My favorite would have to be the SD70MAC. My model will soon be my SD75M in Southerm's Tuxedo.

My favorite steam loco is the NKP 2-8-4 Berkshire.
My favorite prototype early diesel loco would be the ALCO RS-3.
My favorite model loco that I own is the NS #9823 GE D9-40CW (see image below)

Take a Ride on the Reading with the: Reading Company Technical & Historical Society http://www.readingrailroad.org/
My favorite (s) are: Great Northern R-2 2-8-8-2, M-2 2-6-8-0, N-3 2-8-8-0 and the O-8-the largest, most powerful Mikado ever built.
As for diesels, the SD45, and GN's various passenger equipped Fs--F3s and F7s.
EMD E's and F's, but spec. the E8--Frisco road of which I rode(well the passenger train pulled by it, anyway) in the 1960's.

I think after I boil everything down and make some painful choices, that my two favorite locomotives are--after everything is considered--two big, brutish, beautiful steamers.
1: DM&IRR M-3/4 2-8-8-4
2: Southern Pacific class AC-6 4-8-8-2
They did exactly what they were supposed to do, no more, no less, and they did it spectacularly.

EMD - GP35
EMD - SW-1500
GE - B23-7 & B23-7R
GE -MP15AC
ALCO - C630
REPUBLIC - RL1
These are my most favorite. I like anything diesel really.
Empire under construction !
The early bird catches the worm.
But, the second mouse gets the cheese!
My absolute favorite is my IORE, a swedish iron ore train from Rocco. It's brutal and I have never seen a grade it can't take and a load to heavy.
Magnus
Steam is the T-1 Duplex
Diesel is the P42
I am only 2 months into the hobby, so I only have 4 engines so far. My current favourite is my 4-6-4 Class K-5-a Hudson
EMD E and F series A units
Steam: NYC J3a Hudson
Diesel: F-M CPA-24-5 and EMD E6
Hudsons were a beautiful locomotive and when they put the shrouding on them, they looked even better. So futuristic. The E6 was the last with a "slant" nose. Embodied what a passenger diesel should be and then EMD screwed it up. And what can you say about a locomotive that looked like someone hot-rodded it. That was the CPA-24-5 with its BB-A1A truck arrangement. Maybe F-M should have painted them black and put flames on the front and they would have sold better!
Just my opinion. Enjoy.
C-630, RS-3, AS-16 and VO-1000 for diesels
For electrics they are all GE the E2B, E40 and E44
My 2 favorites are:
1) proto 2000 Pennsy 2-8-8-2
2) BLI Pennsy M1A 4-8-2
Simple choice for me...
AC6000 (in CSX 'diversity in Motion' paint). Big, loud, and gotta love the radiator hanging out over the rear platform. So what if they don't run well, sell well.....

Its gotta be my railroad namesake.... Any of the SW series of switchers....
Since locomotives come in several flavors, I'll name the various headings - and then surprise you
Steam - JNR C58 class 2-6-2, a fine example of modern dual-service power, Japanese style.
Diesel - hydraulic, not electric - JNR DD13 B-B, Japan's equivalent of the GP7/9.
Electric - 1500vdc catenary - JNR ED16, the ugly old box cab that could (move tonnage on a mountain branch.)
AND NOW, THE WINNAH!!!
Kiso Forest Railway's last steam, Baldwin 0-4-2T, industrial cyclone stack and all!

Maybe it's because I have an un-reproduceable photo of my wife and kids with #1 when they were young and it was retired. Agematsu, Japan, 1964. Maybe it's the model in my display case, patiently waiting for a stretch of track it can call home.
(The loco in the photos has been widened from 2'6" gauge to 3' gauge, and the bell, headlight and classification lights are American-owner add-ons, not original. Originally a wood burner, it has been modified to burn oil.)
Chuck (modeling Central Japan in September, 1964 - forest railway included)
One of my most favorites has to be the UP Big Boy. I've really got to get an AHM one for my layout soon.
Other favorites include the Warbonnet F units, U50B, 2-6-6-6 Allegheny, modern wide cab SDs, and the T-1 4-4-4-4. There are still many more I really like, but these are some of my absolute favorites.
