Good morning ! from Indiana.

Near a cornfield in Indiana...
It is time for me to live on the other side of the clock for a week, 12 hour nights that is.
Jim since you have forgiven me does that mean you are taken away the wish of snow for me? Being from Mass you must realize the insulation value of snow around the foundation and with fuel oil cost approaching $3.00 a gallon I need all the help I can get. What kind of wood stove are you breaking in? Do you know if you have to follow a break in sequence on a pellet stove?
Garry interesting shot but I have to agree I don't think that is Jeff driving that loco if it was him you would only see a bunch of teeth because he would be grinning so much.
I will have to start posting pictures of some of my limited engine roster. I am collecting Lehigh Valley and PRR, I have a FA2 and FB set of Lehigh Valley from two different makers (A unit is proto 2000 and B unit is Atlas I think) I was surprised at the detailing difference between the 2 The proto 2000 has a greater amount of detail than the B unit and the colors are no where near the same. I also have a F9 and a SD? in Pennsy colors. After I build my 15 year old daughter a new bedroom I will take over here old bedroom and begin to build my layout again. Think I would like to do something like the HOG posted by Chuck Geiger yesterday. I have had the 4X8 and really would like to do something different.
Has any one frequented the new hobby shop Mister Beasley opened? I really enjoy his attention to detail and how he finishes the inside of his structures excellent work.
Good night all Kevin

Garry, that photo is a riot! I don't think it is Jeff, as I can still see the engines through the headlights. Looks a bit too old for Scott, although I'm certain the grin would be accurate for him. HJust one thing bothers me about it, someone really needs to weather that loco. It looks like a Tyco. And thanks for the tidbits on the SD24s. I will be looking at a UP version when the time comes.

Breaking in a new/old pair of Bevbel F7 diesels as I type. I know they con't compare to the latest greatest versions that undoubtedly have lighted number boards, tiny grab bars and other fine detailing, but for what they are they seem decent enough runners (to me). I will probably keep this these in my diesel roster...at least for now.
Rob
Hello everyone....
This photo was forwarded to me by email. I see a copyright, so don't sell it to anyone. Is that Jeff in the cab smiling ????
Rob.... I'm mostly familiar with Burlington's SD24's. They bought 16 of them in '59 or maybe '60. At first they were used on "hotshot" freight trains like the Chicago-Denver train as 4-unit sets. Crews called them "Red Devils" because they were the first CB&Q locos in Chinese Red scheme. As CB&Q acquired more second generation models, they MU'd them with just about any other freight diesels for just about any mainline freight service. ...... Initial buyers of SD24's were CB&Q, ATSF, UP, and SOU. Units for each road had differing features, and Atlas has done a good job with making them specific for each of the 4 roads. After years of service, the units were sometimes rebuilt and/or sold. Rebuilt units sometimes had chnges in apperances. Snata Fe created new locos called "SD26's" from their SD24's. Many SD24's ended up on regional railroads. I'm not aware of any assign to switching duty.
Cheers, everyone.

Good evening to all, spent the day breaking in the new wood stove, the procedure is to fire to stove to 200F then let it go cold, then repeat this procedure at 300F and 400F. I still need to do the 400F tomorrow.
ED: What make of computer do you have and what kind of problems are you experiencing? Good job with latest photo shoots, the RR station would be a nice build for your layout.
Curt was resigned, 1 year contract, he is very happy. And, there is reported progress with Lowell by both sides, although he "has" filed for free agency.
JIM: Yes, people can have favorites who live in other parts of the country, I used to root for the Vikings during the Joe Kapp era when there was no football team from NE states. But when you are born and bred New Englander, and living in New England, it is heracy not to support the Red Sox or the Patriots. The only exception would be the people who live on the fringes of NE to the west, some might be closer to Bills, or the Jets & Giants, like far SW corner of CT.
KEVIN: You are excused Kevin, you were not born and bred in NE, therefore you are allowed to root for your home team...LOL BTW, that was really not very nice of Colts to run the crowd noise back through the stadium sound system.
FERGIE: 110,000 lb test lines??? Well, think of this, what is the weight of your ship? Now start tossing that much weight around in huge waves only restrained by the lines. If you do the math, you can see that it is amassing that the other lines didn't snap!!! As for game, it depends upon the spread, if it were even, Buffalo all the way, poor Dolphins really are bad this year.
DER JOHN: You are really doing a great job John, at this rate of progress you will have your layout ready for a MRR photo shoot by January. Better put another log on the fire tonight, you have some real cold air headed your way from Churchill.
Evening Gang: just a quick one tonight. I welded the hinge on Mary Ann's storage container. I couldn't weld the hinge totally since the metal was to thin. I got the end welded on a seam. I guess it will hold ok. There are 4 hinges on each door.
Ed, good pictures as usual.
Rob take care of the finger and I hope that the second interview for you wife goes well.
I'm going to head for bed.
Good Night All
Fish platter with veggies of the day, please & thank you!
***Sue, you are 100% correct...farm chores are NEVER done, that's for sure. Just today the wife pointed out where the neighbor fell a huge tree that not only spanned the creek, but the top 1/4 or more landed on our fence. No biggy, I'll chainsaw my side when I get around to it. There is a steep bank there and the two horses in the back pasture would never try it. (If Twister was in that pasture, I would have delt with it today, but she is fearless). Oh, have not yet started building the wife's layout, but I wager I will do about 90% of it. She will undoubtedly take over when it's time to place stuff like animals, people, autos, etc...
***Ed, thoroughly enjoyed the photos. Thanks for sharing them!
***Garry, what is the primary (and secondary) use for those SD24s? And if lashed with other locos, what would those most likely be? Were/Are the SD24s ever used for yard work or is that serious overkill?
Re-listed my old SW1500 set after finding it didn't come up well under N scale searches. So, I lost almost $2 on it already. Oh well!
Ah, foods ready. That was quick! Rob
Good evening Diners: Another power cut this morning, due this time to a transformer on the island that should have been fixed, but the order got lost in the maelstrom. Didn’t last as long as the estimated time, but long enough for Kris to cook up a very welcome chicken stew on the woodstove. Welcome doubly because by lunch I was ready for it, having power washed the salt from the windows. To eat now? Why, I’ll have a couple of slices of 12 Grain toast with quince jam please, and a JR regular, Thanks Janie.
Thank you for all those kind words about the rock castings. I’m passing them along to Kris who had many helpful suggestions as to colour and “bandwidth”, so to speak. She’s no slouch as an artist, and definitely a keeper! (46 years this August if you add in the years it took me to get around to asking!)
Nothing done on the layout today because of post-Noel chores, and regular Tuesday evening commitments.
Fergie: Isn’t 110-120 knots considerably more than the forecasters were saying our max gusts would be? (135kph if memory serves.)
Flashwave:
By Gotham, I assume you mean Metropolis, right? (Daily Planet was in Metro. Not Gotham That was the batty dude)
BTW, if you want to save space on the page when quoting, try typing in the [ quote] code, and selecting just the bit you want to quote, pasting, and closing with the [ /quote] code.
Sue: Ground foam on the tracks eh? I’m in the same sort of situation having been at the landscaping so long that the track is in need of major cleaning before I can think of anything being able to turn a wheel. Some day, some day……but I want to bury the blue foam before year end if I can.
That’s about it for today. Goodnight all, and God Bless. Prayers for all in need of healing, comfort and peace.
BTW, it looks like we are closing fast on the 8000 post mark. Is there a party planned?

Hello everyone...
DerJohn ....... Rock work is super!
Rob ....... Glad you like SD24's. They are unique locomotives with historic significance. They could be considered the first of the second generation diesels. RR's began using turbocharged diesels with the SD24.
Duke ... the PM arrived. Don't you just love technology?
Sue..... Yes, I still pretend that I "interchange" with NP. Actually, I've not yet built the part of the alyout where my planned interchange will take place. When I get there, I will interchange with both GN and NP.
Jim .... all that food looks good but I'm using will power to stay on a diet. ...Um ...Er...., well, ..... at least I'm trying to do that.
Philip... Keep us informed about "Mrs. Philip". We certainly hope the upcoming procedure works okay.
...and Jerry..... Hope Sallie will do okay, too.
Ed .......thanks for the railfanning pictures!
Best Wishes Everybody!
Good Evening Coffee Clubbers,
Wanted to get in here and post quickly while I still can. I've had computer problems since Saturday, and they continue. Hopefully my local computer guru can get out here within a couple of days. So I'm waybehind in reading here. If anyone made comments, asked questions, etc., during the past few days I'll apologize in advance for not responding.
I did get pictures from last weekend's railfanning trip uploaded to Rail Images. Took forever, but that was due to problems at my end, not with Rail Images. In any case, here are a few of them and some play-by-play.
Last weekend we went to Mexico City to do some railfanning with our usual group of friends. The outing was geared more towards seeing some old stations on abandoned branches than it was towards catching trains. But of course we hoped to see at least a little action. Our first stop was at the old station at Teotihuacan. Just a short drive northeast of Mexico City, this is the station that for years served tourists going to visit the archeological zone at Teotihuacan. Lots of people from north of the border say "The Pyramids", but it's really much more than that. It's not the best reference, but you can check it out at:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teotihuac%C3%A1nIt's been years since any tourists went to Teotihuacan by train, but it still served the locals. But passenger service was eliminated about 10 years ago, and the station now serves only to house some local security guards. These guards, by the way, told us that we could wander anywhere and take pictures of anything except the station. Say what?? Anyways, here's a shot of the area around the station. Whoops, did we catch the station itself in that panorama. I'm sorry. While there we caught our first train of the day, and one of the few that we saw. You'll notice immediately that the sun is behind the train. That would be the case almost all day, despite our best attempts to get the dispatchers to route the trains differently. The interesting thing about this shot is that the locomotive, an AC4400CW, is wearing the distinctive (if somewhat dirty) Ferromex paint scheme, but it's a Ferrosur train. In fact the loco has been patched (below the window) with FSRR. This loco was one of a group that FXE just sold to FSRR.I usually don't pay much to autoracks, but did manage to catch a decent shot of this FSRR autorack, with sufficient grafitti, which was part of the train.
Our next stop was Tulancingo, about an hour farther out. This was on what was the old Hidaglo & Northeastern RR, which was absorbed into NdeM around 1908. It was originally built as narrow gauge, and I don't know when they standard gauged it. Passenger service was eliminated around 10 years ago and the tracks were lifted. Fortunately the building has been preserved (along with a freight shed) and turned in to a small museum. Here's a view of the building. Here's a shot of the entrance. And here's one that Fran shot outside the building. An old man, with his bag and dog, sleeping on a bench. It seemed to her as if he were waiting for a train that would never come.
Hope these show up okay in reduced size. Remember that you can click on them to enlarge them.
We'll see how long I can stay on line this time and maybe catch up a bit on what has been going on.
Hasta luego,
Ed

First, the raw state, and here’s what it looks like now. The cribbing looked too new and clean, so I’ve weathered it with fine powdered ash I’ve been keeping in my scenery tins. I think that stuff will help with most of my rolling stock weathering as well. Sure am glad to get that behind me, and I’ve been covering more of the blue foam as a result.Next up, I’ve a couple of plaster retaining walls to cast. Also, quite soon I shall have to deal with the container dock. I’m thinking that foam core board would work well to represent a concrete dock with the tracks in it. The tracks right now are on AMI roadbed, and I need something flat and smoothish that's thick enough to come up level with the railhead. Also, I figure I can cut it easily to put in the tracks for the container crane when I get around to building that. Anyone worked with that foam board for concrete areas? Any tips? That’s about it for tonight. Goodnight all, and God Bless. Prayers for all in need of healing, comfort and peace.

Hey peeps. I' gots a question. I'm looking for a good Eirpean stand-in. I have the Bachmann Orein express, but I have not the skill to put a decoder in the tender. (which for those who know not, is also where the motor is. teh steam loco is a dummy, which this hobby needs more of) So, in HO, what would be a good stand in. And preferably have sound too.
As a backup, I've seen the Fleishman. Not bad, but not quite there either. Though I love the shrouded series three.

Jim, You are not weird. The cookies and cream ice cream concrete looks great. I will be right over.
Rob, I was able to work outside most of the day. Farm chores are never done. It should start raining again tomorrow and that will get me back into the train room. Is your wife working on the layout with you?
Philip, What is the news with your wifes surgery date? How is she managing?
Garry, How is your end of the NP world? I have so much ground foam on the track that we didn't even exercise the locos this weekend.
Later,
Sue
Anything is possible if you do not know what you are talking about.

[Love ice cream and custard in the winter time, but hey, why be normal?]
***Jim, I'm with you on this one. Ice cream is a perfect wintertime treat. Hey, I'm usually wearing a T-shirt when others have coats on. Never figured out why. Guess my internal thermostat is set on high.
Something very odd has happened today: There is a trickle of water in our creek. There is NO WAY any recent rain could have produced this. The BIG creek is still dry as a bone. We suspect someone upstream somewhere had a dam that broke OR someone upstream hit a waterline?? It's not much of a trickle, but to suddenly have any water at all is highly suspicious. It is pooling in one of our horses drinking spots. I'm NOT complaining, just hope it is fresh water and safe for our horses in the front pasture.
Went ahead and put the old Concor cow/calf duo on bay. Forgot to write in the description "N SCALE" At least it is Listed under N scale, so perhaps folks will still find it in searches??? Hope so!
Can barely bend one of my little fingers...must have done sothing to it working on those tires. Gurrrr!
Good afternoon, Diners - Zoe, I'd like some custard concretes, please.
Thanks! , I know, I'm weird. ('nuff said about that... ) Love ice cream and custard in the winter time, but hey, why be normal?
I'll just work on this and appreciate the golden afternoon sun outside.
Blessings, and a BUMP!,

Afternoon all
to the Newbies
I would like to see the Lions continue to get better but for the most part,I just like to see a good close game and really don't care who wins.
Good to see some of the old regulars back and yes kind of like Old Home Week here.
Jerry Hope Sallie is doing better
Rob Hope the CFO does good on the re-interview and they must have seen something to invite her back.
Garry I will try the PM instead of the Email and if that doesn't work then I guess I will need your Email addrress.
Paul That new tractor sure does sound like a nice one and I can remember my dad filling tires, wasn't a pleasant job. Second part should include Rob also.
John The Rocks are really looking good!!
Fergie That is some pull on those lines to break them and especially made out of Kevlar.
That's about it
Best to all on sick call and those recovering

Taking a break for a bit. Removed the loader (actually, just the scoop) for taking to a welder. Then I stretched every tendon in my body (well, felt like it anyway) getting the lugnuts off the tractor tires with a small "+" tire iron. Then loaded them and the scoop into the back of the pickup. Going to let someone else fill the tires and replace that valve stem that came out. It might be holding at the moment, but I don't trust that it will continue to do so long term. Hope I didn't strip too many of the lugnuts...gulp!
Posted a question about Kato NW2 vs LifeLike SW9/1200? (N scale) and it sounds like the Kato is the clear choice. Anyone here in the Diner have either or both of these? Any thoughts? I have decided to sell my old Concor SW1500 cow/calf combo and put what I get towards an switcher upgrade. There is some sentimental value attached to those old Concors, but looking at the newer ones, once again there is no comparison in the detailing.
Still wrestling with letting go of my old Concor E8 set (both A units), but those molded horns just look so bad. Who makes the BEST E8 units these days?
Well, back to work here. Rob

***John, those rocks are coming along beautifully. And that retaining wall is sure getting a workout. I really enjoy seeing the progress photos.
***Garry, I have been wanting one of those Atlas SD-24's for some time, (in "N"atural scale). Nice to hear they run as nice as they look. Have been considering one for my Christmas present to myself, but there are still a couple others high on my list, too. So many desirables....so little money.
***Philip, the only Christmas shopping I've done is picking up a Woodland Scenics Holstein Cows for the wife. (She already recieved her DeWitt Clinton because she wanted it NOW and I wanted to see it run, too.) We're going to drop in a train store in Kennesaw GA next week when she goes in for her re-interview. She is going in a week early. I hope she has studied up enough because they gave her two weeks to prepare. Anyway, we might look at a loop of HO easy track (or whatever it is called). I will also bring my N scale Kato Mike to see what they would charge to apply all those tiny detail parts.
Well, off to do critter rounds. Have a great day all. Rob
I will have coffee with a cinnamon roll. Pour a cup for my friend, Lisa.
Glad to have you checking in. I hope that a layout in the house will make things easier for you. I am lazy. I would have lost interest if I had to work outside with our damp weather.
der, Great work on the rocks. That retaining wall looks so natural.
Good morning Dick
Two eggs on toast please.
Dick Thank you for the warm wishes, I hope we get two feet of snow soon so I can bank up my house and start working on the train things again. I have a stack of cars to build and 4 craftsmen kits to build but to much work outside and busy enjoying the baby. Seriously I was born in Buffalo area and moved to Maine in 1976, I am actually a Steelers fan but I like Dungy better than I do Coach Bill so I have to root for Indy. I actually planned on going to bed early last night but ended up watching Monday night football instead and Baltmores horrible game.
PC looks like the cold weather you are getting right now should hit Maine by this weekend. Maybe Jeff could send some warmer weather to us.
Fergie souds like you had some tremendous waves and tidal surges. Not as bad as Katrina but pretty severe.
Well time to go, chores to do and gentlemen is coming to look at the cost of installing a pellet stove in the basement.
der those rocks and wall look very realistic.
Jeff great roster shots getting better and better.
Take care stay dry Kevin
Morning all!
So hows the weather in Central Indiana you ask? Well, the much-anticipated cold air has arrived. Gotta bundle up the little ones at the bus stop (if you have um) as wind chill values will be in the mid 20's. Even by this afternoon, even though air temperatures will reach the low 40's, wind chill values will stay in the low to mid 30's as winds will reach 25 miles per hour at times. We could see a few flurries as well, especially north of Indy. And if by some miracle, you haven't had a hard freeze in your area over the last week and a half, you will get it tonight or tomorrow night. Lows will drop into the mid 20's in all locations.
Thats right folks, it's a nippy one out there!
Der, lookin'good!
So, who's done with their Christmas shopping? Who hasn't started? I'm afraid I fall into the latter catagory. How about you?
Good Morning, Zoe - cup of coffee and one of those twisty donuts Bill T. brought.
Now, Dick - if someone lived outside of New England and rooted for the Patriots you'd be okay with that, right? So why is the other way not okay? I'm with Garry or Fergie - if my favorite team is out of the running (or if I don't have a favorite in that sport), I'll root for another one. It's only a game, anyway...right?
Cooler morning here - only supposed to get into the low 50's this morning, and frost advisory again for tonight. Guess fall's on its way out. Next thing you know, we'll be getting that white stuff that they're talking about for Jerry, Mike, PC and Garry's areas. (Hmm, wonder how soon I should start looking for a snow shovel...?)
Time for me to finish up and head for the wk thing.
Blessings and prayers,
Good Morning All,
48 and rainy this morning. voted with the new LCD system this morning. No not liquid crystal display - lowest common denominator. fill out the form then flip it over and fill it out some more. No extranious marks allowed - now go across the room to the one scanner and feed it in. See the bottleneck? Of course the first person who has his card spit back creates a wave of backup at the scanner and has to go back and start over witha new ballot since mistakes are not tolerated. Another triumph of technology over common sense.
Painting more N buildings and repairing carburetors for the museum, no progress on the home front just now. I ended up with a pile of Model Power houses which look easy to bash as needed so we'll see how that goes.
Welcome back Lisa and Cary - seems indeed like old home week lately. Glad to hear everyones recovering but we need to keep Jerry and Sallie in our prayers and hope Sallie doesn't need the knee operation.
I think it's perfectly ok to root for whomever you want so long as you don't get into that rooting against thing. I've been a NY Giants fan all my life but I don't root against other teams even the ones I don't really care for.
Time to get into the back shop. CUL, J.R.

Dick Old Boy, It could be worse! He could be like me, a regular Benny Arnold Turncoat of the week. Last week it was the Skins, week before the Sea Hawks, before that the Browns, Titans, Rams... Whomever. As long as the team I've picked wins and keeps me in the Street Suicide Pool for another week I don't care!!! I still have Pats and the Colts in my reserve arsenal so I'll be root'n for both (hopefully) eventually. BTW I talked to the Chief Officer on the Terry Fox yesterday and they were tied up at the CCG Base in the Hbr. They snapped 2 spectron lines (Kevlar rated at 110,000 lb pull) and almost parted 2 more. They had to call in a Tug to keep them alongside. Winds on there Ananometer were reading 110-120 knots!
I'm thinking Bills over the Dolphins... Any thoughts?
Der John: Scenery is Looking very good!
RT: Talked to Teffy a week ago and he's full bore at work and have ISP problems so I think it's a no go as far as seeing him here.
Later All
