Good morning folks: A JR regular please Zoë, and an oatmeal-raisin muffin, heated, with butter. Thanks. A brilliant sunny morning it is, to be sure! Chilly though, a good thing there’s little or no wind.
I’m on page 41, and haven’t read ahead before replying to what people have posted, so please forgive any obvious anachronisms!

Rosie-the-dog has taken to barking pretty much through the day and night (or so it seems to us). There is a fox around, and we think that that is the main reason. The neighbours haven’t said anything yet…..

Sue: The first layer almost totally disappeared. Is that normal? …what was the base you poured onto? From the pic it looks like a sealed-with-glue natural rocks on painted plaster. The only thing I can think of is that the plaster the rocks were set in wasn’t painted or otherwise sealed sufficiently. But I’ve not used WS water.

This look like a nice place to step inside and have a hot cup of Jo. We are getting a lake affect snow in southwest MI today; if it wouldn’t make me lat to class I would stop and enjoy it. I think I will get some eggs sunside.
The manure farm is a good idea, this dairy farmer near were I lived in the lat 80’s tied to do that but the cost was to much to get started and went bell up before he really got it working but the technology nowadays should make the process a lot better. Any improvement to the energy system is much need.
Good morning, how is everybody on this Thursday morning?
Yesterday I removed the old open frame motor from my antique Bachmann and shoe-horned a PPW can motor into it's place. There's a 300% difference.

Now it doesn't sound like a pepper mill anymore.
Here's a scene that's been preserved from my old layout and will be a part of the new one.
First, in darkness.
Then in the light.
Now, on with the business at hand.

Another coffee Zoe,
JR, there's not much smell with the process, most any big hog operation has little smell IF it 's run right. With the process their useing after the manure going throught the digester, the remains are dried [sun] and it smells like good top grade compost for sell or their own use back in the fields [which cuts back on store bought ferilizer]. They even get manure from other operations, that have trouble getting rd of it.
In the end they market hogs, electricity, and ethanol. No real market for the extra methan yet. They also used soy-deisel in their farm equipemt and trucks. So, their fossil fuel use is very little compared to most operations.

here is what it looks like in the NorthEast
Good Morning All,
Regular and a donut wrapped for travel please. Cold and some light snow on the ground this morning typical January weather at last.
Inch - sounds like the pig farm hit on a good thing though any action that keeps the "end product" on the property longer has it's drawbacks. Nothing has an aroma quite like a large pile of pig droppings. The trick is to use the nonrenewable resources in such a way as to cut the future use of them in favor of for instance your friends pigs. You need to raise the pigs anyway so if you use the byproducts to make energy for the raising of the pigs and replace fossil fuel doing it, the break even part should be deductible at least from taxes. Incentives work much better than just raising prices through the roof.
DerJohn - The work is coming along very nicely. The rocks have just the right look and the wind driven waves are way cool. Looks like a typical Maritimes coastal scene though the neighbours in Lockeport would think you a bit uppity having such a nice shiney shed and wharf. You can trace the history of most of the fishing and lobster boats by looking at the different paint strata where it's worn away on the hull. Don't forget the piles of old traps, tangled seaweed fouled rope and old markers in the corner. And at least two nondescript friendly mutts and an armada of "sea pidgeons".
Time to pick up tools. CUL,J.R.
Mornin, coffee and a couple doughnuts Zoe,
A cold one here today, high round 22-23, some sun latter in the day, with a NNW wind at 10-15, gust to 20. Low for tonight lower teens. Looks like I'll have to sleep close to Mother tonight.
JR, there's a big hog operation, I heard about that was using the manure to make methan. Then using methan to make the ethanol, building heating and generate electricy, and any extra back to the power companys. They weren't making much profit yet, but it could be done with improvements in equipment.
DICK, that flu bug is makeing rounds here to, bout everybodys had it. A couple of the grand kids twice. So far I've lucked out [knocking on wood]. I'll keep an eye out for those tank cars, but I haven't been out doing much rail fanning lately, lousy weather.
JIM CG, #1 son had a round with Walmart over Christmas, they called him and said the script was ready. Then when he got there, it wasn't. Told to just do some shopping while he waited. When he left, the store manager was walking a couple pounds lighter after Pat chewed on his back side.

Hey JP, I answered your email (and sent you another one to answer). Check your email.
Paul, I'm still looking on the apartments. At this point, I'm hoping to have things straightened enough to appease the current landlord for now, and then locate a (much!) better place to move into (and leave him behind!). This landlord's not good about fixing stuff (like the missing seal at the bottom of the fridge door, but that's not the only thing wrong with it). How many days till retirement, short-timer?
Not happy with our local Walgreen's, either - they said on the phone my prescription (for one of my glaucoma drops) would be ready in about an hour (so I waited an extra half-hour, just in case). But when I went to see about picking it up (and waited in line a while more), they said they were out of it, so couldn't fill it tonight at all. This is not the first time they've been out of my drops, either. So I'll go to another pharmacy where I can get it filled. Okay, end of gripe session.
I have been checking some of those apartment locations, though some of them are way across town from work (which would mean I couldn't leave for work at less than 10 minutes like I can now, but ya know...) A couple are in an adjacent town, where the rents are comparatively cheaper (can get a 2 bedroom there for what some 1 bedroom ones in Cape can run). So a little more looking to do yet. I'm going to try to be choosey and find something I can live in (and with) for a few years or so.
DerJohn, good to see what you've been up to on your layout. Looks good! On the waiting for global warming, I hope (for Jeff and Ryan and Flip's sake!) it doesn't get all the way up to Missouri on the sealine.
Well, better get heading for bed. See you all in the morning!
Blessings,
Jim in Cape Girardeau
Here are the fruits of my labours. First, the part of the layout as it was. These photos are quite old, as I was still adding foam mountains at the time! I needed to make new space off the layout edge, and re-locate the circuits you can see there as I did so.
The “Wharf” was destined for the end of the “Timesaver” on the track furthest to the right. It turned out to be way too high out of the sea, and I lowered the whole thing, making an access road in the process. The building on the wharf, an Omega 3 fish oil plant, has will have a loading dock on the rear of its upper storey that is served by that track.
So where’s the ocean? Here’s an overview. The scene is on two levels. The sea level at the wharf ( on left) is higher than that at the cove, on the right. That’s deliberate as there is supposed to be miles and miles between the two scenes. I’ve made the wind direction at the wharf, shown by the waves, come in from the viewer’s right, while the wind is blowing from the direction of view in the cove.
<>The scenes are separated by a wall of rock which belongs to the cove, and isn’t at the wharf at all. (The wind direction at the wharf helps with that, as no waves are crashing against the rocks that aren’t there!) <>Well, it’s nearly midnight, I’d better say goodnight, and hope to catch up some more (got from page 39 to 41 while doing this) later.
<>CapeJim, you could always wait for global warming to give you ocean frontage right at home, then your new layout will be fully justified!
Goodnight all, and God Bless. Prayers for all in need of healing, comfort and peace.
Evening Gang: Just stopped in to say good night. I'm taking another sick day tomorrow. My foreman just laughed when I told him. I called the guy who has the buildings that Mary Ann and I had been looking at. He's coming out to look at the site and talk about what she wants. As soon as she gets the building I can get the basement cleaned out and work on the layout again.
JimCG: Anything new on the appartment?
Well I'm going to head for bed. I'll see you all tomorrow.
Good Night All
Good Evening All,
Cold and getting colder here just as Grayfox predicted. Getting stuff ready for the big E trainshow this weekend with my friend and I setting out at 6am saturday too arrive in time to help set up and maybe take a quick tour before the doors open. Hope to see the New Haven I-5 on display from FDT and maybe find some bargains. Mostly I need to start on detail parts and some more Peco switches though I will stop by Branford Hobbies if Mark is there and Tony's which will be there. I also need to start getting 50's to 60's autos as I have given up on the local Wally World ever getting any in 1:87. Last years best buy was a CD with signage and scenes plus a bazillion curtain prints. You never know and that's why train shows can be way cool.
Sue - the scenicing is looking very spiffy. Just tell them all it's the first bath of spring hence no tan lines ( with me by the end of summer it's more like burn marks).
Hoople - good luck on ya - hope you win.
Trent - so finally you get to build a layout? We'll need pics.
Well it's time to go watch the back of my eyelids - CUL,J.R.

Quite a sandwich, huh?
Good Evening, Chloe - I'm hungry! Let me have one of those hoagies like PC's (but hold the sardines, please. Yep, and a Pibb, too. I'll be working on it over in the corner booth. Looks like (for now) Ryan's not there sleeping. I'll try not to wake Duke...
Hectic day at work - glad it is over until tomorrow. My co-worker who usually helps me cover lunchtime is out until next Monday (had nasal surgery last Monday), and my supervisor left late in the morning for a conference in St. Louis. Luckily, another supervisor was able to watch things while I went through the drive-through for lunch. [whew!]
Got a few boxes moved to the storage shed tonight before dinner, and pitched three more in the dumpster. Nice thing is, while I'm clearing out stuff, any boxes of stuff I decide I don't need can be brought home and toss it in the dumpster, too. (Tee hee...)
JP, if you hadn't already seen it, those cars were at local Wal-Marts. (So you'd better swing by one before somebody else gets the ones you want! )
Hoople - good luck on your auction! Do you have a sniping program for bidding? Some people don't like them, but for me they save me from getting into a bidding war and going higher than I want on an auction (or losing because I was outbid and didn't learn it quickly enough). Lets me set a maximum I want to bid, but not tip my hand ahead to those with the deep pockets.
Liked your water pics, Sue - I'd agree with the others that those cowboys should have a better tan. Don't think they usually wear SPF 30... The logging cars look good - who makes those? Got logs for them yet? I've liked what I see in the catalog of the Rivarossi log cars (which if I'm remembering correctly, come with logs, right?).
Trent - I'll be looking forward to your layout plans. How big a space do you have to work with?
They're talking about possible snow this Saturday here. That'll be later than the record (first snow of 1 inch or more) latest date for first snow, which was Jan. 22nd. Which doesn't mean we might not get clobbered with more later in the winter... I'd like a little - growing up in St. Louis area, I was used to snow before Christmas (sometimes by Thanksgiving weekend), so further south here, I miss it.
Think I'll read in my MRP 2007 - got mine yesterday, but haven't sat down and read it for long, so I think I'll do that now. See everyone later!
Just checking in. Found this on page 2.
BUMP!

Jeffery- That motor looks very simular to a Varney. Very good motor and they were placed in a number of older Bachmanns. Wished they'd stayed w/them as opposed to those bad motors from the 80's. Thanks for the heads up on the Testors program!! U DA MAN!!!!
We are OFF WATER RESTRICTIONS!!!!!!! It is still raining today. Ya'll take care and keep posting those pics. I'll reduce my NEW track plan and post it maybe this weekend. Also a train show to work this weekend as well.
Later,
Trent
Morning all! Been a busy morning around here!
Hi Chloe! I'll just have the Dagwood and a Moxie. Thanks!
back Derrick:
well I've got the mine building covered with the corragated foil. It came out pretty well for a first try. I can see that doing the metal in scale sheets 3ft wide and length to suit would be time consuming but not too difficult. I'll try that on the mine head frame.
One more day down 9 to go. I was told today that they are going to have a party Wednesday for me. I guess it will be in the pavilions since the carpenter shop is a real mess. I just hope that it is warm and dry that day.
I'm going to read abit in the MRP 2007. There are a couple of good articles and some new or forgotten information in there.
I'll see you all later.
Good morning everyone, a bright, clear day here today, 29F at the moment, but there is a vicious cold front headed our way later this afternoon, and we may have record cold here by Friday. I think from the radar shots that our good buddies in Nova Scotia are already in the severe cold, maybe that is why we haven't seen them in the Diner yet.
RYAN: Sounds good, I like to hear first hand opinions. The new TV's are really clear, it truly is amasing.
MIKE: I saw one of the new "model" Tanker cars that will be carrying the Ethanol at my LHS yesterday. I dodn't pick it up because I am not modeling the modern era...yet. That is Phase II in the upper level of the garage. Keep me posted if you see long drags with Ethanol cars moving in your area.
J.R.: I don't know the chemical processes to make a gallon of Ethanol, but we must keep these things in mind:
I don't know how things are health-wise in your parts of the country and the world for that matter, but things are getting tough here in the Northeast, kids and adults getting flu-like sickness daily...high rates in school right now. It has been so very warm this winter, now we are getting brutal cold for this region, so we are under the gun now.
See you guys at lunch,
Hello everyone. I'm back. I talked w/the Administator and they said that I was ok on the forum.

Thanks for the encouragement from all of you. No work on the layout today because I am soon to be off to work. Then there is the rock gym this evening.
I had to go into town for a massage last night. I had to kill some time and stopped by for a visit with the LHS owner. Here is my latest score.
Have a great day.

Anything is possible if you do not know what you are talking about.

Sue, nice scene you got there! Great job with the bathers and the water!

Coffee to go for me this am please. Suns up already though it's still cold out. I have been runnng the Jetta for a bit each morning before I venture back up to Plattsburg with it. Don't feel like getting stuck on the Northway in this weather - it's a bit desolate up there.
Good to see James and Sue making progress - how are the rest of you coming along? Dick seems to be making so many trips to Palmer that I'll bet he barely has time to work on his layout.
The ethanol thing should be interesting as it supposedly takes 1 gallon of fossil fuel to make 1.3 gallons of ethanol. We're not going to save the planet at that rate though we might end up regretting the inaction that has let so much farmland erode into streams and rivers. It will be interesting to see where we end up though I'm not sure about the future for what I do.
In the meantime I have work that needs doing and I'd best get to it. CUL, J.R.
