Anyone alike the BN??

  • Right on Kade. If you come across anymore of those Athearn RTR tenders, let me know as I cannot find them despite my efforts. I want to integrate them into my layout.

What kind of locos do you run?

  • I read something lately that BNSF was still using fuel tenders between SD40-2s in helper service.  The main reason is to keep the SDs as heavy as possible, so they push better.  4000 gallons of fuel has a bit of weight to it.

Well lets see its quite a big fleet. I run everything from F7's and SD24's to SD70MAC's and Dash 9's. Since my era is from 1980 to 1990 my fleet varies alot! Ted i also just took a couple of pictures with my fuel tender in between my C30-7 and my SD40 so when i get them developed i'll post them here.

  • Yeah I like the BN.  It had a great corporate image and the "Cascade Green"  was a great colour scheme, it looked neat even when not clean.

I am also a fan of the BN's predecessors the " Q " (Chicago Burlington & Quincy) and the Great Northern.

  • fellow railfans, i would like to hereby retract all hate i ever had towards the BN. new evidence has come up proving BN not at fault for the loss of the traffic in my area and therefore i do not hate them.

as a means to apologize to the big green, i have since become a fan of them.

it is for this reason i post here again. for now i DO like the BN. especially those tiger GP50s. that was a neat scheme applied to them

Take it from a geezer -- no matter how much you dislike a railroad or a city or a rail line or a locomotive -- be it BN or GP30s --- take pictures of EVERYTHING.   When you are a geezer you never regret taking too many pictures, only too few.

     I was out in Wyoming last week,.....I think the name of the town was Greybull. I noticed what looked like a GP30 sitting in the yard still in the BN green scheme! It looked like it was still unpatched yet from my viewing angle. Sorry to say though,.......Didn't get a photo!!!! { UGH }

  • there should also be a few SD70MACs still running around with no patches. possibly SD40-2s too. but what i want to know is how many remain without those horrid noselights

  • The GP30 is now a GP39M, and it was not unpatched for there are no longer any unpatched Geeps on the BNSF *BNs atleast*. No Atmo, all SD40-2s have been patched, the last one a few months back. SD60M 9208 is still unpatched though. The SD70MACs wont be unpatched for long, a good 20 or so have been patched recently, many with the swoosh applied as a patch.

  • BNSF plans to have all remaining unpatched BN engines patched by the end of this year, so get them while you can! Many SD70MACs, probably even more than before, have already been patched, and it is getting harder and harder to catch unpatched BNs every day. There will always be one unpatched BN left, U30C 5383 which is now wearing spotless BN paint

  • that would be because it's at IRM......

and i'm not a fan of U-boats at all. or any GE that uses that cab design. i think i'll just go fan the patched ones because they still look fine to me. it's not like BNSF uses a huge orange rectangle with black numbers on the cabs. but the noselights stuff....are they dropping the lights on the MACs? and are they still doing it on the SD60Ms and SD40-2s?

  • As far as I know, they haven't dropped the headlights down on the SD70MACs. The only ones with low headlights that I know were from later orders.

  • no, the ATSF heads have been dropping the lights on BN power too. look at the SD60Ms. they went from awesome to hideous in 1 single shop visit. ugh

  • I have a Thread on the LOCOMOTIVES section and the consensus is:

The High Mounted Headlights cause problems for the crews.

Railroad management would rather have practical visibility for the crew than a superficially mounted headlight.

Get used to practical locomotive rebuilding.

  • and that cant be true because UP and NS still order units with cablights
