I wanna see SD45s...
For rare old stuff, how about:
New England Southern GP10 (railroad is now gone since track lease expired)
Ex-Amtrak FL9 - stored then, but has been pulled from the track and is either being restored or stripped for parts
Unpatched CNW covered hopper (rare in the east, if nowhere else)
Bay Colony's Trash Train on the 2nd longest lift bridge in the US, loco was sold to the Grafton & Upton, and BCLR is gone too, replaced by Mass Coastal
My great-grandfather boarding Amtrak's Silver Meteor in 1974
NASA SW1500
Conway Scenic Ry steam locomotive
How's that for a lot of old photos?
Yeah Robby, I know all about those rebuilt SD38-2s on UP. A lot of them look really cool for UP power.
I have seen at least one in an image that had a low Z stripe (The grey is lowered instead of the yellow being raised like on the SD70Ms.) which I love. That was one of my biggest gripes with UP's scheme. Way too much yellow. The low Z stripe helped that a lot and made them look really cool.
Than if that wasn't neat enough, that very same unit had MINIWINGS! Not a whole bunch of UP spartan cabs got those nifty little wings on the nose. but the few that did look really neat!
And I still think this came out great when I painted it:
I plan on painting the trucks silver too when I have the time. It should look great!
Your friendly neighborhood CNW fan.
YYEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!! It just went from my least favorite day of the week to a great day!
One of the Comet I sets (one of the two that I mentioned yesterday; I think 4 cars, running with 4208) has been moved to the Morris & Essex Lines!!! I would DIE to get out and see that set before it gets pulled. I really wish they would (highly doubt they will) so a "Farewell to the Comet Is" trip, kinda like they did with the U34CHs back in 94.
Tyler, those videos are documented history. Although they weren't that rare back in the spring (even into the fall), it was always great to see them. And there are now only 4 FHs running systemwide (there are 37 PHs total). For the last couple months, Transit has been pulling an average of one set (normally about 4-5 cars) a week.
Caught the same train that I saw yesterday. Not sure if it was the same set, though (today was 40?7 [not sure what the cars were]; yesterday was 4027 and 4 CVs). I was wondering why it came 6 minutes ahead of schedule (closest scheduled train is at 7:04, EB to Hoboken). Found out that it is a deadhead. It comes from Port Morris; and starts somewhere east (probably Dover or Denville).

Cool stuff guys, heres a few nice catches on my end.
And the best part!
Yes, I slept good that night.....
Alec(Three Missabe SD38-2's couldnt pull a 35,061 ton potato chip train!)
I bet three EJ&E SD38-2s could pull a 35,061 ton potato train though! They are able to pull loaded coal trains up steep grades. I've seen some gems added to Railpics of the two EJ&Es in Iowa, spectacular looking stuff! I'd rather have them here where they belong but at least people are getting them out in Iowa, and the good thing is it appears CN is still using the red strobe lights on the J engines in Iowa! I'm concerned CN will eventually remove the red strobe lights, because the red strobe is one of the most noticable features of the EJ&E.
Alec, great catch, I like that CSX SD40-2 trailing!
A great day just got even greater! The CI set is supposed to be based out of Port Morris. Hopefully I'll see it sometime before they change the rotation.
Missabe SD38-2's could out pull J's anyday. They are geared and weighted to lug taconite trains up 2+% grades all day.
And Max, they are not turbocharged.

A battle of two different railroad's SD38-2s...

"No, mine!"
"Mine!"
Well, all of those SD38-2s were owned and built for the same company since both DM&IR and EJ&E were transtar companies until the Transtar breakup. If the breakup didn't happen, I bet DM&IR, EJ&E and B&LE would all still be independant. As soon as one domino fell, the others went also. Funny how EJ&E and DM&IR are once again under one owner, unfortunatly that being CN. It seems USS has been trying a ICG type approach by selling off its lines and reducing others.
I'm hoping when the time comes for the remaining DM&IR SD38-2s to get bumped from ore service that CN sends at least one down here to the J, even if it is just for one or two runs. It would be pretty nice to see a DM&IR SD38-2s and a EJ&E SD38-2 paired together. Too bad the Missabe units don't have red strobes!
On another note, I read that all the 50 Oakways still on BNSF are stored and all the GP60Bs are stored, as well as almost all of the SD60Ms and a good portion of the C40-8Ws. I also read that 35% of class one engines are currently stored.
Tyler, it's not only between SD38-2s of two railroads, but its between SD38-2s from the same owners.
Robby you stole my Thunder! But the stupied forum software couldn't post my post.
This was in response to Tylers Post.
Funny thing is all the SD38(-2)s essentially came from the same place, and where interchanged between railroads. Some BLE SD38s went to the EJE and Missabe, and some of the EJE SD38s went to the Missabe. Over the years modifications have been made, but they all came from EMD. Not sure if any DMIR SD38s made it to the EJE. I know the BLE is pretty much deprived of SD38s now. I think almost all of their roster is SD40-3s and like two SD38s and maybe a SDM/18 or two.
Also Tyler Thanks for your compliment.
Alec, nice catch on the CSX SD40-2.
Atmo, I’d go for SD45s. Flared radiators...can’t beat it . (Robby don’t even start with the SD38s now ) Although the SD45-2 is MUCH longer, which gives an imposing impression. Or if you can’t decide...try the SD45X...

Jordan, what don't I steal?
The rumor has been confirmed, the Missabe wants 6 EJ&E SD38-2s sent up there. However, there is a part DM&IR fans might not like. Sounds like 308 and all the DM&IR SD38-2s except the 212 will be stored. That second part sounds kinda weird to me, why would you replace SD38-2s with more SD38-2s? The J SD38-2s were rebuilt and the DM&IR SD38-2s weren't, but I still don't think that would make any sense, plus I thought they needed the 308 or a 4-axle to switch out some mill. If I had to guess what would leave, it would probably be 674 and 675, as well as 666, 667, 668 and 669 if CN keeps going in numerical order. One thing for sure, if you like the maroon, get it now before the orange and green takes over! I bet due to what will leave, you DM&IR fans will dread my favorite railway forever!
Now, if it does get granted we'll see which ones leave and if the DM&IR power gets booted from the roster. I really hope 665 isn't chosen for the Missabe or I might have to find a new favorite EJ&E engine as I would probably never see 665 again...
I'll get going with those SD38-2s. The sound of SD38-2s is unmatched by anything. There is nothing like three EJ&E SD38-2s pulling up a hill with a coal train! Unfortunatly I am really getting very, very worried we are going to lose anything that says EJ&E on it really soon. It's going to be a long year watching the J engines leave one by one. Hopefully 673 and 671 remain at Homewood so not everything is lost.
The EJ&E exchanged SD38s to the DM&IR for the SDMs and the SD18s. The J does not own any ex-DM&IR SD38-2s and neither does the B&LE, both got SDMs from the Missabe in exchange. Five of the 7 ex-B&LE SD38-2s on the J were actually bought from the Union RR for a few SDMs and SD18s. These are 671-675. The B&LE did own a ex-J SD38-2, 658, but the J bought 658 back from the B&LE along with 670. The EJ&E, DM&IR, B&LE, URR and the Birmingham Southern often exchanged engines, but now that 3 of the 5 are gone, the remaining Transtar roads rarely work together.
Sorry, Robby, but the whine of an SD40-2 is always gonna be my favorite. SD38-2s can make noise sure, but turbocharged units will always sound more "high tech" and retain the powerful sound. Plus I hear GP38-2s in Altoona all the time, so the sound of any EMD 38-series unit got boring to me really fast.
Jordan, SD45X eh? You mean something like....this?
CNW disappointed me not owning any. Look how cool they would've been! I even modified the detail to look like CNW standards....Save for the nose gong (Just doesn't look good on those long units)
And Alec....Jesus Maria is that a STEALTH SCHEME SD40-2? Those are still out there?! Envy, dude...Envy. I havent seen anything special here since...well...this:
Humm, EJE SD38s to the Missabe. Might have to get another trip up there then...
Max, that CSX SD40-2 is actually painted in the CSX-y scheme. It could be the CSX-ys scheme, as the discription says some units got the yellow walk way skirting, but I don't think it's likely. CSX had 14-15 DIFFERENT paint schemes, not including predecessor roads such as the Chessie, WM, B&O/C&O, Family Lines, L&N, CRR (Black and Grey/Yellow Scheme), CR, and Seaboard System (I'm sure I'm missing a few).
I caught some good stuff today, the IAIS was first. Unfortunatly it had a less than thrilling leader, a GEVO. Then, the big catch of the day. I heard EJ&E 664 call in with the N-21, which is normally maybe 25-30 cars long. However, today's train had more than a HUNDRED cars!!! It had 480 axles according to the defect detector, which is longer than a State Line coal train! It was a incredible sight to say the least. Then I got JSW2 coming east with the 665 leading! Then I caught 665 going to the roundhouse at the yard. But then, there were 3 new signs at the entrances to the yard that said "CN Joliet Yard"!
However, despite that very, very, very sickening sight, it was a good day!
