This morning some one found an article that stated all the manufacturers are going from trains to toasters and they also are intagrating the DCC systems into them so we dont have to control our toast with a dial.  There is some debate on what is better for toast tho DC or DCC and what scale works better 1 slice or 2 slices.  What has breakfast and hobbies come to?  Love the trains and now the toast.

So nobody can tell me if my bread needs an upgrade also?  Why should I spend all the money and time on a fancy super-gizmotic toaster when my rock solid reliable old one gets the job done?  Maybe I don't want or need to toast French bread and 26 waffles all at the same time, dude, I can't even eat that many in one sitting!   My wife is already panicking at the thought of all the bread we've collected over the years suddenly being unusable.  So does plain white bread retro fit into a DCC toaster or not?

All this modern crap is wasted money, just get a plain reliable toaster and make some dried out bread for crying out loud!  Back in the 70's we used old skool stainless steel casings and wire heating elements on our toasters and we ate just fine thank you very much.  If you sit and over analyze the situation you'll go hungry for sure.  Start with a reliable two slot with a mechanical spring return and see if that is really what you want to get into.  Later on when you've figured out what and how many slices of toast you can conceivably use, then you can look into upgrading to a digital model.

BLI had a toaster advertised a year ago, said it would be out about June of '06.  I kept putting off getting another toaster for months, then finally said the heck with it when BLI kept putting the production of the toaster back, bought a P2K toaster instead, only problem it costs more and can only toast one side of the bread unless you buy a second P2K as a helper toaster.  But it LOOKS nice--the toaster, not the toast!

I gave up, decided to go full bore and ordered a toaster from Precision Scale in Montana.  Sure, it costs about three times as the P2K toaster, and it doesn't have the DCC toaster plug that the other toasters advertised, but it makes GREAT toast--both sides evenly, and it even has a little side-doo-hickey that melts the butter for you.

Hey, you gets what you pays for!!

I'm confused.  Once the toaster is upgraded with modern digitals, becomes frame electric isolated and given a shiny new polymer color coating, can it still make toast?  Do you then have to upgrade the bread to say, rye or pumpernickel?  Can it still toast old fashioned white bread or will I have to convince the wife that all the bread we just bought is no longer "modern" and must be replaced?  Anybody see what white bread is going for on eBay- you might as well throw it away because you'll never recover the postage.

PS. "live coal" is the hot stuff, "dead coal" is the cold stuff.  Very technical, it's a G scale thingy.

Yea I'm thinking of an upgrade similar to bb4884's. After isolating the crumb trays from the bread slots, I am going to strip the paint with alcohol and apply CSX's midnight scheme and put KD #5's on mine. The decoder is a digitrax, basic model, can't have my toaster doing to much at one time.

but is the heating element isolated from the frame?

I'd make sure teh thing works before repainting - would hate to ruin a nice paint job to take the thing apart because of one faulty wire somewhere....

$300?  Is this guy nuts?  It's not even DCC-ready!

Awww, geez. Not another eBay toaster thread! Angry [:(!]

When I was young, we had to kitbash our toasters. There was none of this RTT junk, which takes all of the skill out of making breakfast.

After isolating the decoder from the heating element, I think the next upgrade will be a new paint scheme. Possibly SF's Warbonnet or BN's Executive.

Me thinks the dumbkoft is the seller paying the fees on that starting price. Oh to be a Ebay like empire raking in thousands from greedy sellers.

I have replaced about 6 toasters in the last 8 years or so. My recent one is completed it's 8th month of service and seems able to hold up for now. It had better, I paid about 50 for it rather than a 20 for a throwaway.

Hhhhmmmm.... live coal......as opposed to........dead coal ??!!!???

I have an older toaster....1970-ish. It can be wound up. Just like my crank radio. Needs no electric, batteries, coal, DC or DCC. Unfortunately the spring has sprung.

No one has the time for that anymore. We want our toasters RTR. Preferably below MSRP, from an internet dealer.

Sometime in the first week of June, someone needs to remind me to post a picture of said toaster. It's a classic. I think I'll put it on eBay and see if I can find at least one id.... , suc..., complete foo.... , you know what I mean, who's willing to pay at least $5,000 for the thing. After all, it's a classic of industrial design. Kinda like that 1966 Athearn SD45 that appeared on eBay some time ago. Laugh [(-D]

That's why I'm sticking with French Toast, no need for a toaster at all... just a skillet!  Banged Head [banghead]

But you might need to go with some signalling to keep the syrup and powdered sugar from crossing over the slices of toast... accidents will happen!  Sad [:(]

Get some good homemade jelly for all this toast talk. And who would have the nerve to buy a toaster off of eBay?? Are u guys crazy? eBays toaster prices are outragous, and you have got to support your LTS with all your toasting needs, not eBay. Jeez, and I thought you guys were smart... :P

And be sure that the toaster doesn't exceed the current capacity and capability of the decoder, or your decoder will be toasted. Butter anyone?
