The U-boats that received the pre-merger, white stripe scheme, were U23Bs.  They showed up frequently in Edgemont, SD.  Wish I had my camera when I was there and saw them at the old roundhouse in Edgemont.Sign - Oops [#oops]

We sometimes get the unpatched SD70MAC BN units through here nut not often but last year i saw a BNSF coal train with just unpatched BN SD70MAC's i thought it was 1994 for a moment that was a real treat, but i would really like to see some unpatched cascade green units oh well we can all dream!Big Smile [:D]

When I was a Rochelle like a month or so ago, I saw 2 BN SD40-2s un-patched in the lead.(I can't get the photo in the computer. But believe me, I really saw it)A really nice sight! They also had the 2 diffrent paint scheams, the white nose, and the stripe. Plus(If any one cares because it's ATSF) I saw 2 yellow bonnets in the lead on another train. I also thought of this, the BN name is before the SF, does that mane BN is a bigger part in the merger?

Man thats awsome i would love to see some unpatched SD40-2's. I would really love to see an unpatched SD60M despite them being my favorite BN loco ive never even seen one before just in pictures oh well maybe ill see one im about to get my drivers lisence so ill be going to train watch as much as i can!

At Rochelle again I saw a SD60M, but it was a UP. They don't got the style of windows I like. I like it when there's the small window in the middle, Like the SOO and BN ones.

Ive seen a UP three window SD60M before it was like six years ago. I think UP phased those units out for the 2 window version but im not sure? The 3 window version for the BN didnt look right to me, i guess because the nose looked more boxey compared to the 2 window.

BN Fan, here. Grew up in Aurora, IL. I remeber the tower, the E's covering downtown with smoking in the morning, the SD45's on the Ottowa Job smoking up downtown again in the afternoon, and SW12's, 1000's, or 1500's on the local troddling downtown to the Beacon News across the old main bridge at North Ave., or down the Nephi branch (Aurora branch, I called it) to actually work S-A and B-G plants when they were still open.

You could almost set your watch to the trains. If you saw 142 it was WAAYYY past your bedtime, the morning rush, The Aurora Job, 1 and 2, the Sprint chasing the morning Zypher. Then 153 came through, The Ottowa job left town about 2:00, then 160,161, 162 all racing on territory before evening rush hour with Amtrack (usually late) messing it all up. after the rush, there was the Armour -Dial Job and the Cat Job, the evening Sprint, 11 and 12 and a few stack trains and other straglers through out the night.

Unfortunatly, I spent most of my early railfan years photoing everything except Aurora and BN's endless parade of SD40-2's. thought they'd be around alot longer then they were.Sigh [sigh]Banged Head [banghead]

We need to make this the official Burlington Northern Page. Also I just got 3 new engines for graduation a BN SD40-2 BLI with sound, a BN P2K SD45, and an Athearn UP SD40-2T. These engines are awsome!

LOL. Thats funny, im going to try to get some pics of all my motive power on here but im in Tupelo right now so when i get home i'll get my pics up. Also its wierd that you cant find a WC SD45, id really try to get a bachmann 45 they may not be the best engines in the world but my spectrum 45 is 5 years old and runs great and im sure the new updated ones are even better!

Well I tryed to get 2 P2K WC 45s on Ebay. But some one out bidded me. I heard from wctransfer that Athearn Might make a RTR WC 45. So I'm saving my money for that.

I'm going propably to start modelling a BN branchline of the time just after the merge that formed BN.

http://www.trains.com/trccs/forums/1129703/ShowPost.aspx

Can anyone suggest books about this period of BN and especially any book describing a branch line or a small town freight operations?

I'm relying a lot on your opinion as I'll order any books from Greece.

Thank you!

I dont know about any books but if its a branch line your motive power should be small aka. GP7's, GP9's, and since its just after the merger you should try to get P2k's GP20 with the BN patch. I dont know if this will help. Also where will the branchline be located, what region?

Any branchline and any region as far as it's from BN about 1970-73.
And there should be one that was used by more railroads it would be even better.

Hi, Everyone!  I have been a die-hard BN fan since I got into model railroading in 1975. I miss the BN more than I can say! Today's railroading is of no interest to me. I found this page today because I'm tired of the BNSF, and I don't feel it was a merger. There seems tobe no sign of the BN, but the SF is evident! I don't dislike the Santa Fe, but I'm sick of it! I no longer have a VHS and I can't seem to find any BN DVD's without the SF in them! Even Mcmillan makes SF calanders still, but not BN! I was feeling like the great BN was being forgotten, so I went in search of others who love and miss the BN like I do, and I found this page! Thank God!

I still model BN from 1970 to 1995 in HO--I'm up to 53 locos (SW1's to SD70MAC's) and 8 Chicago area locos (EJ&E, IHB, BRofC) I do not belong to a club, as I live and grew up in Mass,. and western RR's are not welcome, plus I don't need the crap. I HAD a 12x35 layout before I got divorced. All my stuff is now at my friends house, who is a die-hard Conrail modeler (hence the transfer locos) and some Friday nights we get more grid-locked than UP did in Texas after the SP take-over! (another shame)

I just want to talk with other BN fans--I knew there had to be some out there!  If anyone would ever like to talk more in-depth about BN or model railroading, my email is richsd40@aol.com    Thanks so much foir letting me spout-off and in my model railroad, the BN will NEVER die!

Sign - Ditto [#ditto] Maybe a Patched Bight Sky Blue GP7 and a Regular GN scheme would look nice.

Wow, I'm amazed that I missed this thread.  Yeah, I guess I am a BN fan since I do have a few engines in which I use to model Montana, and over by name the picture shows a SD70mac that I have.

My brother was always the BN guy because his favorite color is green.  I was always the Santa Fe fan.  Then when the merger came upon us it worked out because we both had a good supply of both BN and SF engines.  Not my bro isn't into modeling anymore and I've have taken over everything.

Going to college at MSU in Montana help my fanhood of BN because I saw a lot of green up there.

I'm a fan of the SD60m three window.  It's just something about them that I can't explain.

 fwdguy wrote:

P.S. What was your first Burlington Northern Locomotive?

An Athearn HO GP50 with orange tiger stripes.  I love that little engine.

I have a SD70mac, SD60m two window, SD60m three window, SD 40-2, GP50, F-45 (will become a Utah Railway kept in BN colors), SD45 (that will be painted MRL), and a SD45 that already became a MRL engine.

Yep, grew up not far from the mainline in Libby MT. I could hear the whistle for miles, would hop on my bike a peddle as fast as I could to meet them. No stops , so they would blow thru around 60 mph. Seems like 1 train thru every 2 hours or so. I'm also a GN fan, my grandmother was upset by the merger, she loved Rocky. ;)

Of course within 100 miles I also had the NP and Milwaukee Road, which I am also fond of.

After 30 years working on the SantaFe I think that when consolidated with Burlington Northern they should have named as such- Santa Fe Burlington Northern.

Just a thought.{We are all entitled to our two cents worth. As the saying goes}.

I understand. My father was a big Q fan and he had trouble accepting the merger, as I'm sure a lot of GN, NP, and SP&S fans did as well.

It was tragic.

Don't I wish.  It's just an old Blue Box Athearn Dummy unit that I've had for a very long time.  It was the first engine that did a big detail job on.  Personally, I'd rather just buy the RTR and add the little things.

Here are some old photos of when I was working on it.

Hello BN fans.

The BN models I see in the forum are quite impressive. Thumbs Up [tup] Keep up the outstanding work!

My layout is pre-BN.  It's a fictional division of the CB&Q, and the NP and the GN have running rights on the layout.  So BN guys, don't forget your roots.

Have fun!

Even though I'm an Espee fan I'm also into the Burlington Northern. 41 locomotives and a dozen cabeese along with two unit trains. H O is the scale.

www.Trainpix.com is a great photo site for BN as is www.Railsnorthwest.com  Miss the BN Green and Black.
