Just got this one in the email a few minutes ago...... host off the presses....

Peyton Manning's House In The Sky

Peyton Manning, after living a full life, died. When he got to heaven,
God was showing him around.

They came to a modest little house with a faded Colts flag in the
window.

"This house is yours for eternity, Peyton," said God. "This is very
special; not everyone gets a house up here."

Peyton felt special, indeed, and walked up to his house. On his way up
the porch, he noticed another house just around the corner.  It was a
3-story mansion with a black and gold sidewalk, a 50 foot tall flagpole
with an enormous Saints logo flag, and in every window, a New Orleans
Saints towel.

Peyton looked at God and said "God, I'm not trying to be ungrateful, but
I have a question.  I was an all-pro QB, I hold many NFL records, and I
even went to the Hall of Fame."

God said "So, what's your point, Peyton?"

"Well, why does Drew Brees get a better house than I do?"

God chuckled, and said "Peyton, that's not Drew's house.  It's Mine."

Colby: I went through the same kind of thing when I was in school. A couple of the worst guys started getting too rough and had to be taught a lesson. Since they were on the football team and practiced several times a week, I decided on my avenue of vengeance. I soaked their jock straps with massage oil. That stuff contains a lot of alcohol. After a few minutes working out on the feild in the hot sun, they were totally incapacitated. After that, I didn't have much of a problem with them.

Now, as for trains being worthless, what do you think would happen if all rail traffic within US borders stopped for a month? For one thing, your big chain stores like Wal-Mart, Target, Sam's, not to mention the big hardware supply store and home improvement centers would have to close. Why? Their stuff comes in by truck, doesn't it? The trucks are loaded at the supply points and warehouses. How are those warehouses supplied? You guessed it, the railroads. Without the railroads, commerce, industry and trade in the US would quickly come to a stop.

Colby, for me it was a little different.
Started in 1st grade,
stopped in 4th.
Now there is two train people in my class, And I hope it stays that way.
I rarely ever get called a geek or train nerd.
Maybe that's because we have someone who is at the bottom.
Or the fact that I play football.
Either one.

Colby, yes, history is not on Manning's side, but you never know eh! Just like the Saints! History was made on Saturday and hopefully history will be made again this Sunday.

Now, as far as the teasing and stuff at school, it is so typical that some kids will pick on others because they have a target on their backs so to speak. I was into trains too when I was a teenager back in the 70's and went through similar prodding in junior high and high school. But you know, I know what I liked and I liked what I did. No one was going to change my mind either.

Just brush it off. Those people / kids who pick on others at school are just jealous that you / we have actually found something that brings us joy and makes us smile. You have a lot of character and pride plus the support of all us here in the forum.

When kids would pick on me I would just laugh a little and smile and say something like "what have you done to make the world a better place today?", then watch their reaction or walk away from the real negative people.

If someone is really a bully I would absolutly report any incident to the counselers or staff office personnel.

Ryan: I don't know... Manning has been shaky durring the playoffs. Patriots will win, not by alot but they will win.

now them time for

Railfans VS Nonrailfans.

If any of you would like to add to this please go ahead.

Railfans 9 time out of 10 will get picked on by either fellow employees, or classmates. All because they like trains.

This usually happens durring the 5th grade and steadly gets worse through middle school and high school.

Railfans sometimes tries to hide the fact that they like trains. Hopping to avoid attention, while others show it off like a Medal of Honor. Railfans are not the most popular students but they are not the most hated.

The teasing can range from a simple disgrasful look in thier direction to name calling with names like: geek, trainboy, choochoo boy.

Name calling of trains usually goes along with the name calling like: trains are gay, stupid, worthless, and even %$@#!!

Scarcasim is common. Comments like, Why do you like trains? You going to be an engineer? How them trains doing?

All of these can be stressfull, but there are options to lat it out.

1. reture the teasing, name calling and insults

2. talk to a teacher, guidance councilor, or a parent

3. ask them to stop

4. This should be you last option.. sock 'em in the mouth and beat the liven day lights out of 'em.

On rare occasions there is a need for railfan knowedge. Like for an art porject. Durring that time the 'spotlight' is on the railfan. Nonrailfans ask questions like: m

How do you draw a rail?

What does an enginee look like?

Does this look like a train?

Durring that time frame the teasing stops because the nonrailfans think that if by teasing the railfans they will not help them considering that nonrailfnas don't know anything about what railfans specalize in. Confiusing an't?

As Middle school starts railfans face a whole new set of people and challenges. Like students that are neither mean or niced to the railfans about their hobby. It's like a silent respect because you know more about something they know little of, then there are the students that are nice about your choice of hobby, respecting it but think that it's just a strange hobby and leave it that way. A strange hobby, but there are those students who are every railfans worst nightmare... The students that seem like they are on a crusade against railfans and the hobby, going are tell rumors about something they know nothing of. Which in somecases is enough to send some railfans straight to option #4. Which would work and build you a reputation that if anyone makes fun of trains and you don't like. watch out!!.

Now this one that I personally like because I do have a friend who is a budding railfan, and live literally across the street from active tracks of the Genesee & Wyoming.

Now there are budding railfans that accept you for who you are and seem interested in the hobby. In rare cases like those it's ok to ask them to come by your house and check out all od the options that come with this great hobby. Like

Model railroading

Railfanning

Volinteering at either a local day care with your model trains, or at a railroad meseum

Thanks for reading![

Good morning from the fresh powder snow covered Piedmont! It took me an extra 25 minutes driving into work today, only saw one accident on my stretch.

Before today the last time I drove through snow was in March of 2005 while on family vacation in Colorado, driving through the San Juan Mountains from Cortez to Telluride. Now that was a snow, the dang plow almost hit us coming around a bend, quite exciting. That was the best vacation ever; we rode the Grand Canyon Railroad too on that trip!

So Chloe, I'll have a tall cup a Joe please!

Finally got my February Model Railroader magazine in the mail yesterday, the original went missing in the mail over the holidays so I emailed Kalmbach customer support and they sent me another copy. It arrived in a nice envelope and it was wrapped in plastic, nicely snuggled for snail mail delivery.

Oh, and I got my Model Railroad Planning 2007 issue in too!

Worked the train room again last night laying about another 16' of track, and if you listen closely you can hear the sound of the spike drivers pounding the rails.....

Flip, I finally got to watch the train video, I saw the first hour with the CP footage. Spectacular rail fan sights and the scenery is just amazing. I did not know there was so much sulfur up in them there hills........err........mountains! Next up is the Tracks Ahead episode, looking forward to that too!

I see that Mike is on the list too, so after I watch the whole tape I will be forwarding it to you Inch! Sad news about that rail fan in Alabama, thoughts and prayers to his family!

Yep! Both the AFC and NFC Championship games should be good ones! The Colts have a good shot at it especially with home field and all. And Dick, I done took that 3rd grade test a few times and have to say it is a challenge, but I passed. The small New England states still get me mixed up a bit.

Nice pics there Philip! Looks like you got snow too! And yesterday's breakfast is looking real good right about now!

RT, thoughts and prayers for you and your dad, and sorry to hear about the trip to the ER.

Jeff, hope your back is getting better now!

Der John, nice pic of the beach and snow! Oh.....poor penguin! And it sounds like you are making some steady progress on the layout. When can we see the latest pics?

Good Morning All,

Much warmer out and bright but overcast for now. I'll just have the coffee today please. Interesting slide show at the museum last night color slides of passenger trains dating from the late 1930's through the late 1950's. Most of the diesel power was E's with a few PA's thrown in, but lots of shots of loooong trains with streamlined Hudsons (or Baltics) on the front. There was some way cool stuff out there at the start of the transition. Also shots of UP's M1000, the Green Diamond and a few others. The most impressive part of how it was has to be the 18-20 car matching consists. What a sight that must have been in real time.

Jim - if you flop your plan upside down to put the turntable nearest the front edge, the stub tracks that would end up at the rear would be ideal for an industry flat or two. It would also make it easier for the "five finger crane" to put locos on the tracks near said turntable. Just a thought.

Der - nice idea with the plastic foam bits and much easier than raiding the fish tank or trying to find white sand in the Maritimes (forgot that part of course). The plastic will also tend to "float" more like real foam in the waves.

I can sympathize with the bad backs - occupational hazard for me. One of the best home therapies I've found is to lie flat on my back with my lower legs on a foot stool. Also doing leg lifts from that position when not in excruciating pain helps (one leg at a time - no foot stool).

Lots to do so got to go.  CU,J.R.

Evening gents...

It seems Jeff's bad back is doing the rounds, I've pulled a muscle in my lower back yesterday, god it gave me grief, it isn't so bad now, but it's still painful.  I've taken painkillers and anti-inflamatory tablets which have helped.

The weekend is drawing near, and I can't wait to start my new project, mind you I won't be doing too much lifting.

At this moment i'm currently watching Nacho Libre, which is pretty funny...not the funniest, but it's better than nothing...

 Good night all...

Evenin', folks! Chloe, a cup of hot cocoa and that chocolate cake in the back of the cake/pie case, please. Dinner [dinner] Yum!

Sign - Welcome [#welcome] to the Trackside Diner, fixerup! I see some have already given you a suggestion or two on how to decide for your layout. But remember, it's your model railroad, so you can do what you darn well please... Yeah!! [yeah]

Not much news on the layout - had the workday from H-E-hockey puck-hockey puck today. About everything that could go wrong (with getting one commitment done smoothly), did. Thought I was done, and went home early after no lunch, but then got a call and had to go back in. I'll need to reconstruct my mileage for all the trips. Tongue [:P]

And now, the forum software won't open the smilies window (gives me a 'Bad Reguest (Invalid Hostname)' error message in the window)... Sad [:(]

Anyway, treated myself to dinner out at Panera's (good an excuse as any!).

I have been playing with track designs some this week - trying a variation of the Bullis Yard (which I saw somewhere online, I think). Here's the design, with the main coming in from the left (I'm figuring on this being at one end of either the main or a branch line):

I figure there could be an enginehouse (up to 2 tracks), coaling station and diesel fueling and sanding facility in the upper left, industry lower left, and maybe an industry in the upper corner of the yard or the adjacent track. Just playing with an idea or two - nothing built yet.

Oh yeah, at work we're having our annual audit from the Dept. of Mental Health, and tomorrow morning the crisis department (me and my co-worker David) will meet with some of the auditing team. One question I may be asking will be "What were you thinking when you cut the budget for MH?" We'll see what questions they have for me and David...

Fergie, hope things start going better for you, your Dad and the whole family. Angel [angel]Angel [angel] for you all. Hang in there, buddy. Thumbs Up [tup]

I don't have a whole lot more to say tonight, so I'll be heading out for now. Prayers for those of you recuperating (like Jeff and others), and for our snowed-in bunch in the NorthWest.

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Last call for coffee on the east coast...Atlantic timers have gone to bed. Down to 11.2F with a wind chill below 0, so we have a TWO DOG night tonight here in the Northeast.

JEFF: Happy to hear your back didn't suffer anything real bad....it takes a long time to heal at our age, were're not "Spring Chickens" any more.

DER JOHN: That test was for U.S. kids, but if Canadians take the test and pass they get extra food in the Diner for a week.

MIKE: That is sad news .........some people have no fear of God in their actions.

Time to hit the sack, see you guys in the morning...

I found this posted over on the train board

Missing Railfan.....Sad news

Just found this in AJC.com

A body found earlier this month in a wooded area of east Alabama has been identified as a Gwinnett County man missing since before Christmas.
St. Clair County, Ala., Sheriff Terry Surles said Wednesday the body discovered Jan. 3 near Riverside, Ala., is that of 61-year-old Barry Alan Helling of Snellville.
Helling, who was found by two fishermen in woods off U.S. 78 east of Birmingham and about 140 miles from his home, died from an apparent gunshot wound to the back of the head.
Helling was last seen leaving his house on Dec. 9, and was reported missing by his partner later that day

Good evening folks:  Hard time getting onto the internet tonight.  Connection keeps going down, and then connecting at an astounding 9.6kbps!!!!

I’ve now settled on the way to model foam and spray for my ocean scenes.  The Flex Paste and sawdust mix was an encouraging start, it looked quite good (but needs white paint because the wood stains the paste).  Then I remembered that I had an old “party light” low grade fibre optic flashlight thing.  I cut the fibres up and put them in the Magic Bullet® until they were quite fine. (Sprayed everything, bowls, utensils blades etc with Static Guard first, really needs that)

The resultant clear plastic chibbles when mixed with the Flex Paste were even better than the sawdust, and were still a bit yellowish.  However, that experiment took all the fibres, none left for the layout.  What to do?  I had several clear plastic trays that cookies come in (inside the outer packaging).  I cut one up, Magic Bulleted it, and (wish I could say “Presto” but it takes a while to reduce to the right grain size) voila! a clear plastic “sawdust” that looks really good when mixed with the paste and applied on the piece of “test ocean”.  So now I’m ready to add spray and surf to the scenes on the layout.  Pity I have to go install a toilet at my daughter’s tomorrow!

fixerup: to the Trackside Diner.  Too darned cold for the sidewalk part to be open right now!  Thanks for the mrr info, care to say where you are from?  Food is great, and you can order virtually anything your desire, menu selections provided graphically mainly by PC, who also seems to have away of posting first on the page quite often.  That gives him (or anyone else except first timers) the joy of paying for everyone on that page!

Dick:

Cloe and Vinny will throw you out of the Diner
…Since they aren’t “my” states, I think that is a bit discriminatory!Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Paul:  I had the same trouble as you with page 34, but thought it was just part of this evening’s internet reluctance.  I closed my browser, came back in, and it was there just fine.

I’d better be off to bed, earlier start tomorrow.  Good night all, and God Bless.  Prayers for all in need of healing, comfort and peace.Angel [angel]

Well, I had to delete the scene information from my backdrop threads. It seems the place I got them has changed their copyright information, effective today. Now it's a "limited" copyright freedom, but I'm hanging on to the backdrop I made.

Evening Gang: I don't know what is going on but I can't load page 34. I keep getting the page cannot be found notice. So I'm doing this on page 33. There's more then one way to skin a cat.

Well I didn't go to work today. Would you believe it snowed? The weather guessers said there would be snow south of us but none here. They blew it again as we have 1.5 inches on the ground and it's staying. Mary Ann and I spent most of the day taking care of the animals. Our son John came over and helpped me put out a couple bales of hay. Later we watched a video of Westside Lumber Co. We just love those shays. After that we went over to the track and were going to fire up the live steamer, but the water was frozen so no way to get water into the boiler. We haven't run in the snow since I got the steam locomotive. Maybe Saturday. Yes it may snow again Friday night and Saturday morning. So where's Noah? Opps, I mean Snoah.

Tomorrow Mary Ann is supposed to go to the doctor but that will probably be cancelled. Since I've allready got the day arranged to be off, I'll be off.

Of course nothing has been done on the MRR. I have been thinking about the addition though. I've got to get the basement cleaned out abit before I can do much of anything.

Well I'm going to go and check out somethings on the net.

How about that. I'm on the top of page 35. So have at it gang.

Good Night All

Good evening everyone.....a balmy 11.2F here at 7:30, so I guess we might go below "0" tonight. The woodburner is getting a workout these past two days, and it looks like it will continue for at least two more weeks, maybe more if the jet stream pattern holds.

Did some RR planning today, a perfect day for that.

Here is a 3rd grade test that one of my grandkids told me about to "test" me.....hmmmmm I wonder I will do.....want to try your luck against 3rd graders guys?

http://www.pibmug.com/files/map_test.swf

This is a timed test, if you know your states, you should pass, if not, Cloe and Vicky will throw you out of the Diner.

JEFF: How's your back tonight?

I got the car back from the shop today. That wasn't bad, a one day turnaround time, considering the amount of work it needed.

  1. Right side CV axle
  2. Both outer tie rod ends
  3. Strut mount plates
  4. Inner and outer control arm bushings
  5. Left side lower ball joint
  6. Rear shocks

Cost for labor: $495. That's a lot cheaper than another good car.

Hi Jeff, Earlier in the week you mentioned an automotive device called the "Tornado".

I have a 1992 Ford pickup, 302 V8, recently rebuilt ( bored .030 over) so it's actually about 317 or 318 cubes now. It has about 7,000 miles on it since rebuild.

I get about 15 miles per gallon.

Do you think the "Tornado' would help the gas mileage?

I looked at the website.

It looks easy enough to install.

I drive a 52 mile round trip to work and back home everyday, so some better mileage and less fuel used would help.

Gas just fell to just below $2 a gallon here yesterday, is around $1.98 to $1.99 a gallon now in northeast Indiana.

Good luck with "Phase II"

Ed: Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner, I've been pretty busy. Yes, the tornado should help you. It's a snap to put in. It just pops in and has absolutely no moving parts. Just make sure that the arrow points in the direction of the airflow toward the engine.

This looks like a sidewalk cafe type place? Hows the food and the prices? I model HO with alittle bit of everything on it. Steam is 1 in my book followed closely by first gen. diesels F's SW's NW's All Alco's. I am building a fairly large layout, and right now I have yet to settle on 1 roadname I like them all, some more then others.

I look forward to chating with many of you in the days to come.

Hey guys. Just stoppin' in. I got to go to Jazz Band soon. My band director said I could solo today :)
Well, I finished Glacier Gravel, and it dwarfs the rest of my buildings!
The next project is:
Get a digitrax zephyr and a DCC decoder.
The project after that is:
Get a UT4 From Tony's, two UP5s, a 6' cable, and a 4' cable.
The next project is:
Putting up the backdrop.

Brr!!..it was down to 0F here this morning, much more like the temps we were expecting before this crazy winter started.  The wind is just plain nasty.  Definitely hot chocolate weather, thanks TiptonBill!  Here’s the view from our bathroom window when I got up.  That’s sea fog made of ice.  The off shore wind thankfully is taking it away from us.

JR:  White sand…hm…I’ll have to think about that if the sawdust doesn’t work out.  Preliminary test last night dabbing Flex Paste in about “Dry Brush” amounts onto the back of a wave form look pretty promising, as does the same technique to represent the spent surf and run back on a beach.

Hey PC I don't think we have any cranes in Maine.. on rails anyway..
…how does that song go? “The cranes in Maine stay mostly off the train”

I'm sure there's some somewhere.  I would think Portland would have one.

Oh, and time for lunch!

Zoe, Boneless Buffalo Wings please!

And a Moxie!
