I was born and raised about 30 miles north of the GN mainline in central MT and so came to regard it as my home road. I left there in '63' and so never saw the BN in Cascade Green except on visits. However I was happy when the BNSF took on the old GN colors in a modern sort of way. So GN,'BN,'BNSF, is still my fav road. BILL

Hi from Florida. I model the BN between 1975 and 1985. I don't have a layout anymore.

Truth be told, I've only seen one piece of BN equippment that I can recall. A GP38 I saw in Rochelle a few years ago that was coupled to a Santa Fe GP38. That and an Ebay search for "Proto 2000" (which netted me my first SD9 for 35 bucks) cemented me as a BN modeler. If it hadn't been for those 2 things I'd probably be an SP or SF modeler modeling the 1990s.

PS, I had a GF whose's uncle was a BN engineer, but that ended in a rather Ironic way...(I bought a P2K GP30 and she got mad that I didn't spend that money on her)

 I run BN, Burlington and my favorite Great Northern. I operate both the UP fallen flags and BNSF fallen flags. My only exception is the T1 Reading, just had to grab at the train show. You are not alone its just a matter of what part of BN's history we are running.

Hello from Michigan. I am also a huge BN fan for almost 30 yrs. I'm modeling the Powder River Basin in Wyoming where coal is king. I run everything from F7's to the SD-50's. I'm modeling the mid to late 80's.

Although this thread is over 2 years old i cant help but bring it back to life after knowing that the BN still lives in some way! Having many oppertunities to photo BN SD40-2 6908 it just warms my heart knowing theres a little chunk of the Burlington Northern left!

Yes please post pictures. Even though I'm a big Wisconsin Central fan, I do have some BN in my blood. I hope to add a patched BN SD45 on my layout (WC had ALOT of BN SD45s in 87-93. Even one made it all the way to 95 which it the time period in WC I model.).

So should I post some pictures of the epuipment and layout I have?(It's coming along slowly, trying to build a MRR is tough while taking college, investing, and repairing your car[well, the car's almost done,justbolt in the driveshaft, then send it to the exhaust shop])

Yep!  My MIL is one! Her father worked for the BN and she wants me to model the BN too!

But I just don't see how it will fit on my Southern and Norfolk Southern layout.

I did get this hockey stick car from her for Christmas though....ain't she sweet!

So, I was thinking of running this piece as a business or private car onto the end of my regular passenger service.

I used to be a BN fan, my father was a big fan of the Q and as a kid he used to take me a couple blocks to the Clarendon Hills station by our house and we would spend hours watching the BN commuter & freight trains going in/out of Chicago every day. Metra runs the passenger trains now and BNSF colors make me gag

BNSF comes to my work with 2 engines a few times a week to move/load tank car's and 9 out of 10 times they are "mean green" BN white face engines (I would give anything to see an engine with tiger stripes still in service!) I have only seen the Blue/Yellow SF engines in here a few times.. IDK seeing those engines at work still does somthing to me but its just not the same with the BN logo's painted over crudely with "BNSF" because every time I read that acronym Im reminded of the company colors and promptly gag, Never liking Santa Fe in any way shape or form EVER might have somthing to do with that also

You found another BN fan. I've followed the BN since their birth in 1970. I'm modeling in HO the Powder River Basin in Mt. & Wy. 1985 is the era and coal is the subject of my railroad. I also haul forest products, fuel products & heavy equipment. My loco roster consists of F7A&B's, F9A's, SW-1500's, MP15DC's, GP-38-2's, GP40-2's, SD45's & SD40-2's. Rolling stock - boxcars, flatcars, tank cars & coalgons. I started building about a year ago and I'm almost half done. (Well, in m.r.r.'ing, you're never quite done!!!) I'm in the process now of adding a 4'x10' yard. The layout is 20'x30' with 3 levels and now a yard. I use L-girder benchwork with cookie cutter sub roadbed. So far, I have included 2 large mountains, 2 tunnels, 3 bridges and lots more scenery to come. It's a very rewarding hobby for me and each day I can't wait to start working on it. I'm retired (6 yrs. now) and have all the time I need to work on it. I never get tired of it. Once the m.r.r. bug has bitten you (man, I've been stung alot) there's no looking back, only ahead on the tracks. You never seen to get enough of it.

I'm one.

I decided to go with the Bn, since I like there paintscheme the best, so I did research, and found out that they had most of what I was wanting in a layout, great scenery and the like.

I have a 4'x8' layout which is a free-lanced BN layout. Almost all my equipment is BN (save for an ATSF flatcar, and a CSX hopper, and a Southern hopper)

So far I have 4 locomotives on DCC, all proto 2000s. 2 SD9s, and 2 GP9s. As of Now I'm looking for some GP30s and SD45s in BN. For those, I'm just looking on ebay, since I probably should finish getting new benchwork going, and scenery done.

In '80, the St. Louis - San Francisco was acquired and in Dec. of '96 the BN merged with the AT&SF (Santa Fe) to form the present BNSF. The BN has quite an impressive background and history.

That sounds like a layout that I would think is really cool! You must be rolling a lot of coal tonnage on your tracks! BN was primarilly responsible for the Powder River Basin, which to me is just another reason they were great! What are you running for coal cars? What are you running for locos? I love it!   Keep 'em rolling is right!!!

Funny, 'cause I always thought the H1 and H2 schemes were more GN oriented than anything else.

And here I have been under the impression that BNSF painted their units by colliding them with a Sherwin-Williams paint truck. I call it motif-of-the-day!: Heritage III is likely to be whatever colors that paint truck was carrying on that particular day. They are, indeed, colorful!!!

They might as well have, since (to me) BNSF's "Heritage II" scheme is way more Sante Fe than anything. BN has disappeared! Which is why I am here--I really miss all that cascade green!   By thw way, the pictures of the models in this forum are great!!

This is just my opinion--it doesn't mean anyone else would see it that way. Plus, I am very cascade green predudiced!                     I agree--H1 was VERY GN, and I didn't mind that too much, but it didn't last long. H2, I feel, was more SF than GN with those wide yellow stripes and short-hood herald, and that's when I feel the BN was lost forever and the SF seemed to be the more dominant railroad. Don't get me wrong--I like the SF, and both railroads were very successful in their own ways. But that was supposed to be a merger and both great railroads should be represented. I prefered the H1 scheme, but truly I wish both railroads were still operating as they were prior '95.         And Merry Christmas to all BN fans out there!  I hope we all get at least one new green locomotive under our trees!

Don't I wish.  It's just an old Blue Box Athearn Dummy unit that I've had for a very long time.  It was the first engine that did a big detail job on.  Personally, I'd rather just buy the RTR and add the little things.
