I got completely out of the hobby for many years (from my late teens until my early thirties) but it came back with a vengeance. My father also got pretty much out of the hobby during the same time period, from his late forties until his early sixties. Although we don't actively model together anymore, we both got back into the hobby about the same time.
I don't have a favorite manufacturer, but small industrial locomotives, streetcars and interurbans interest me most.
Not directly: my father had an interest in model railroads, and I often participated in his model railroading by building structures, detailing locomotives, creating scenery, or visiting the hobby shop or a model train show or club layout. It was a father/son activity. In some ways, it still is.
