a beauty scrapped, thats for sure.

Well first of all we wanted a sd38 instead of the 316…but they said we could have one…for 50,000…a discount from the normal 25,000 but yes conversation has happened about the 616 and yes it seams that maybe we could get it…CN donated a locomotive about every two years to us for the last 6 years…if we could just weasel another out. But the generator and computer come first for the SD45….which will see NP paint this summer

  • I've been train-deprived for a week while I was in Belize, Central America, but I did see an inbound MBTA train on the way home from the airport...

  • Well, unfortunatly CN is starting to make major motive power reassignments. First, CN has stored SD38-2s 659 and 665 at Joliet with the 616, as well as 4 SW1200s, a SW1001 and a former Missabe SDM. CN has reassigned two GTW GP38-2s, a repainted GTW GP9R, and a repainted IC geep to the J, as well as two SD40us, a SD40-2W, and two GP9RMs to the EJ&E. That makes a total of two SD38-2s, a SD38, a SD18, a slug, a SDM, four SW1200s and a SW1001 gone already. CN got 32 of the J engines, 11 are already gone. It looks like CN is going to retire anything lower than the SD38-2s. CN has been using two EJ&E engines, 666 for JSW1 and 656 for N21, that's it, everything else has been using CN power. The one good thing is that everything except the 650 has not been retired and may very well come back when the economy picks up, it does seem like CN is giving the J SD38-2s a shot, and I've heard a rumor five more may be leaving for service on the IC soon. If that happened, I would think 659 and 665 will be two of them.

  • While walking home today I saw headlights in the distance. So I waited around by the tracks, even though I didn't have my camera. It was a good idea, I saw CN's Budd Track Inspection Car come thru. I waved, and the engineer gave me a nice blast of that P5.

I also saw a nice CP intermodal train roar thru, with 2 SD40-2's on the point. Even though the weather was terrible, I really wish I had the camera!

    Alex

  • Good evening. I had my camra today but I wasn't near the tracks in time! I live near the NS and was with my grandpa. We were visiting one of his friends when I hered the westbound train come roaring through at tracspeed. I thought Oh Man! Then I hered a nother eastbound race through at trackspeed. Then I was really disapointed.

Myself and Kale caught 3 SD60's today. Here just pics of them:

Boy we just get the best power in the states dont we?

    There was also two GP35's, SW1500, 3 SD40-2's, 2 BN MAC's, and GP38-2's nearby. Oh a GP40X also. Whistling
