  • Nice Pitures Noah. It's pretty neat we saw many of the same trains.

    Nice photo Tyler!

    Actually, it's a GP9 with a GP9 cab, half a GP9 nose, and a CN fuel tank Wink [;)]

Who wants to see some craptacular pictures from slides I just got back?

  • Excellent photos everyone! I've been getting my fair share of photos recently also, especially with the Mark Twain Zephyr in the area and lots of EJ&E action. Here are some recent photos.

EJ&E SD38 654 highballs through Turner proudly showing off the J-Ball logo on the front. 654 is one of 4 left in this scheme.

Two Relco switch engines sit at Minooka.

EJ&E 312 and slug T-2 switch Joliet Yard.

A pair of NS SD70M-2s lead a westbound manifest through LaVergne in Berwyn.

Dusk shot of the Mark Twain Zephyr.

Two days later, the train still is waiting for the EJ&E.

The shop switcher sits outside with the zephyr.

Last but not least, another EJ&E pictured heading through Turner.

snip so i need to go to TX and see them there. not to mention UP's whole SD60 fleet. snip

Are you talking about the Standard SD60s? or are SD60Ms included too? I think the SD60s are sweet locos. I've seen a SOO SD60M leading a SOO SD60 in Winona. Sadly I basical missed it, so there was no pictures. But I did get some video.

Anyway caught these 2 SD60Ms at Rochelle a while back on a ballast train.

My last trip to Rochelle was probably the best. Out of all the UP trains I saw, at least 75% had full SD40-2s or had more than half of the consist was SD40-2s. The best consist was a complete Rainbow with a UP SD40-2 leading, a Ex CNW SD40-2, a Ex Conrail SD50, and a NS Dash 9.

just SD60s. SD60Ms are part of the EMD 60 series, but they arent SD60s....only SD60s are SD60s. if one considers an SD60M or an SD60F to be an SD60, then they may as well consider GP60s to be SD60s too. i mean they have the same innards too.

that being said, i DESPISE SD60Ms. i can tolerate the ones with 2 windows. but i hate hate HATE the ones with 3. they look like sick mutated locomotives that escaped from some lab.

I think your logic is a little skewed. SD60Ms and Sd60s are the same thing. The statistics I have for the SD60 runs (SD60, SD60F, SD60M, SD60I) are as fallows. I want you to notice as you read this that besides the cab or carboy EVERYTHIN ELSE IS THE SAME. I just didn't bother repeating it four times!

Wight is some thing that is locomotive specific.

What I'm getting at is the only difference is carboy types, if you want to disagree with how  the company who builds the locomotives classifies them that fine with me.

right and GP60s have the same insides too. only the trucks and length differ. the cab and carbody are as signifficant as the trucks.

all i'm saying is SD60Ms are of the SD60 family, but they are NOT SD60s. only SD60s are SD60s. if i wanted to see an SD60M or an SD60F, i would say so. i'm sick of being mislead into thinking i'm gonna see an awesome sleek tough-looking SD60 only to find the person was referring to an ugly mutated SD60M or an obese SD60F. they are NOT SD60s.

    when i say SD60, i MEAN SD60. not SD60Ms, SD60Mu's, or SD60Fs

The first statement is so incredibly wrong I don't know where to start! The second statement contradicts itself. That's like saying I'm part of the Hicks family but I'm not a Hicks. That similie isn't even a stretch.

  • I think I am right in the middle concerning this issue about the SD60s/SD60Ms. The SD60 and the SD60M are techinically the same class of engine and have the same status, but there are some major differences between the two. I remember on the Santa Fe in the old days when they got the GP60s and GP60Ms, even the crews said how different the two engines were. The crews loved running the GP60s, but hated running the GP60Ms because they thought the cabs were built too heavy for the frame. It wasn't just because the GP60Ms were wide cabs that made them different, but the weights of the two are different also. The GP60Ms were basically the only wide cabs built on 4 axles, so that might have a lot to do with them. I don't know if the SD60Ms were as different as the GP60Ms, but they must have been somewhat a success considering they used the same cab (the two window version) for the SD70Ms, SD70MACs, SD90MACs, etc. I think it is great that there are many different versions of a certain engine model. Not all of them look particularly nice, but that is what makes railfanning interesting. Look at the SD40 for example, there is the SD40, SD40X, SD40A, SD40-2 etc. Variety is a good thing! Railfanning wouldn't be the same if everything was the same, except if everything was orange and green with EJ&E on it! Big Smile [:D] J/K

  • not only that, but if all of them are SD60s, how am i supposed to be specific and be able to single  THE SD60 out? call it an "SD60S" or something? it's impossible to single the unit out by that logic

    Your friendly neighborhood CNW fan.

  • To sum up: An SD60M is different from an SD60, and a GP60M is different from a GP60, but an SD60 is more different from a GP60 than an SD60M.

  • right i get that, but you didnt answer my other question of how i can single SD60s out when i want to only refer to them and not their cousins

    Your friendly neighborhood CNW fan.

  • You can just say normal SD60....that's not what we take offense to. It's saying that an SD60M isn't an SD60 simply because of its cab!

Wordings, wordings...the English language is inferior...

  • i think "SD60" would be easier to say and the others should not be referred to as SD60s. they have their own designations. is it REALLY that hard to add an M or an F to the name?

it doesnt matter how similar they are. and yes the GP60 is the exact same inside as an SD60. they have the same engines. all that really differs is the trucks. and the cab is as major of a component as the trucks are. SD60MACs have different cabs, trucks, AND traction current. the SD60MAC differs from the SD60 more than the GP60 differs from the SD60. and yet people will probably STILL call it an SD60. THAT is flawed logic

    Your friendly neighborhood CNW fan.

  • So you're telling me switching out a cab would add a full 100,000 pounds to the weight of the locomotive and add 50,000 pounds of tractive effort? Cabs are only that important to people obsessed with how a locomotive looks, and not what it is. Don't judge a book by its cab, Max.

  • ok fine. there's more differences than just that. but, again, it sure doesnt help me be clear. instead of saying "standard SD60" cuz that takes longer to type than need be, perhaps referring to the whole group of them as "SD60 series units" would be ideal. according to wiki, the SD60 came before the other units (though i have been told the SD60F was first. i have yet to see this anywhere online) so it should be the one to use the name. not any of the others

    Your friendly neighborhood CNW fan.

  • The SD60F was not first...whoever told you that is wrong. Incidentally, there was an SD60S (Or was it an SD50S?) that was an export model.

I just refer to the whole group as SD60s, same as I refer to any type of ESxxxx as a GEVO. Or GEMo....
