Older N Scale Locomotives
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, January 20, 2007 3:45 PM

I received from a friend a few boxes of N scale things.  Among the stash were some engines.  I want to say these things have been sitting for at least 15 yrs.  They run, but it took alot of gentle nudging and directional changes to get them going around the loop.  My question is, could the motors in these be in any decent shape at all.  Even with the Tech II power up at 100%, most of these engines barely run at a decent speed for train operations.  I have not even attempted to load cars behind them.

Please email me or post any thoughts or suggestions on this.

Hi. Hope this helps some.

I just returned to the hobby after many years, and started by collecting my old N scale from my parents house.  I had 2 diesel Arnold Rapido Serie 2 (made in W. Germany), one 0-6-0 Serie 2 Arnold Rapido Steam made in W. Germany. and 2 unknown 0-4-0s one steam and one diesel.

When I first "fired them up", I ran into problems like you. they had not been run in, oh, 25 years. I had to carefully take them apart, clean and oil them. Be carefull, if they are like mine, they have a few thin floating copper electrical pickups that need to be cleaned (I used rubbing alcohol and q-tips) then lubed with a lube desinged to transmit electric current. (at your local hobby shop) Be careful cuz if they are or get bent the wrong way just a fraction off they wont make contact and run right, like you maybe experiencing due to dirt and oil and dust. I was fortunate that the thin copper was not worn well or worn through, needing replacement. Someone else on the forum may be able to help if you need to replace them. Be sure to get lube for plastic gears if you have them, other oils can eat the plastic.

My 0-6-0 runs well, one diesel almost well, and one still has issues. The two 0-0s, hoever seem to not recover from years of storage. Gave me a reason to buy some new ones!!!Wink [;)]

Hope this helps.

Just my thoughts, ideas, opinions and experiences. Others may vary.

 HO and N Scale.

After long and careful thought, they have convinced me. I have come to the conclusion that they are right. The aliens did it.
